Gay Couples Having Babies | Dr. Samuel Pang the Medical Director of the Reproductive Science Center of New England talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. A pioneer in helping lesbians and gay men become parents, RSC has been serving clients throughout the United States and Europe. Gay couples can become parents by the same assisted reproductive technologies that enable infertile heterosexual couples to have babies and the good news is that it is possible to have your own biological child. Dr. Pang and his husband have two sons through IVF with donor eggs and gestational surrogacy. We talked to Dr. Pang about these procedures and issues facing our LGBT community. When asked how he became involved with reproductive services for gay and lesbian couples Dr. Pang stated, “I joined the practice in 1993 as the Associate Medical Director and in 1997 I was appointed to be the Medical Director of the Third Party Reproduction team which specializes in treating people who need either an egg donor or a gestational surrogate or both, to become parents. Now in 1997, all of the patients who required egg donation or surrogacy were heterosexual but in 1998 we were first approached by a male couple who sought to become parents through egg donation and gestational surrogacy. At that time no other fertility clinic in the area would agree to provide them with assisted reproduction services but we welcomed them immediately. Over the next five years we went on to help this couple have a total of three children through egg donation and gestational surrogacy. And in the past fifteen years, we have gone on to help many other male couples become parents through egg donation and gestational surrogacy. With a few rare exceptions, virtually all male couples who have gone through this process have been successful and some have even returned to have a second or third baby. Now getting back to the reproductive services for lesbians we have always provided donor insemination services for lesbians since our practice opened our doors in 1988. In the mid to late 1990’s I treated a few lesbian couples in which one of them wanted to conceive but was unable to do so because of ovarian failure so her partner would provide eggs for her to conceive with through a process that mimics egg donation. While most lesbians continue to use alternative insemination with donor sperm to have children, recently, some have opted to do what I have come to refer to as reciprocal IVF where one partner provides the eggs which are inseminated with donor sperm, and the other partner gestates the pregnancy. Now this is an interesting concept because these lesbian couples are not doing it because of medical necessity but electively by choice. Because this was a new concept which didn’t have a name, I coined the term “reciprocal IVF” to describe this elective IVF process. Reciprocal IVF allows both women in the relationship to be part of the process of having their child or children together.” RSC is holding an LGBT Open House on June 13th. This is an opportunity to learn more about the assisted reproductive services provided for gay and lesbian couples in addition to fertility preservation consultations and services for transgender persons. Open House includes a facility tour and Q8A time with Dr. Pang. This event is free but registration is required. To RSVP…. VITO The New Documentary | Jeffrey Schwarz, Producer / Director talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about his new must-see HBO documentary VITO. Vito Russo was a founding member of three pivotal gay rights groups starting with the Gay Activists Alliance in the early 1970s. Russo was also a key voice in the creation of both Act Up the AIDS activist group credited with revolutionizing the federal approval process for new drugs and the influential media watchdog the Gay 8 Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The Vito Russo Award is named in his memory at the GLAAD Media Awards each year and is presented to an openly gay or lesbian member of the media community for their outstanding contribution in combating homophobia. Russo also wrote the groundbreaking book The Celluloid Closet in 1981 that was later turned into the documentary of the same name that brought attention to how our LGBT community had been censored and depicted in unacceptable cruel stereotypes since the beginning of film. Vito Russo died way too early of AIDS in 1990 at the age 44. When asked what his commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Schwarz stated, “Well Vito was inspiring to me because his main issue was visibility and being out and showing the world who we are. I think the number one thing that you can do for the gay and lesbian civil rights struggle is to be out because if you’re out they can’t stereotype you and they can’t defame you and that’s always been his issue. Whether it was visibility during the gay liberation movement, encouraging people to come out to their families, to their coworkers and his struggle was also to show gay and lesbian lives on the screen, to make our lives visible in movies, in television and in the media in general… So I think his whole life was about visibility and for me I think that is the number one issue. I think as time goes on history is definitely going to be on our side because as more and more people are out people will know who we are. I mean it’s hard to discriminate against someone who’s standing right next to you and saying this is a gay person, this is a lesbian standing right next to you.” VITO is an important documentary that everyone in the LGBT and the heterosexual community should see. It’s currently playing the film festival circuit and will premiere on HBO in July of 2012. LGBT Filmmakers Part Two | In the conclusion of our exclusive audio montages, Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson, Host of OUTTAKE VOICES™, talks with five filmmakers about their films scheduled at the Boston LGBT Film Festival that runs through May 13th. We also had the opportunity to talk to the filmmakers about crucial issues facing our LGBT community. The New England Premiere of MEN TO KISS directed by Robert Hasfogel, in German with English subtitles, is a great comedy about the chaotic relationship of the unequal couple of Ernst and Tobias. The film shot in Berlin is about the opposite attraction of a respectable banker Ernst and his unconventional partner Tobias. The sudden appearance of Uta, Ernst’s eccentric school friend, fundamentally changes their relationship. Uta does not approve of Tobias and tries to break them up. MEN TO KISS charmingly proves that homosexuality can play another role in gay movies and replaces common clichés with authentic everyday stories. The film will be presented May 10th at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts at 8:30P. The film’s star Frank Christian Marx will be present for a Q 8 A following the film. JOBRIATH AD, directed by Kieran Turner is about the first openly gay rock star that arrived on the glam-rock scene in the 1970’s. This fascinating documentary spotlights his life, music and groundbreaking influence. Jobriath stated at the time, “I am the true fairy of rock”. His brief but fascinating career as an openly gay performer, sometimes called ‘the American Bowie’ is uncovered by this enthralling documentary. Adored by MORRISSEY and THE PET SHOP BOYS this is a celebration of a singer-songwriter whose legacy will now be rediscovered. The Director Kieran Turner will be present for the screening and a Q 8 A following the film at the Brattle Theatre on Friday, May 11th at 9P. GIRLTRASH: All Night Long (A Work in Progress) is directed by Alexander Kondracke but unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the film will not be shown during the Boston LGBT Film Festival. However we had such a delightful chat with Producer Lisa Thrasher we decided to keep her audio interview in our montage. Hopefully the film will be rescheduled in the near future. UNFIT: Ward vs Ward is a documentary by Katie Carmichael and Edwin Scharlau. The film raises the question of who is more fit to raise a child: a convicted killer or a lesbian? In 1995 a judge in Pensacola, Florida declared the father, a convicted killer, was more fit. This is the story of that case and its aftermath. The documentary will be presented at Brattle Theatre on May 13th at 4:30P. Katie Carmichael and Edwin Scharlau will be present for a Q 8 A following the film. The 28th Annual Boston LGBT Film Festival concludes with NAKED AS WE CAME directed by Richard LeMay. Shot entirely in Massachusetts and starring a stunning ensemble cast including Ryan Vigilant of Gossip Girl and Karmine Alers, (Mimi in Rent). NAKED AS WE CAME is a story about letting go of the past and recreating family relationships. Director Richard LeMay and actors will be present for the screening on Sunday, May 13th at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston at 7:30P. Bishop Robinson & Gay Filmmakers | Bishop Gene Robinson and Director Macky Alston talk about their groundbreaking documentary LOVE FREE OR DIE. Then Director Wendy Jo Carlton shares her film JAMIE AND JESSIE ARE NOT TOGETHER and we conclude the first part of this two part audio interview series with Director Brendan Fay about his documentary TAKING A CHANCE ON GOD. All of these filmmakers will be present with their films at the Boston LGBT Film Festival that runs from May 3rd to May13th. We also talked to the filmmakers about crucial issues facing our LGBT community. LOVE FREE OR DIE is the 2012 Sundance Film Festival Winner of U.S. Documentary Special Jury Prize for An Agent of Change. The film follows Bishop Gene Robinson who came under fire in 2003 when he became the first openly gay man to be elected to the Episcopal Church in New Hampshire. Since then he has battled for LGBT people from small town churches in New Hampshire to Washington’s Lincoln Memorial to London’s Lambeth Palace, as he calls for all to stand for equality, inspiring bishops, priests and ordinary folk to come out from the shadows and change history. LOVE FREE OR DIE will be presented at the Brattle Theatre, Cambridge, Massachusetts on Monday, May 7th at 7P. We talked to Bishop Robinson and Director Macky Alston about the film and their commitment to LGBT equality. When asked what is his personal commitment to LGBT civil rights, Bishop Robinson, stated, “For me the impetus for this is both religious and secular. That is to say, I came out in 1986 when I was 39 years old and I was a priest of the church and it was clear to me that religious institutions; Judaism, Islam, Christianity, were really responsible for 95% of the discrimination that we experience. Even non-religious people in the culture use religious reasoning to argue against us and keep us from our full civil rights. I felt that I had a foot in both communities, the religious community and the LGBT community of which I was so proud to be a part. I felt a special calling to try to reconcile these two groups and to get the church to see how it had been oppressing for two thousand years and to see what I could do in my own small way to change that; to both change the church so that it became not just tolerate but embracing it and celebratory of us. To say to the LGBT community, ‘You know the church has not served you well in the past, in fact it has been abusive of you, but there are Christians and Jews and Muslims who will welcome you and help you answer your own spiritual needs and the religious institution you left years ago because you were treated so badly might be the place for you now.” With over forty feature-length films there are also a number of LGBT dramas, comedies and musicals telling our stories. From Director Wendy Jo Carlton, (HANNAH FREE) comes JAMIE AND JESSIE ARE NOT TOGETHER. We talked to Wendy Jo about her romantic musical comedy that tells the story of two queer girls whose codependent, loyal friendship is fraught with erotic tension based on Wendy Jo’s own experiences of loving the wrong women. JAMIE AND JESSIE ARE NOT TOGETHER will be presented Saturday, May 5th at 6P at the Brattle Theatre, Cambridge, MA and she will be available for a Q 8 A following her film. We also talked to Brendan Fay about his documentary TAKING A CHANCE ON GOD that will be shown at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, MA on Sunday May 6th at 2P. Fay tells Jesuit priest John McNeill’s inspiring story of faith, love and perseverance in the face of oppression and rejection. McNeill is the Co-founder of the LGBT Catholic group Dignity New York. On Monday May 7th at the Brattle Theatre following LOVE FREE OR DIE there will be an important Religion Panel Discussion with Bishop Gene Robinson, Director Macky Alston, Director Brendan Fay, TAKING A CHANCE ON GOD, Rev. New Movie “The Perfect Family” | Australian Director Anne Renton talks about her new must-see film THE PERFECT FAMILY starring Kathleen Turner, Emily Deschanel and Jason Ritter that opens May 4th in NYC, LA and on demand with a wide release on May 11th. The film is about suburban supermom Eileen Cleary (Kathleen Turner) who is nominated for the coveted Catholic Woman of the Year Award at her local parish. It appears she’s a shoe-in but one final test remains and that is introducing her family to the church board that includes Monsignor Murphy (Richard Chamberlain) for the seal of approval. This is where the plot thickens when she must face the truth about her nonconformist family, something she has been in denial of for years. With her gay daughter (Emily Deschanel) about to marry her life partner, her unhappily married son (Jason Ritter) having an affair with the local manicurist and her own marriage to a recovered alcoholic pulling at the seams, Eileen decides to take action, ramping up her meddling to hilarious new heights. As she does, she begins to question what truly makes a family perfect. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Renton stated, “Well as a filmmaker I try to think about what it is and what would be a different way to tell a story. When Prop 8 was passed in California I turned to a short film that I had just made called LOVE IS LOVE. I did a minor re-edit and put some cards up in the front of the film and basically dedicated it to everyone that voted ‘Yes’ on Prop 8. The film was a comedy about what it would be like for heterosexuals to live in a predominately gay world. So my hope in doing this was to get it out there. I put it up on Youtube and it did get quite a lot of hits. I hope that some of the people that watched it were people who maybe did vote ‘Yes’ and that it was an opportunity to maybe support them to think a little differently about things.” LOVE IS LOVE also stars Emmy winner Jane Lynch (GLEE) and Anne shares a very interesting story about how Lynch became involved with her short film. THE PERFECT FAMILY premiered to critical acclaim at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival and opened the Provincetown International Film Festival last June where we first met Anne and interviewed the film’s star Kathleen Turner. Listen to Kathleen Turner Interview…. Anne Renton has since formed Certainty Films with Executive Producer Connie Cummings. They look forward to continuing to blend entertainment that weaves a sense of true purpose and meaning into our lives with a more conscious approach to filmmaking. THE PERFECT FAMILY will be released by Variance Films May 4th in NYC, LA and on demand with a wide release on May 11th. Boston LGBT Film Fest 2012 | Amit Dixit, Communications Director of the Boston LGBT Film Festival which is celebrating its 28th year and runs from May 3rd to the 13th talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. There are over 100 features and shorts participating in this year’s film festival. Opening night on May 3rd will take place at the Institute of Contemporary Art with the screening of the Italian film LOOSE CANNONS (Mine Vaganti) directed by Ferzan Ozpetek with English subtitles. This smart comedy is about the conservative Catholic Cantone family who own and operate a pasta factory in southern Italy. Tommaso is the youngest son who lives in Rome where he studies literature and lives with his boyfriend. Tommaso decides to tell his parents the truth about himself but when he is finally ready to come out in front of the entire family his older brother Antonio ruins his plans. Opening night is co-presented by the Consolato Generale d'Italia Boston with opening remarks by the Italian Consul General Giuseppe Pastorelli. When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Dixit stated, “Growing up here in Boston and being part of the local Boston community, I currently sit on the Board of The History Project which is now in its 31st year, where we document the history of the LGBT community. The History Project has been a long-term supporter of the film festival. In fact we send most of our films to The History Project for preservation after they’re screened at the festival. I love their tag line, “You Make History 8 We’ll Preserve it.” And that sort of sums it up. We’ve made incredible strides in Massachusetts for marriage equality to recently having The Trans Bill passed which was an amazing moment to be there at the State House having Governor Deval Patrick sign the bill into law. And that also translates into what we do at the festival where we have a trans panel about the perception of the transgender community. I also sit on the Board of the Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD). In fact we have been with Mary Bonauto at the federal appeals court fighting DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). So all of this is extremely exciting and it’s amazing to be in such a vibrant community where history is taking place yet again.” To attend opening night at the ICA on May 3rd there are a limited number of tickets available so act fast to avail upon this unique opportunity to join the film-set and mingle with the paparazzi. GLAAD Media Awards Red Carpet ‘12 | Celebrities on the Red Carpet at the 23rd GLAAD MEDIA Awards in NYC talk with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson, host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. John Stamos and Broadway Legend Bernadette Peters presented the Vito Russo Award to the producing team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago, Hairspray, Smash). Craig and Neil talked with us on the Red Carpet about LGBTQ teen bullying and the new film they’re producing about Constance McMillen for LIFETIME TV. Constance McMillen was the young teenager who ignited such national controversy in 2010 when she was banned from bringing a female date to her prom in Mississippi’s Itawamba County School District. The incident brought such national attention as she appeared on network talk shows including Ellen DeGeneres and met with President Obama to tell her story. In his acceptance speech Zadan stated, "I want to thank GLAAD for selecting us to be honored, and for their extraordinary work every single day. When we did THE REAGANS movie, we had death threats for telling the truth about that President's outright refusal to acknowledge the growing AIDS crisis in America. We would not have survived that ordeal, I must point out, without the help of GLAAD. They got us through the political firestorm leveled against us by the Republican National Committee. So we got to see first hand what GLAAD's capable of accomplishing when they mobilize the troops, and thank God for them." Zadan finished his acceptance by thanking his late friend and GLAAD's founder, Vito Russo, "Some people become your heroes and they don't even know it. Vito Russo was mine. And the lucky thing for me was I got to tell him while he was here”. We also talked about crucial LGBT issues facing our community with emphasis on LGBTQ teen bullying with celebrities including: fashion guru Carson Kressley, fierce gay allies Broadway stars Bernadette Peters and actress Megan Hilty, GLAAD Board of Directors co-chair Sheri Fults, GLAAD Acting President Mike Thompson, the fabulous transgender actress Laverne Cox, Robin Skye whose play SOUTHERN COMFORT won for Outstanding New York Theatre Off-Off Broadway, Zach Wahls who appeared in a GLAAD Media Award-nominated episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show and received a standing ovation as he spoke to the crowd about the impact of his 2011 speech to the Iowa senate in which he spoke about his lesbian moms. Then we chatted with NY INK’s ROBEAR, figure skater Johnny Weir and his new husband Victor Voronov, actress Kim Wayans talked about her role playing the mother on PARIAH which won the award for Outstanding Film- Limited Release, CHOPPED host Ted Allen shared his spin on LGBT issues and we concluded with Jay Manuel sharing his advice for LGBTQ teens faced with the bully epidemic. The 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards were hosted by GLEE stars Naya Rivera and Corey Monteith and sponsored by Ketel One and Wells Fargo at Marriott Marquis Theater on March 24, 2012 in New York City. FOR & AGAINST Gay TV Series | Jim Morrison who hosts the new 30 minute political analysis series FOR 8 AGAINST on here! TV talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson, host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. FOR 8 AGAINST offers viewers the chance to explore news and headlines through a uniquely LGBT lens. Each episode features Morrison digging deeper into the issues to focus on how everything from campaign finance to current and future White House policy effects our LGBT people. Additionally, Morrison sits down with top policymakers and pundits spanning the political landscape and challenges them on the issues that influence LGBT voters. We talked to Morrison about FOR 8 AGAINST and his spin on our LGBT community’s concerns in this Presidential election year. When asked what’s his impression of the anti-gay GOP candidates running for President, Morrison stated, “Oh God, I mean the answer to that question is implicit in the question. I mean it’s disappointing, really disappointing. This is not a winning issue for them. I think they’re using the 2004 playbook and the 2008 playbook where they could turn out people who were against marriage equality but the polls are showing that is not the case. So I think it’s just like this war on women. It’s like they put their eggs in one basket and that’s just not going to do it. They’re going to be shocked when I think they’re going to lose significantly by concentrating on these issues. But even more frustrating is when you look at the LGBT Republican groups. Now I have no problem with if you want to be fiscally conservative, I get that. That’s part of the American discussion. We have different views, that’s how we get good policy. But to suggest that you can be for any of these candidates, whether it’s Mitt Romney or even Ron Paul, without examining fundamentally what their positions are on our very identities bothers me. There’s a lot of people who say that Ron Paul is in favor of marriage equality but the fact is he’s not. He hides behind these states rights issues and then he goes and supports DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), which clearly is against us.” Morrison is a liberal-leaning pundit not afraid to challenge convention. He is a graduate of the Georgetown School of Foreign Service and holds a law degree from Columbia University with an emphasis on Constitutional Law and Civil Rights. Jim ran for the New Jersey State Senate and successfully litigated the first sexual orientation discrimination case against a high school student. Additionally, he was a finalist on the first season of the reality series THE MOLE and was subsequently, the first openly gay man to be placed on People magazine’s “Most Eligible Bachelor” list. Girl Bar Dinah Event in Las Vegas | Dr. Robin Gans who founded GIRL BAR in Los Angeles with Sandy Sachs in 1990 talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. GIRL BAR is the largest dance and entertainment group for lesbians in the United States. After moving to LA from New York in the late 80’s, Sachs and Gans recognized the need for an upscale nightclub catering to the lesbian community. “We wanted to do something to help make the lesbian community more visible and create a place for women to come together,” said GIRL BAR co-founder, Sandy Sachs. “GIRL BAR is a place where our patrons can come and feel safe, feel comfortable and most of all feel empowered,” adds Robin. Now the duo is producing GIRL BAR DINAH SHORE WEEKEND LAS VEGAS April 27th to 29th with Linda Fusco and Michele Agnew of TRUCK STOP GIRLZ. We talked about the move to Las Vegas and Robin’s spin on crucial issues facing our LGBT community. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Dr. Gans stated, “Well first of all I’m a licensed clinical psychologist in the State of California and certainly I know what it’s like to be coming out. Actually when I was in college and having those feelings when I was in high school, I went to private school back east, so one of the things that I always wanted to do was work with the gay community to help fellow gays and lesbians to not only come out but to have clearly a much better understanding of themselves and a much more integrated self. So I have several patients that are within the gay and lesbian community and I’ve worked with couples. When I was training I worked with the LA Gay and Lesbian Center for a year and I worked with troubled teens. I actually did an internship with them for a year, some who were definitely gay at the ages of fifteen and sixteen. Certainly I feel a commitment within my community and I feel a personal commitment in general just being involved with HRC and with any fundraiser, and anything that really contributes to awareness and obviously political rights in the LGBTQ community. LOVE ALONE New Gay Play | Deborah Salem Smith, Playwright-in-Residence at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence Rhode Island talks about her new play LOVE ALONE with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. The play takes on medical malpractice, gay marriage and LGBTQ family rights. The play is about after a routine medical procedure goes tragically wrong, a lawsuit ensues and the lives of both the patient's family and the doctor charged with her care are transformed. This is a lovingly drawn portrait of how we grieve and how we heal. LOVE ALONE will have its World Premiere at Trinity Rep March 16th and runs through May 27th. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Deborah stated. “I’ve been with my partner for a long time and we have two young children together. So it’s really important to me when I realized that I had not been writing plays with gay characters in them, which is really bizarre and embarrassing. So it was important to me to put a gay family in the center of the story. The character Helen who has lost her partner of twenty years, her grief is grief we can all, regardless of sexuality can recognize and empathize with. This is the story of two women who are deeply in love and the unexpected death of one of them in minor surgery is a huge emotional tragedy for her partner, for the couple’s daughter and I think to some degree, which I think is important, for the audience to experience that too. And to let go of distinguishing gay-straight and just be reminded that a devoted couple regardless of any of these labels you want to put on it, is a relationship that we all recognize and empathize with.” LOVE ALONE received an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award to support its premiere at Trinity Repertory Company and also was recognized with an Honorable Mention by the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award. Deborah Salem Smith’s previous honors include an Emerging American Artist Fulbright for playwriting in Dublin, Ireland, where she worked with the Abbey Theatre, Ireland's national theater, and served as a Visiting Academic at the Trinity College School of Drama. Her work has been recognized by a National Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities, a MacDowell Fellowship, a Colby Fellowship, a Major Hopwood Award, as well as writing and visual arts prizes from the University of Michigan and Princeton University. LOVE ALONE runs from March 16th through May 27th at the Trinity Rep in Providence, Rhode Island. Gay GOP Runs For President | Fred Karger, the first openly gay Presidential Candidate from a major political party in American history talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. He was on the GOP ballot in New Hampshire and Michigan and has received confirmation that his name will appear on the ballot in California, New York, Maryland, North Carolina and Puerto Rico. Fred Karger was the first to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for President of the United States on March 23, 2011. Throughout his career, Karger has worked on nine presidential campaigns and served as a senior consultant on campaigns for Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and Gerald Ford. He retired after 27 years and has since become an activist for gay rights, including his organization Californians Against Hate (now Rights Equal Rights) to investigate the LDS Church and the National Organization for Marriage in their campaigns against marriage equality in California and Maine. When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Karger stated, “Well, as someone who struggled so much as an adolescent and through my teen years, someone who went to psychiatrists when I was in college to try and switch because it was the early seventies, it sounded viable; you thought there were options. Fortunately the three different ones that I went to, which was a trial to see which one I would go to, I asked all three about switching, fortunately each said, ‘Sorry, we can’t do that. We can work with you but it’s impossible.’ So I’m glad I had some very good help and advise back then when I was twenty-one. Actually I met somebody named Dan Brewster when I was twenty-one and he was just this great role model and I realized that it was okay to be gay. You could be like Dan Brewster. There wasn’t even a word ‘gay’ back then, it kind of evolved like everything else. I had to struggle and live a double life. I didn’t tell my parents until I was forty-one, or my sibling. I really didn’t come out publicly or professionally until I was fifty-six years old. And while I had a healthy gay life it was very limited and it was a terrible existence to have that double life. So now I’m into my sixties and have absolutely no hang-ups obviously as running for President. I really want to let that message resonate throughout the country and as it happens through all the international coverage I’ve gotten, through the world. If you happen to be gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgender or queer, you can do anything you want to do. You can even run for President of The United States.” Fred Karger is one of the bravest gay activists that our LGBT community has. His mere visibility in the most homophobic race for President this country has ever seen will be something to watch and take note of. Karger says he’ll stick around until August for the Republican Convention in Tampa that takes place August 27th through August 30th 2012. AGORAFABULOUS! by Sara Benincasa | Sara Benincasa, award-winning comedian/writer talks to Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about her new must-read book AGORAFABULOUS! Dispatches from My Bedroom based on her acclaimed one-woman show. The book chronicles her journey through a panic disorder that developed into agoraphobia by the age of 21. Her fears were so severe she was afraid to leave her own bedroom and sank into a suicidal depression. With the help of her friends and family she was able to work through the darkest time of her life and find light and laughter at the end of the tunnel. Sara is very outspoken on LGBT issues and is a fierce gay ally. Born and raised in New Jersey we thought we’d get her spin on Governor Chris Christie vetoing gay marriage in her home state and other issues facing our LGBT community. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Benincasa stated, “I would say that it’s pretty huge. I would consider myself an ally more than anything else. I mean I’m a woman, I have dated women but I certainly wouldn’t identify as lesbian. I use to identify as bisexual but then I thought about it, well bisexual sounds like fifty-fifty and I’m not fifty-fifty so maybe I shouldn’t use that term. So I would just say that I am certainly an active ally.” Sara Benincasa’s outspoken, sexually-charged comedy has won praise from the Chicago Tribune, CNN, The Guardian, The New York Times, and has earned her an ECNY (Emerging Comedian of New York) Award and a Webby nomination. Currently Sara is traveling throughout America on the AGORAFABULOUS! Book Reading Show. Her upcoming schedule is as follows: Saturday March 3rd at 4P at Bookhampton, East Hampton, NY, Thursday March 8th at 7P Barnes and Noble, Houston, Texas. Sara will be appearing on Friday March 9th at the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas. Marriage Equality USA Update | Ned Flaherty, Project Manager Election 2012 for the national LGBT organization Marriage Equality USA talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. We talked to Ned about the map he has created revealing the encouraging news that 42% of Americans now live in the 21 states that offer some form of legal recognition at the state level for same-gender relationships. The map illustrates the states offering partial equality as well as itemizing the 30 states where various bans on marriage by law, by constitution, or both law and constitution that remain in effect. Ned Flaherty lives in Massachusetts where gay marriage is celebrating its eighth anniversary in May. When asked what his reaction has been to the recent momentum of gay marriage passing in Washington state, Prop 8 being found unconstitutional in California by the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit and the possibility of marriage equality passing in New Jersey and Maryland, Flaherty stated, “I expect that every state that passes marriage equality in any significant way is going to have the same experience we’ve had for the last eight years in Massachusetts and that is first of all none of the dire consequences threatened by the religious evangelicals or the rightwing Republicans have ever occurred here. The second thing is a couple of dramatic improvements. One is there’s more business revenue and more tax revenue into the state government simply as the result of the additional marriage business going on here. And the third thing is Massachusetts has one of the lowest divorce rates now in the nation. The nation hasn’t had such a divorce rate as low as Massachusetts for decades. So I think that among those states you mentioned and the others that you didn’t mention, as they all move closer towards marriage equality, they’re going to find more business, more government tax revenue and none of the frightening harms that the equality opponents always talk about.” As Project Manager Election 2012 Flaherty has also created the Election 2012 Project at Marriage Equality USA to show twelve major ways in which LGBT people still are not equal citizens, to expand the national dialogue and to provide usable data to candidates, journalists and voters. Since the project began some presidential candidates have gradually increased their overall support for LGBT equality. Prop 8 Lawyers Speak OUT | Ted Olson and David Boies and the American Foundation for Equal Rights held an audio press conference two hours after Prop 8 was found unconstitutional by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson Host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ participated in this historic discussion with members of the press, AFER Board President Chad Griffin and lead co-counsel Ted Olson and David Boies. In an opinion authored by Judge Stephen Reinhardt, the Ninth Circuit concluded that Proposition 8 violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, “Proposition 8 serves no purpose and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples. The Constitution simply does not allow for laws of this sort,” Judge Reinhardt wrote. In his opening remarks about this enormous victory for our LGBT community Ted Olson stated, “When we started this trial the very first words that we spoke when the trial began in San Francisco was that this case is about marriage and equality. It’s about the right to marry and this decision today affirms the importance in American society of the right to marry. The very proponents who opposed us in this case talked about how important marriage was. The difference is that they wanted to keep it for themselves. They wanted to deny this relationship, this institution, this building block of our society, the most fundamental right according to the Supreme Court that we have in America. They wanted to deny that right to a large segment of our society because they felt that those persons were unequal or undeserving and should be treated differently under the California Constitution. This case was about marriage and it’s also about freedom and decency. How we are going to treat our fellow citizens, our brothers and sisters, our cousins and our neighbors. Are we going to treat them with the same dignity that we ourselves enjoy in this country? The District Court earlier and the Ninth Circuit today ringingly reaffirmed the right to equality, the fundamental right to marriage and the fact that it cannot be denied to citizens on the basis of their sexual orientation or the basis of sex. This is a very significant milepost on the way to equality in this country. We’re not there yet. One of these days soon I suspect, I feel strongly that we will be. So this is a very important decision and it was 80 pages of tightly reasoned, very thoughtfully articulated Supreme Court analysis, so we are one major step forward and we’re very grateful to the Ninth Court for upholding the right of the citizens in California.” For More Info: afer.org Interview w/ Dustin Lance Black 8 His Play '8' Hear 90+ LGBT Leaders Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES™ | 2/13/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

February 24th talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. The Boston LGBT Film Festival is presenting the New England Premiere of SHE’S LIVING FOR THIS on Thursday February 9th at Canary Square in JP. Sherry Vine is attending and will be available for a Q 8 A after the screening. SHE’S LIVING FOR THIS is a unique modern update of the classic TV variety show standard set by the likes of Carol Burnett and Sonny 8 Cher. This fabulous fun-filled half hour is packed with some of the edgiest queer comics and entertainers on the scene and is bursting at the sequined seams with comedy sketches, special guests and musical numbers. Confirmed guests for the first three shows of the six-episode first season include Tony-nominated performance artist Justin Vivian Bond, drag diva Peppermint, and cabaret singer and New York City legend Joey Arias. We talked about the new show and Sherry’s spin on crucial issues facing our LGBT community. When asked what her commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Vine stated, “I believe that I have a daily commitment to LGBT rights. First of all just by being openly gay and second of all performing in drag. I think a lot of people don’t realize that drag is a political act in itself because of what you have to go through just the minute you walk out the door. I mean people for some reason see it as an open invitation to be very hostile and abusive or weird. Not always, people can be very cool and funny and nice but it’s dangerous, especially for people who don’t live in a big city. Taxi’s will just fly right by you. You know I vote, I do a lot of benefits for different organizations, so I just try to be as involved as I can.” The Boston LGBT Film Festival will be hosting the New England Premiere of SHE'S LIVING FOR THIS on Thursday February 9th from 9P-10P at Canary Square 435 South Huntington Ave, Jamaica Plain, MA. Please join us for the sneak preview of the show, enjoy stationary bar appetizers provided by Canary Square 9-10P with a special menu insert during dinner, a cash bar with smart cocktails, make new friends and support the Boston LGBT Film Festival. NY Ink’s Gay Tattoo Shop Manager | Robear Chinosi, NY INK’s gay tattoo shop manager talks to Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about the TLC reality show’s dramatic second season which includes his search to find the man of his dreams in a notoriously macho world. Robear is also a fierce gay activist and shares his thoughts about crucial issues facing our LGBT community. When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Robear stated, “I’m very committed to the cause of gay and lesbian civil rights because as a gay man I’m just immersed in that community more and more. Now that I’m on television I have a platform and a voice to hopefully make a change and be a role model. You know we’ve been fighting since the sixties for equality. We are making progress but then we get pushed back a little and then we make more progress. You know it’s just fighting for what is right and what straight people have. Why wouldn’t we have the same rights as anyone else? We love the same, we’re human and it just happens that we love the same sex. I’m heavily involved with HRC and GLAAD. I support all those organizations that have really made such progress and have put this into the forefront of society. Especially with the government, you know we’re taxpayers and we’re part of the community. Why are we not getting the same rights as everyone else? I can only hope in this lifetime that I see it come full circle and that we get the same rights.” Chinosi is an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ teens who are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers after facing bullying incidents. Robear shared his personal experiences of being bullied and gay bashed. He stated, “What got me through is that I knew from an early age that I wanted to become a leader in our community and now hopefully and successfully I have stepped into my role as a social influencer in the world of fashion, design and television.” NY Ink airs Thursdays on TLC at 9P EST. Dustin Lance Black New Play “8″ | Dustin Lance Black, Academy Award-winning screenwriter for the film MILK and the new critically-acclaimed film J. EDGAR, talks about his new play “8” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Based on the Prop 8 trial in California. “8” is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown), the case filed by the American Foundation for Equal Rights to overturn Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the fundamental freedom to marry. “8” finally provides the audience with the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families. As you know there has been a battle in California over allowing the public access to viewing the original tapes of this trial. “People need to witness what happened in the Proposition 8 trial, if for no other reason than to see inequality and discrimination unequivocally rejected in a court of law where truth and facts matter,” said Black. On March 3rd for one night only “8” will have its West Coast Premiere in Los Angeles with an All-Star Cast including: Matt Bomer, Campbell Brown, George Clooney, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Cleve Jones, Christine Lahti, Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, Rory O’Malley, Rob Reiner, Martin Sheen, Yeardley Smith, and George Takei. When asked about the West Coast Premiere of “8” Black stated, “It’s a huge testament I think to the cause that this has universal reach. The people we just named are straight, gay and lesbian and they understand that this issue touches someone in their lives, if not themselves then someone in their lives. We all know it’s time to stop the discrimination and to treat all Americans equal under the law and to send a message to young people that their love will be valued when they grow up, that their lives are equally valued in this country. We did the play in New York with a great cast and now we’re doing it in LA. It is important that we continue to raise the money we need and every dime goes to American Foundation for Equal Rights to fund the federal case for equal marriage as we head to the US Supreme Court and a decision that will effect the entire country.” Dustin who serves on the board of The Trevor Project also addressed the LGBTQ Teen Bullying epidemic and other issues affecting our LGBT community. Throughout 2012, AFER and Broadway Impact are licensing “8” for free to colleges and community theatres nationwide in order to spur action, dialogue and understanding. Gay Catholics & The Pope | Marianne Duddy-Burke, Executive Director of DignityUSA, the nation’s foremost LGBT Catholic organization talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Recent polls show high levels of support for LGBT people among Catholics yet the Pope and bishops continue to lead attacks on civil rights for gay people. In Pope Benedict’s 2012 outrageous New Year’s speech to diplomats from approximately 180 countries the Pope said policies allowing gay marriage “threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself.” We talked to Marianne about being Catholic and issues facing our LGBT community. When asked for her reaction to Pope Benedict’s hurtful and homophobic attack on our LGBT community, Duddy-Burke, stated, “Unfortunately it’s become almost a New Year’s ritual for the Pope to attack same-gender marriage and marriage equality. We’ve seen it year after year in his speeches when he’s looking at the state of the world. It’s tragic, it’s sad and it’s very misinformed. Once again it just shows the deep divide that exists between the leaders of the Catholic Church and regular Catholics who are out there in their lives and their jobs and their neighbors and their families, who know and love gay and lesbian people and bisexual and transgender people. And who more and more support our rights to have loving, committed relationships legally affirmed.” Marianne Duddy-Burke received a Masters in Theology from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts and was an Honors graduate of Wellesley College. Marianne speaks regularly at conferences around the country on issues of importance to LGBT Catholics and their families. She was featured in the video DignityUSA: A Conversation with Marianne Duddy and her work has been included in several books, including, most recently, Redemption Stories: Stories of Survival and Transformation. Marianne lives in Boston, Massachusetts with her spouse Becky Duddy-Burke and their two adopted daughters, Emily and Infinity. Gay Republicans in 2012 | R. Clarke Cooper, Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans talks Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Now that the 2012 Presidential race has begun we thought we’d get his spin on the GOP candidates running for President and where they stand on gay rights. We talked to Clarke about the Iowa Caucus with Romney and Santorum finishing head to head, the upcoming primaries, the GOP candidates who signed the Family Leader's anti-gay marriage pledge and more. The last time Democrats and Republicans were in agreement on LGBT issues was during the Carter-Ford election back in 1976. When asked where the Republican Party stands on our LGBT issues today, Cooper stated, “Well Charlotte that’s a very good question and that’s a question asked by fellow Republicans within the party. There’s actually a divide that’s mostly generational within the party. What I mean by that is one can look at the generational groups within the party. Log Cabin Republicans are only one of many ancillary groups in the party. We happen to be the gay group but you also have groups that are more generationally oriented. Young Republicans, College Republicans are where you find most of your millennials, the people who are thirty and under. Why is this important you ask? It is important because these are the registered Republicans who are either supportive of gay rights at best or minimally are agnostic when it comes to issues like marriage equality, employment nondiscrimination or at the time, the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. It’s a huge divide and that’s not just anecdotal it’s actually measured by internal polling by conservatives for conservatives and also reflective in polling in media like CNN, ABC, you name it. It is noted by the party that there is that shift.” Before taking the helm of the Log Cabin Republicans Clarke worked with the George W. Bush Administration for eight years and is an Army Reserve Captain who served in Iraq during DADT. Now that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has been repealed we talked to him about what’s it like serving as an officer in the Army Reserve. We also discussed how he would rate the Obama administration’s performance on LGBT civil rights and what advise he would have for LGBTQ teens who are facing bullying incidents. 2012 Gay Rights Update | Rev. Richard Emmanuel, Founder of The Church, a non profit organization in East Gloucester, MA, that is dedicated to raising individual and collective consciousness and increasing spiritual awareness talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. We called on Emmanuel, a visionary and dedicated political activist to give us his brutally honest spin on what 2012 may bring our LGBT community and more. When asked his impression of the anti gay GOP candidates running for President, Emmanuel stated, “This is tragic. The Republican Party was a viable process within the development of these United States. It was Lincoln in the process of saving the Republic, keeping it together; it was a whole process of looking at life and the process of what state rights, what federal rights and so forth. What we have now is a party of clowns. Everyone is just using these very volatile, anti this, anti that, against this, against that, these people this, that who, what, all of this is made to create confusion. This is not solving any problems. These candidates are running on hatred. They’re running on anger. This is no process of a clear conscience of a nation. This is just pitting one group against the other and the oldest adage of Roman times, Caesar’s adage ‘Divide and Conquer.’ This is the oldest trick in the last 2000 years and they still play the game. When I see GOP I see ‘Greed Over People’. We’ve got to turn this around. It has to be about people.” Emmanuel also addresses ‘2012: end of the world as we know it’ theories, the Obama administration, the controversy surrounding Bradley Manning, marriage equality and LGBTQ teens who are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Kate Clinton 2011 Gay Retro | Kate Clinton our favorite gay political humorist reflects with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about 2011 and what 2012 will bring our LGBT community. This has been an amazing year for our LGBT community starting with the repeal and then the certification of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Last summer gay marriage finally passed in New York and the Respect of Marriage Act was introduced in the US Senate taking us a step closer to repealing the Defense of Marriage Act. The year ended on a fabulous note with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s speech to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland stating “Some have suggested that gay rights and human rights are separate and distinct but in fact they are one and the same. Like being a woman, like being a racial, religious, tribal, or ethnic minority, being LGBT does not make you less human. And that is why gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights." When asked how she felt about gay marriage passing in her state Clinton stated, “Well I am a Cuomo-sexual. It was pretty exciting that our Governor was able to ride herd on some really wrangling gay organizations that had not been united in their effort to get gay marriage or marriage equality in the state. And he really did that and he was able to get some big money interest in to do the fight and also to promise senators who had voted for gay marriage that we would be behind them when they ran for reelection and that’s really happening now. So I find it really exciting and since I do live in New York, I’m a New York resident, I feel a lot of pressure now. My girl and I have been together almost twenty four years and our little six year old neighbor from across the hall in New York is like on our case to get married. It’s a lot of pressure.” We also addressed Obama and LGBT advancements, the anti-gay GOP presidential candidates, LGBTQ teen bullying crisis and more. Clinton also gave us a little preview of her new ALL FRACKED UP Tour for 2012. Kate's hyperbolic fracking method shakes the bedrock of the comedy mother lode with seismic aftershocks of laughter. She vents about global weirding. Tosses an occu-pie in the face of banksters; Glitter-bombs presidential politics; Spelunks some LGBT schist. Mud will be flung. Warning: dikes could be in danger of collapse. It's a blast! She's a gas! And after, Kate always cleans up her own fracking mess. PARIAH The Movie | PARIAH Writer/Director, Dee Rees and Star, Adepero Oduye talk about their new must-see film with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. We chatted with Rees and Oduye at a special screening of the film presented by Focus Features and the Boston LGBT Film Festival at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Massachusetts. Pariah is the feature-length expansion of writer/director Dee Rees' award-winning 2007 short film Pariah. Spike Lee is among the feature's executive producers. Adepero Oduye, who had earlier starred in the short film, portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents Audrey and Arthur (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister Sharonda (Sahra Mellesse) in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry and is a gifted student at her local high school. Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the sometimes boisterous support of her best friend, out lesbian Laura (Pernell Walker), Alike is especially eager to find a girlfriend. At home, her parents' marriage is strained and there is further tension in the household whenever Alike's development becomes a topic of discussion. Pressed by her mother into making the acquaintance of a colleague's daughter, Bina (Aasha Davis), Alike finds Bina to be unexpectedly refreshing to socialize with. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity - sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward. When asked about dealing with homophobia among the Afro-American community, Dees stated, “I wasn’t trying to make any general statements about homophobia in the Afro-American community because it’s such a varied experience. I think there’s still homophobia across all communities. But in this particular story I actually want to show how people reacted to it differently. Alike’s mother and father have different reactions versus Bina, the love interest and even the fast girls at school. I wanted to show how there’s not a single response to it within the community and that’s what complicates Alike’s journey as she tries to find herself. And I just wanted to show, if people take away one thing, I want them to know that it’s OK not to check a box; it’s OK to be yourself because Alike’s struggle is as much within the gay community as it is in the straight community. She’s being told to dress a certain way, act a certain way or a certain persona and she realizes that that is not so.” PARIAH opens in select cities on December 28th. Arline Isaacson LGBT Rights Update | Arline Isaacson, Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Gay 8 Lesbian Political Caucus who was instrumental in the passing of gay marriage in Massachusetts talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Isaacson shares her thoughts about Barney Frank announcing his retirement in 2012, Mitt Romney claiming he’s for gay rights, and other issues concerning our LGBT community. Congressman Barney Frank joins 14 Democratic US Reps who are not seeking re-election in 2012. When asked what her reaction was to Frank’s decision to retire, Isaacson stated, “Well it’s obviously a mega loss for our LGBT community and clearly a mega loss for the progressive community. Barney was, is, one of the brightest, sharpest, most hardworking, insightful, politically savvy, knowledgeable congressman that we have or could have. In spite of his reputation as being persnickety when dealing with people he managed in the congressional world to move about very successfully because he was very politic more often than not. He delivered significantly for the LGBT community and the progressive community for the last three decades as a brilliant advocate and it’s a real loss for us as progressives having someone who so articulately framed the debate for LGBT equality. And just as importantly, argumentally more important, knew how to maneuver in the halls of Congress and the White House to maximize what we could get out of the battles our community was engaged in.” Recently Mitt Romney told the Nashua Telegraph, “I favor gay rights. I don’t believe in discriminating in employment or opportunity for gay individuals.” Though Romney still opposes gay marriage we asked Arline what her spin was about this. Isaacson stated, “Romney is of course known for having his feet planted firmly on both sides of many key issues. LGBT rights is but one of those issues. Having been accused of flip flopping many times on important issues, Romney has finally learned that his positions and quotes frequently come back to haunt him when he tries to appeal to an audience with different views. So he now speaks equivocally. If he has been 'accused' of supporting the LGBT community, he might as while pretend he does.” We also talked about the lawsuits to repeal DOMA (The Defense of Marriage Act), Obama’s performance on LGBT civil rights, the LGBTQ teen bullying epidemic and the legislation Isaacson hopes to pass in Massachusetts addressing this crucial issue. I asked him and his manager called and said that Rufus has an hour on a certain day so we had the song ready so we totally got it together. So we went into the studio and banged it out in an hour. It was pretty amazing. He was great to work with.” With three Juno Awards, (Canadian Grammy), a Genie Award, (Canadian Oscar) and four Gold, one Platinum and one double Platinum records to her credit, Carole Pope is an icon of transgressive music. Throughout her career, Carole Pope has blazed a trail sharing her thoughts on sexuality, AIDS and sexual politics. Her music makes you think and dance at the same time. When asked when she thought America would catch up to Canada on LGBT Civil Rights Pope stated. “I think America is catching up. I think it’s a matter of educating the public and I think the public is not so concerned as it was because there are so many other issues like unemployment and the big banks and all of that. So I think slowly but surely America will catch up with Canada. American was once a cutting edge nation and now it’s behind everyone in a lot of ways. Get More European. Get More Canadian. I think a lot of kids today don’t really care. I think it’s older white dudes who kind of use LGBT issues as a political thing.” Pope is the author of a best selling autobiography entitled Anti Diva published by Random House. The mission of this non-profit organization co-founded by music icon and fierce gay ally Cyndi Lauper is to assist gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth who have been thrown out of their homes by their parents or primary custodians because of their sexual orientation. Recently the West End Intergenerational Residence which Cyndi is co-founder of opened the TRUE COLORS RESIDENCE in Harlem, New York for a diverse group of LGBTQ homeless youth. There are also social and educational programs provided. The goal of the TRUE COLORS RESIDENCE is to open similar facilities nationwide. When asked how he became involved in the TRUE COLORS FUND, Lewis stated, “Well I’ve known Cyndi and her manager Lisa Barbaris for a number of years. I use to work at the Human Rights Campaign for many years and was the Managing Director for the Matthew Shepard Foundation. So I knew them from both of those organizations and I was very friendly with them and helped them with their advocacy work. And when they were ready to take the TRUE COLORS TOUR to the next level they asked me to come and work with them. It was a great honor and of course I said yes immediately and I have been with them for 4 years now.” It is estimated that 20 percent to 40 percent of all homeless youth identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The TRUE COLORS FUND is committed to doing what it can to raise awareness about this issue and develop resources to help these young people, most of whom are homeless because of their sexual orientation. New Margaret Cho Concert DVD | Actress Comedian Margaret Cho talks about her new Showtime Comedy Special CHO DEPENDENT available on DVD November 22nd with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Beginning with her early days on the scene in the Bay Area Margaret Cho has always been the Agent Provocateur of stand up. Never one to shy away from difficult, or even 'taboo' topics, there is no subject off limits. Her socially aware brand of comedy has made her a fierce gay activist that opens hearts and minds. Her latest stand-up concert film, CHO DEPENDENT recorded during her 2010 tour, finds Margaret in her usual top form, riffing on smart topics that matter. We talked about her amazing year with her album and concert tour for CHO DEPENDENT, DWTS, co-starring in the Lifetime TV series DROP DEAD DIVA, her commitment to LGBT civil rights and more. In the Huffington Post Margaret wrote that she identifies herself as “Queer.” When asked if she could clarify what that term means to her, Cho stated, “To me queer is really a balance of everything. To me it encompasses homosexual and also heterosexual. To me that’s like the equality that I have within me and the equanimity I have within me. And then there are my politics that are really all about gay rights and so to me although I am married and I’m in a heterosexual marriage, I also identify as homosexual. To me that is what queer is. There are a lot of different definitions of queer but to me my queer politics come from a pretty impressive pedigree. I grew up in San Francisco. I grew up around the times of Harvey Milk and experienced that wave of politics. I experienced a lot of what became the modern foundation of what gay politics is. The impulse to fight AIDS and the impulse to raise money to make sure that people were protected when it came to policy when it came to AIDS. So that’s really what my background is and that’s what my queer politics are.” CHO DEPENDENT is Margaret’s sixth live concert film, shot at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA. The DVD shares a name with her Grammy nominated comedy album. Joining Margaret on the album were artists Fiona Apple, Andrew Bird, Grant Lee Phillips, Tegan 8 Sara, Ben Lee and more. The CHO DEPENDENT DVD features songs from the album interwoven into the thought provoking stories. There’s really something for everyone. CHO DEPENDENT made its debut on Showtime on October 15th and is on Comcast On-Demand. The DVD is set to be released on November 22, 2011 via Rocket Science. The DVD also features “Behind The Scenes” backstage bonus footage. For More Info: margaretcho.com Hear 90+ LGBT Leaders Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES™ | 11/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Barney Frank LGBT Issues Update | Congressman Barney Frank, (D-MA) talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about LGBT issues and more. Congressman Frank was in attendance at Assi Azar’s coming out film MOM 8 DAD: I HAVE SOMETHING TO TELL YOU in celebration of OUT in ISRAEL MONTH. Throughout the month of November advocacy organizations in and around Boston have joined together along with politicians, filmmakers, artists, musicians, students and other activists to celebrate the vibrant LGBT communities in Israel and Massachusetts. We talked to Congressman Frank to get his spin on the film, LGBTQ teen bullying and federal LGBT civil rights. When asked if he thought in the next year anymore (federal) legislation has a chance of passing Congressman Frank stated, “None whatsoever with the Republicans in charge. The only chance you ever have to adopt pro LGBT legislation is if you have a Democratic President, House and Senate. I wish that wasn’t the case. In 1976 Jimmy Carter and Gerry Ford were equal on the LGBT issues. Since then the Democrats have gotten a lot better, not quite perfect and the Republicans have gotten a lot worse. So long as you have Republicans in power there simply is no chance. I do believe if we were to get a Democratic House, Senate and President we could move forward with some things but as long as the Republicans are in power we have to hold our own. In fact if you were to get a Republican President we would have to face the very real likelihood I think of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to be reinstated by that President.” Openly gay Congressman Barney Frank and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) are Co-Chairs of the Congressional LGBT Caucus. As part of the “It Gets Better Project,” they recently released a video message of hope and encouragement to our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and those questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. They are joined by the other two openly gay members of Congress, Jared Polis (D-CO) and David Cicilline (D-RI). Assi Azar on OUT in Israel | Assi Azar is a well-known Israeli TV personality who co-hosts the Israeli version of the Big Brother TV show talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. In 2005 Azar came out as an openly gay man. In 2009 he was chosen by OUT Magazine as one of the top 100 most influential gay people around the world. In 2010 he starred in the 45 minute documentary, “Mom and Dad, I Have Something to Tell You” where he shares his personal coming out experience. This fascinating Israeli documentary explores coming out from the parent’s perspective as well as from members of our LGBT community in Israel. “Mom and Dad, I Have Something to Tell You” was screened on November 6th at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge by the Boston LGBT Film Festival in celebration of OUT in Israel Month. Congressman Barney Frank was in attendance. When asked what his inspiration was for making the film, Azar stated, “Actually this production company approached me about making a movie about coming out. At the beginning I said no because I really didn’t see a reason to, but then, I don’t know if you heard of it, but this guy with a mask got inside a youth center where gay and lesbian kids play and shot all over and killed two kids. After that those kids were hospitalized in several hospitals and those parents found out their kids are gay just from the incident. They actually found out their kid was injured and gay at the same time. And I remember that one of the parents did not come to see his kid in the hospital because of his gay lifestyle. And I told my mom, ‘What kind of a parent doesn’t come to see his injured son?’ And she told me you cannot understand what is going on in a parent’s mind after he finds out his son is gay. And that immediately made me feel, God I really don’t know what happened to my mom and dad when I told them. That was the point when I decided to make this film.” Over the next few weeks Azar will be visiting the United States showing his 45 minute documentary “Mom and Dad, I Have Something to Tell You”. He is pleased to speak about his experience as a popular media broadcaster in the Middle East, as well as what it was like for him to come out openly as a gay man in his field and with media scrutiny upon him and his family. Assi Azar will be in Atlanta 11/8 to 11/10, NYC 11/11 to 11/13, San Francisco 11/13 to 11/15, Washington DC 11/16 to 11/17, Philadelphia 11/18 to 11/20 8 Miami 11/21 to 11/25. BAD SEX: The TV Show | Chris Donaghue, Sex Specialist, talks about his new television series BAD SEX that premieres on LOGO TV Friday, November 4th at 9P with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. BAD SEX follows the real-life experiences of 10 diverse participants undergoing an intensive two month program that explores their sex lives. The participants are male, female, gay and straight, ranging in age from 20 to 40 years old. They’ve come to the group with issues from dangerous promiscuity to clinical frigidity, violent sex addiction to compulsive public sex. Under Donaghue’s supervision they participate in a unique sex therapy group program where they finally address their deep-rooted issues around sex, infidelity, trust, relational intimacy and sex addiction. When asked if he thinks Americans have a difficult time embracing their sexuality, Donaghue stated, “American have the hardest time. I think we’re probably among the most sexually phobic and sexually negative cultures and it’s something from a very early age is repressed within you. Think about the words that parents use with their children when talking about anatomy, even into their adulthood. It’s words that express embarrassment and social taboo even though it’s a really common healthy basic drive and an important component of all our lives and that moves with you. Then we transmit that to our children and so it’s something we have to get more comfortable with because I think it’s our fear and phobia around it that actually created and sustains a lot of the major sexual issues. When I’m working with couples and I say this again on the show with some of the participants, there’s a lot of incorrect education and misinformation about sex. So my job on the show is to really re-inform and re-educate people and get them comfortable with what the real true basic norms are.” Christopher Donaghue is a sex expert specializing in the sexuality spectrum and addictive behaviors such as sexual compulsivity/sex addiction, as well as mood and relational intimacy disorders. Donaghue received his Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from Temple University and is currently finishing a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. He trained in couples and sex therapy at Florida's Post Graduate Sex Therapy training program, UCLA, and the Center for Healthy Sex. Chris currently specializes in couples and sex therapy, as well as running sex addiction, love addiction and sexuality group therapy at The Hills Treatment Center. He is a member of American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). “The Mere Future” A Gay Novel | Author Sarah Schulman talks about her most recent must-read novel THE MERE FUTURE with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Set in the not-too-distant future in New York City THE MERE FUTURE is about how the city has morphed into an idealized version of itself as the result of what the newly elected mayor calls The Big Change. Rent is cheap, homelessness is over and everyone works in marketing. Schulman invents a literature that reflects the lives we live right now while being funny, sexy and openhearted. With wit and provocative social commentary THE MERE FUTURE blows literary conventions right out of the water in this intriguing novel. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Schulman stated, “Actually I’m not interested in civil rights. I’ve spent my whole life as part of what use to be called the Gay Liberation Movement, which was an idea of transforming a society so that human beings have more freedom of movement and more freedom of expression. I find that the civil rights agenda, first of all it hasn’t succeeded, it also has been very limited. So in arenas in which we are acting exactly like straight people we do get some kind of nods. For example certain states do allow certain kinds of marriage laws but of course there are no federal rights. So when we’re in arenas where we’re very different than them (heterosexuals), in which we would need for example a federal antidiscrimination bill, then we can’t make any progress at all. So in a way the ‘rights’ agenda has channeled us into a very very narrow path and we’ve loss sight of our larger goals.” In 1987 Schulman joined ACT UP. She and her producing partner of 25 years Jim Hubbard have produced of a feature length documentary UNITED IN ANGER: A History of ACT UP, directed by Hubbard. The documentary uses archival footage and interviews from Hubbard and Schulman's ACT UP Oral History Project to tell the story of the AIDS activist organization and how they used direct action to transform the AIDS crisis. The film will have its world premier at a major film festival (TBA) in Winter 2012. Sarah is also a distinguished Professor of the Humanities at the City University of New York, College of Staten Island and a Fellow at the New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University. She is currently on THE MERE FUTURE book tour appearing Saturday Oct 22nd at 10A American Studies Association, Baltimore. Thursday Oct 27th at 7P Lincoln Nebraska annual LGBT dinner. Scott Thompson The Kid in the Hall | Actor/comedian Scott Thompson who we first fell in love with as one of the first openly gay characters on the hit TV show “The Kids in the Hall” talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. “The Kids in the Hall’ was a Canadian sketch comedy group formed in 1984 consisting of comedians Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson. Their television show known for its cross-dressing antics and infinite supply of bold gay characters ran from 1988 to 1994 on CBC in Canada and 1989 to 1995 on CBS and HBO. Scott talks about what it was like being one of the first openly gay characters on network television and today’s epidemic of LGBTQ teen bullying. LGBTQ teens are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. We continue to have numerous teens taking their own lives after facing bullying incidents. When asked what advise he would have for these kids, Thompson stated, “I remember when I was a kid absolutely I felt useless and I hated being gay but I totally fought off those feelings of worthlessness and suicide. It definitely was in my mind when I was a kid. What blows my mind is today the kids have it I think so much better and they’re still having a hard time. I think that is quite sad but at the same time, I think about what bullying is. I don’t believe you can have a world free from bullying. I think that is an impossible dream and I think to do that there would be so much social conditioning that you would have to do that I don’t think it’s worth it. I think you just have to, got to, develop a thick skin. The truth is once you get into the real world, it’s not GLEE! It really isn't... Here’s something about the whole bullying campaign. Those boys that are beating up kids and stuff, they don’t care what adults say. What you really need is people like The Rock to say it. Those kids need to hear The Rock and rappers and 50 Cent, they’re the ones that those boys need to hear.” Scott Thompson is currently touring with Kevin McDonald in “Two Kids One Hall”. LGBTQ teens are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. We continue to have numerous teens taking their own lives after facing bullying incidents. When asked what advise he would have for these kids, Lazin stated, “One of the things that we’re particularly pleased with was that last year there were over one thousand generators to LGBT history Month and the top 1/10 percent or top ten was The Trevor Project. So youth are coming to this site, they’re finding role models, finding empowerment and life affirming resources. What we’re suggesting is particularly GSA’s (Gay Straight Alliances) but more so to college students is “Make It Better.” I certainly applaud “It Gets Better’ but “Make It Better” really says take on the responsibility yourselves. So we’re asking colleges and universities around the country to download resources from LGBT History Month and create an LGBT History Month 2011 exhibit, particularly in a visible place on your campus like a college student union building. Those are the types of things that make change and certainly if anyone looks at this list of 31 icons for this year they’re hugely impressive and make a civil rights statement as to our national and international contributions.” The videos are offered without charge to educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, for profit companies and the public. 2011 marks the 6th anniversary of LGBT History Month, featuring 186 Icons from 2006 to 2011. Global LGBT Music Video Awards | Marlee Walchuk and her wife Tully Callender are the creators of RightOutTV who have launched the first music video awards for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender 8 Intersex artists on their global 24-hour streaming video channel. LGBTI musicians from around the world have been submitting their videos since word of this fabulous opportunity was announced earlier this month. The deadline for submissions was Friday September 30th and the Awards will be presented on November 27, 2011. When asked what they’re hoping to accomplish for our LGBT community with the RightOutTV Music Video Awards, Walchuk stated, “First of all more and broader exposure of the artists and the glimpses into LGBT life. I mean every time the artist creates a video about how they love and who they love and what their life looks like, that’s another wonderful view that the world has of us as a community. And music has always been a hugely powerful vehicle for activism. So we feel the music videos are particularly important for the world to actually just take a look and go ‘Hey we’re all the same, we love the same and we must deserve the same rights.’ So we actually see this as a very important layer that we’re putting out into the internet and into the world to help create change.” Openly LGBTI singer/songwriters from around the globe submitted videos to be voted upon by a prestigious panel of professionals in the Music 8 Arts industries. Judges’ nominees in each category will be announced October 30th and winners will be announced Nov. 27. There’s also a special category of RightOutTV Fan Fave, voting for this will begin Oct.7 and close on Nov. 7. “We’ve commissioned 22 successful, well respected professionals from press, film, music promotion, publishing and radio, including music producers from both the gay and the straight communities as our judges. Exposure to a panel of judges of this caliber will be immensely beneficial to these talented Out artists” says Producer Marlee Walchuk. THE GREEN New Gay Movie | Paul Marcarelli, actor/writer/producer, who has produced a fabulous new film called THE GREEN talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. THE GREEN has been winning LGBT Film Festivals nationwide and was presented by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Boston LGBT Film Festival on Sept 23rd. This was a special screening in celebration of the opening of the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art at the MFA. THE GREEN beautifully directed by Steven Williford is about a gay couple who leave behind a life in New York City for the village charm of shoreline Connecticut. Michael (Jason Butler Harner), a high school drama teacher thinks he can live a simple open life with his partner Daniel (Cheyenne Jackson) but Michael’s world is turned upside-down when he is accused of engaging in “inappropriate behavior” with a male student. With his job, relationship and freedom in jeopardy Michael must confront the suspicions of his co-workers, the latent homophobia of his friends and neighbors and his partner doubting his innocence after the investigation reveals a secret from his past. The film’s stellar cast also includes Julia Ormond with a fine performance by Illeana Douglas. When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights Marcarelli stated, “I guess in a lot of ways I’m trying to figure out what my role should be now. Maybe it’s telling stories and helping to shape the dialogue that way. There’s a lot of material out there for gay audiences that tends to pander to a presumed niche audience. I think a creative work is gay if a gay person makes it. It’s not gay if it hits a series of expected marks or has the same stock characters and the same dramatic arc with the gay guy inevitably dying in the end. Maybe my role is just telling these kind of stories.” THE GREEN will be released for@font-face { font-family: "Times New Roman"; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }table.MsoNormalTable { font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } distribution in October. Paul Marcarelli who’s probably best known as the Verizon Guy on TV, recently appeared in the opening montage of the 63rd Emmy Awards and was attendance at the screening in the MFA’s new Alfond Auditorium with his producer partner at Ten Table Films, Molly Pearson for a Q 8 A following the movie. Gay Buying Power in 2011 | Bob Witeck, CEO and co-founder of Witeck-Combs Communications based in Washington, DC, the nation's premier public relations and marketing firm specializing in reaching LGBT households and consumers talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. This year Witeck-Combs is being honored at the GLAAD Amplifier Awards with the Public Visibility Award on October 4th in NYC. We talked to Bob about what the GLAAD Award means to him and his lifelong commitment to LGBT Civil Rights. Bob Witeck and Wes Combs co-authored “Business Inside Out” considered the handbook on marketing insights, practical tips and strategies targeting the LGBT market. Over the years Witeck has talked a lot about ‘Gay Buying Power'. When asked whether passing marriage equality on the federal level would boost the US Economy, Witeck stated, “Absolutely. Marriage equality is almost a business imperative. In July I had a chance to write a blog piece for CNN which they featured on their homepage. I wanted to point out how business benefits from gay marriage. For example, the trends that we have to hire the best and brightest have always required companies to begin with what happened in New York thirty years ago which was to offer domestic partnership benefits but marriage actually just ups that ante. It just assures that equality of relationships everywhere we turn in every market, in every jurisdiction and what a business hates the most is having a hodgepodge of different relationships to address. If you were a company, a multi-state employer, for example and you have gay couples in Massachusetts and you have gay couples in Arkansas and you have gay couples in California and Illinois, in Illinois you have civil unions, marriage in Massachusetts, you have no protections in Arkansas and in California you have some measure of hybrid and some people there are even married. That kind of complexity is actually two things. It’s a problem for employers to administer. Second it also costs money to have to have complicated administration of benefits and tax structure. I think ultimately that a simplification will be a very important tool that will help employers to recruit talent which I think will help strengthen a lot of businesses and then again households that are married have stability and those are the ones that are more likely to put down roots in their communities. They’re the ones that will spend money to buy a house more often than not; that will have children more often than not in the future and to spend money the ways that every family spends money, college and vacations and you know, diapers. I think that those things we’re spending money on now but I think that what marriage equality does is it gives us the stability to make long term plans and that allows us to do it in a more thoughtful way.” Besides being honored this year by GLAAD, Witeck was named one of 20 outstanding openly gay Virginians by Equality Virginia and in 2010 was nominated for the Trailblazer Award by Out 8 Equal Workplace Advocates the national organization that champions safe and equitable workplaces for LGBT people. He and his partner Bob Connelly live in Arlington, Virginia. For More Info: witeckcombs.com Hear 90+ LGBT Leaders Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES™ | 9/21/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Baldwin Runs For US Senate | Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) discusses her candidacy for the U.S. Senate in this intimate audio conference call with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson Host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ and members of the LGBT press. The Gay 8 Lesbian Victory Fund arranged this opportunity for a dialogue with the Congresswoman. Chuck Wolfe, CEO of the Victory Fund, praised Baldwin during the conference call stating her bid for the Senate will be “An important race of our community. The Victory Fund endorsed Tammy in her first state legislative race back in 1992. She hasn’t lost a race. We hope we are able to help her continue that success rate all the way through 2012.” Besides being a fierce advocate for LGBT Civil Rights Baldwin is vowing to stand up for the middle class, “no matter how tough the odds or how powerful the special interests it means fighting against.” This is great news for the 2012 elections. Wisconsin has been going through some rough times with their antigay right wing Governor. We’ve interviewed Baldwin a number of times on OUTTAKE VOICES™ and as a champion of doing the right thing Tammy will bring a sense of sanity and confidence back to the people of Wisconsin and America. When asked how we can combat homophobia as the 2012 elections rev up and the GOP candidates continue attacking our LGBT community Baldwin stated, “To the extent that I am faced with it in my campaign I plan on responding very directly and we’re going to have campaigns unfolding across the country. But to the extent that it (homophobia) is raised in the US Senate race in Wisconsin I’m certainly not going to turn the other way.” On being openly gay Baldwin thinks Wisconsin will value her honesty stating, “I have always since the beginning in all my adult life been out and honest about my sexual orientation and I think that voters appreciate the values of honesty and expect integrity in their elected officials.” Baldwin however insists the race “won’t be about me” and instead will focus on the problems facing everyday Americans, “It will be about the middle-class, the threats that they’re facing right now, the struggles that families are experiencing and which candidate for U.S. Senate is going to be the best fighter for them.” For More Info: tammybaldwin.com Hear 90+ LGBT Leaders Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES™ | 9/15/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Comedian Jackie Monahan Chat | Comedian Jackie Monahan talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ in part 4 of our series of celebrity chats from the Provincetown International Film Festival. Jackie plays Zylar in Madeleine Olnek’s new film “Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same” an ironic mix of cult ’50s sci-fi, urban dating and interspecies romance. This hysterical film tracks the misadventures of three aliens from the planet Zots who are sent down to Earth to have their hearts broken in an attempt to rid themselves of romantic emotions which are considered toxic to their planet’s atmosphere. B. Ruby Rich, Film Quarterly said, “Dispensing with realism, melodrama and suffering, writer–director Madeleine Olnek’s ‘Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same’ makes a return to cheesy, 1950s-era science fiction: black-and-white footage, Twilight Zone sound effects and all. Olnek’s pointed jokes and sweetheart ending mark ‘Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same’ as a modern-day lesbian fairy tale.” The film was also an official selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and is currently playing the festival circuit. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights Monahan stated, “I do whatever I can for civil rights. I’m an out comic. I was told immediately by industry not to be out. That I would make so much more money (not being out), that I’m cutting my salary in less than half of what I could be making. No one knows I’m a lesbian by looking at me and my comedy does not have to be out but I made a conscious decision to be out, to be true to myself and to everyone that I love. I love being a lesbian and I’m very proud of it.” Jackie Monahan is currently appearing with veteran comedienne Vicki Shaw and rising star Gloria Bigelow in the “Curiously Strong Comedy National Tour” bringing together three of the most acclaimed female stand up comedians in the country. When she’s not on tour she can be found doing spots on Maxim’s Sirius radio and VH1 shows. She has also appeared on Logo in her television special “One Night Stand Up” and has a hit podcast “Girls on Girls” for the HERE! TV Network. Queer Nation Gay Rappers | Twin brothers Jackson and Coleman Vrana from Elephant, the punk-infused hip-hop duo based in Hollywood that we first heard about when we interviewed Josie Cotton talk with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Their controversial new music video Queer Nation takes on homophobia and is getting buzz. When asked what their inspiration was behind the song and video for Queer Nation Vrana stated, “At the time we were listening to a lot of homophobic hip-hop, which we like even though you know what it is, we still enjoy it. We kind of wanted to respond to that. So we wrote a song that I think kind of turns that type of song on its head and I think we burn a few gay stereotypes in the process. We made a video for it with Jim Zabilla the director. We shot it in a trailer truck on a parking lot. It was inspired by the whole Party Monster idea and it’s getting some really good responses so we’re really excited about it.” Vrana added about the explicit language, “We think it’s pretty important to challenge people to embrace the language and culture in general that they’re not comfortable with. We both view it as a form of social progression when you can make people challenge their own idea of language.” Their music is raw and hot with LGBT topics like Notorious H.I.V. to The Tranny Step. Jackson and Coleman Vrana are very outspoken about our LGBT issues especially our LGBTQ teens who are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. They state on their website, “To fight for your own identity is to fight for everyone’s. Our message is in our DNA. Being yourself and embracing it, owning it, may be the message of Elephant.” For More Info: elephantwave.com Hear 90+ LGBT Leaders Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES™ | 8/31/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Inside Grey Gardens & More… | Legendary filmmaker Albert Maysles talks to Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ in part three of our series of celebrity chats from the Provincetown International Film Festival. Maysles was the recipient of the Career Achievement Award at PIFF this year for his amazing documentaries including GIMME SHELTER, GREY GARDENS and SALESMAN that he created with his late brother David. When we asked what he thought about the way GREY GARDENS came back the way that it did Maysles stated, “I should have expected that it would have that kind of reaction. When the film first came out there were dozens of gay men having GREY GARDEN parties all over the country and even in England where gay men would dress up as Edie and have their parties and it’s still going on. Then of course there was the HBO feature film, the Broadway Musical and also a book that my daughter published all about GREY GARDENS with lots and lots of drawings and a CD of an hour and a half of sound of the two women talking when the camera wasn’t running.” Maysles has directed a new film called THE LOVE WE MAKE with Paul McCartney that addresses 9/11 as well as McCartney’s subsequent Concert for New York City. “There was so much suffering as a result of 9/11 it’s hard to imagine how one might bring relief to those who were impacted by the attacks and honor those firefighters, police officers and rescue workers who lost their lives in their heroic attempt to help others,” said Maysles. “But Paul had the answer: music and a film that would tell the full story.” THE LOVE WE MAKE will air on SHOWTIME September 10th where both GREY GARDENS and SALEMAN are available for viewing on SHOWTIME ON DEMAND until August 23rd. Albert Maysles is a pioneer of Direct Cinema who along with his late brother David was the first to make nonfiction feature films where the drama of life unfolds as is without scripts, sets, interviews or narration. Called "the dean of documentary filmmakers" by The New York Times, Albert has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, two Peabody Awards, three Emmy Awards, five Lifetime Achievement Awards, the Columbia Dupont Award and an Academy Award nomination for LALEE’S KIN. Eastman Kodak saluted him as one of the world's 100 finest cinematographers. For More Info: MAYSLESFILMS.com Hear 90+ LGBT Leaders Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES™ | 8/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Lesbian Site Shewired | Tracy Gilchrist, Editor in Chief of Shewired.com talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Shewired the lesbian online outlet of Here Media has recently unveiled a fresh new design by Boo Jarchow, Associate Editor of Shewired, that allows users to easily navigate their way through the hottest headlines from the world of pop culture, politics, travel, health and lifestyle. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights Gilchrist stated, “I came out in the late eighties. One of the ways that I have been committed is just through my own visibility. I’ve been out in every job that I ever had. Now that I’m kind of a professional lesbian, I think to some degree that’s helpful because it changes hearts and minds that you can work with people who are gay; we’re just kind of normal. In that sense I’ve always been myself and so that is one of my commitments to LGBT civil rights. The other one is now that I am a professional lesbian is to do my best to cover the issues that are pertinent to people in our community. To get the news out and to at least on my end make people aware of what legislation is out there that will effect their lives and who are the people we need to watch out for who are trying to take our civil rights away or just keep them from us to begin with. Also who are our heroes. I do feel it’s my duty at this point to try to put that information out in the world.” SheWired continues to offer its dynamic roster of writers who bring a unique perspective to important gay women’s issues. Fans now have quick, easy access to SheWired’s original editorial and video content. Gilchrist encourages users to engage with other members of the SheWired community in the robust social networking section of the site which allows members with a SheWired profile to interact easily through e-mail, chat, photo sharing and more. Tracy Gilchrist has acted as SheWired's Editor in Chief since its 2008 inception. Formerly, she worked as Senior Editor for Here Media's pioneering Lesbiannation.com. She has also contributed entertainment pieces to The Advocate, Advocate.com, Los Angeles Magazine and In Los Angeles. Paula Poundstone on Equality & More | Comedian Paula Poundstone talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Poundstone is a regular panelist on NPR'S hit weekly news quiz show, "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me," which won a Peabody Award for broadcasting excellence and is currently on tour with her own one-woman show. We recently caught her sold-out live performance in Provincetown. When Paula came on the comedy scene, she thought her lack of focus would be her downfall. Now it’s called spontaneity, not lack of focus. We had a chance to catch up with Paula about her show, the NPR series and LGBT issues. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Poundstone stated, “I think that I am an advocate of civil rights for all, I don’t know if it’s limited to one particular group. I am thrilled to death to see America maturing in the gay marriage arena. Although frankly, I’m not clear why anyone wants to be married but OK. I always thought that people’s argument against gay marriage has always been that it would somehow destroy the sanctity of marriage and I’m kind of a mind that whoever was in charge of the sanctity to begin with had kind of fallen asleep at the helm! I think it is exciting to live in a time when things are changing. I’m really excited when my daughter who’s in high school tells me ‘you know so and so is gay.’ I just marvel. Not because her friend is gay but that it’s casual information. It’s just when I was growing up, in high school, I was the class of ’77, of course there were many gays among my class, no one would ever have said so. Ever... So I think it’s thrilling and I try to emphasize that to my kids how lucky they are to be alive in a time when people can more or less be who they are.” Paula is headed to Alaska to record the NPR hit weekly news quiz show, “Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me”. Poundstone states “To have access to the NPR audience is pretty darn fun. They’re smart. They’re well informed. Not that I fall into either of those categories, by the way; less and less so as I grow older, in fact.” She adds her appearances on NPR actually improve her stand-up act and vice versa. Lesbian Filmmaker Speaks OUT | Nicole Conn talks about her new film “A Perfect Ending” starring Morgan Fairchild, John Heard, Barbara Niven and newcomer Jessica Clark with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Conn stated this is her best cinematic achievement in 20 years of filmmaking and audiences will be thrilled when sparks fly between Barbara Niven and Jessica Clark. When Nicole Conn released her landmark film, “Claire of the Moon” in 1992, the landscape was practically void of other lesbian-themed movies. Nearly 20 years later, a sprinkling of movies with queer themes has made it to the mainstream like Brokeback Mountain, Boys Don’t Cry, The Kids are Alright. But the field is still so small that most people can name those films off the top of their head. With this summer’s restored re-release of “Claire of the Moon”, Nicole Conn takes a look back at the film, her career and the future of women’s films. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Conn stated, “Complete and utter devotion to LGBT civil rights. I believe that we should get everything that everyone else gets. I believe in absolute equality for all human beings. I have worked with HRC on many fundraisers for my documentary “Little Man”. They sponsored the film in many places. And I continue to fight that fight and I believe in the fight for marriage equality, all equality across the board. I am not a political filmmaker and I’ve gotten some negative feedback around that. I’m really a storyteller and that’s just who I am. I’m not political in my art, I’m political in my life.” “Claire of the Moon” will be released by Peccadillo Pictures Ltd. this month along with a Nicole Conn Box Set that will include “Claire of the Moon”, “Cynara”, and “Elena Undone”. “A Perfect Ending” will be playing the festival circuit this year and into 2012. John Waters on Gay Rights & More | In part two of our series of celebrity chats from the Provincetown International Film Festival, John Waters talks to Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Waters is one of the founders of the PIFF and every year he conducts an event highlighting his movie pick of the year. John’s favorite movie of 2010 is "Domaine" a French film directed by Patric Chiha that tracks the evolution of the unusually close relationship between an alcoholic mathematician (Betty Blue’s Béatrice Dalle) and her gay teenage nephew. Their friendship is an homage to that of Albert Einstein and Kurt Gödel but with more white wine and visits to a shadowy discotheque. The result is a sexy, fresh, and poignant movie, one that gets to the underlying truths John Waters truly appreciates. We also talked to Waters about LGBT civil rights, gay marriage and LGBTQ teen bullying. LGBTQ teens are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Over the past year, numerous teens have taken their own lives after facing bullying incidents. When asked what advise he would have for these kids, Waters stated, “Bullying is going to happen even if you’re not gay. Bullying is a thing that you have to learn to deal with; it’s part of getting through life unfortunately. High school is how you learn. Wait until you get a job and you get bullied in your job. Wait until you try to get into the art world to make a film, you get bullied. So unfortunately you have to learn how to deal with bullies. You have to figure out a way to be smart enough to get around them or make them laugh. People that wanted to beat me up, I made them laugh first. Humor can be a great weapon but teachers are very wrong to allow it. When I went to high school there was no talk about bullying. They (teachers) didn’t lift a finger to stop it so that’s very wrong.” John Waters, filmmaker, actor, stand-up comedian, writer, journalist, visual artist, and art collector rose to fame in the early 1970s for his cult films like “Pink Flamingos” and “Female Trouble”. His 80’s film “Hairspray” brought him mainstream success followed by the Broadway play of the same name. His bestselling book “Role Models” is now available in paperback just in time for your summer reading. Hear 90+ LGBT Leaders Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES™ | 7/25/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Best NYC Gay Wedding Caterer | Chef Rossi, owner and executive chef of The Raging Skillet one of New York City’s best and wildest gay-owned caterers talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Now that New York has passed gay marriage and you’re seeking the perfect caterer for your wedding, check out The Raging Skillet which has been catering weddings for 23 years and has won “The Knot Best of Weddings Pick” for the last 3 years running. If there is such a thing as an anti-caterer, this company, which specializes in nontraditional parties, may be it. Every detail is personalized down to the attire of the staff (miniskirts? or kilts?) and the style of service. Chef Rossi serves dishes from several different cuisines at a single event -- she calls her firm "the wildest catering company this side of the Mason-Dixon line". Their food reflects fusions from Korea, Japan, Thailand, Cuba, South Carolina, New Orleans, Morocco, Jamaica, India, The Southwest, Vegan, Vegetarian and Rossi's mother's Hungarian Yiddish home-cooking. Chef Rossi is ecstatic to be able to cater her first legal gay weddings next month now that gay marriage has passed in her state. When asked if she thought passing gay marriage will be a financial boom for New York Chef Rossi stated, “Oh, of course, it’s going to be a windfall. Our own little Mayor Bloomberg is running around announcing he wants to turn us into the gay marriage capital of the universe. And I think it’s great. Listen, New York like everywhere else has had their problems in this economy and New York has had a rough time. And if doing the right thing and saying ‘yes’ to marriage equality makes us a booming business for gay marriage I think what a great reason. So yes I definitely think this is going to bring in tons of money.” For your special Wedding Day, The Raging Skillet offers hot and cold vegetarian poultry, meats and fish hors d'oeuvres. Enjoy three cheese quesadillas with tomatillo salsa, wild mushroom wontons with red pepper dip, Thai style chicken saté with spicy peanut sauce, roast lamb brochettes with cilantro aioli or crab and shrimp shu mai dumplings just to name a few delectable choices. Entrées include such tasties as lobster tails, Senegalese chicken Yassa breast of chicken smothered in sweet onions and green olives with Scotch bonnet peppers served over coconut scented jasmine rice, leg of lamb with pear chutney cous cous and curried baby squash and portabella mushroom au poivre in port wine and thyme with garden vegetables and crispy parsnips. The New York Times called Chef Rossi “a new breed of rebel anti-caterer” and “eclectic and off the wall” by the Zagats review. She has also been featured on “The Food Network.” As a radio personality Rossi’s hit show “Bite This” on Cape Cod’s WOMR is now in its 7th season where she shares her edible memoirs from her book entitled “The Devil and Mrs. Goldstein" which is currently seeking a publisher. Global Supergays Mission | Jenni Chang and Lisa Dazols about “Out and Around” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Their mission is to travel around the world in search of LGBT leaders and allies that are making a difference. They will be chronicling their journeys as a lesbian couple and sharing the accounts of the extraordinary individuals they meet during their “not-so-straight travels”. When asked what do they hope to accomplish with “Out 8 Around”, Jenni stated, “One of the things that we realized in the LGBT community is that we really lack role models. So we hope by highlighting these people around the world and these could be leaders in community organizing, in business, in arts, in entertainment, in health, and all aspects of society, we think that their stories will provide role models to LGBTQ youth and queer people globally. Secondly, we hope that by highlighting stories of LGBT people in all walks of life we can help decrease homophobia and just show that gay people are striving everywhere and they contribute to society in so many ways. And thirdly, we want to bring attention to LGBT issues, particularly in developing countries because in those countries there’s still a long way to go.” Lisa is fluent in Spanish and Jenni is fluent in Chinese. They’re going places where their dollar stretches far or where they have family or where people have promised a place to stay since their finances are limited. The first stop starting July 6th is New Zealand, then on to Australia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan, China, Nepal, India, Africa and South America. Jenni and Lisa have been together for two years. Jenni Chang works as a business manager for eBay Inc, the online marketplace site. Jenni’s international experience includes volunteering with community outreach groups in Taiwan, Cambodia, and China. Jenni is an LGBT activist who is involved in the Asian American and Christian LGBT communities in San Francisco. Lisa Dazols is a licensed clinical social worker who is in her tenth year in HIV services. Lisa works at UCSF’s Positive Health Program in San Francisco’s largest HIV clinic. She started her career as an international HIV social worker in Chile before getting her masters degree in social welfare at UC Berkeley.
