PixelCast 60 – Pixel James | Get ready for some James on James action in this week's PixelCast. You'll feel the sexual tension between our own James O'Connor and James Pinnell. Joining them this week is Dylan Burns and Tim Henderson. And to round out this emotionally balanced crew is our super special guest, David Rayfield. You'll know him from such publications like Destructoid and Gameranx. You'll also know him for TALKING LIKE THIS. The crew tackles the Electronic Entertainment Expo, with predictions, gripes, and rants. But before that, they spend time talking about games, and bagging on Diablo 3. They also expand on the tradition of bagging on the person who wasn't on this week's episode. Yea, I like MechWarrior. Big woop. PixelCast 59 – Point ‘n Pixel | This episode sees Tim Schafer drop in to chat about Grim Fandango, which is a fancy (and only slightly misleading) way of saying that we do have an interview with the man, but he didn't exactly swing by for tea and biscuits. Nonetheless, this episode's highlight certainly consists of the extended Grim Fandango chat that Tim (err, our Tim) recorded with Tim (the famous one) for an article in the UK's Retro Gamer magazine almost a full year ago now. Not that skeleton noir should overshadow everything else. The front end of the show brings some punch of its own, in the form of two special guests (Two! That's not only more than one, it's also more than one-and-a-half!) including Kotaku AU's Mark Serrels, as well as Lizzie dominator Tracey Lien, who could also be associated with the Australian Kotakus (and roughly seventy three thousand other places). Oh, and Jickle and Nathan join Tim, too. They even bring their potty mouths along for the outing. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 58 – Pixelectric Boogaloo | Well, I'm back and things have switched up again. Matt leads the discussion this episode, while Tim takes up back seat driving duties. We chat about Botanicula, Diablo 3 Open Beta and Trials Evolution, before we dive into sequels, remakes, reboots and rehashing IP. You might be a little surprised about how the discussion develops. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 57 – Oh, Pixel | Holidays are done with, and some regulars are back. Well, at least one regular is back – Ken's still off gallivanting on the moon (don't tell his wife, but apparently the moon's low gravity has been doing amazing things with the boobs of the women he's been gallivanting with) , leaving us without even his ghost to fill a fourth seat. So, it's all about Tim, Matt West and Jimmy P this episode. Can we call him Jimmy P? Apparently so! - clearly he's not the one who has to punch out this nonsense. Speaking of nonsense, we all take some time to assume that we know how to fix Japan this episode, assuming that Japan is indeed of fixing. And, if it is, assuming that this fix should come from three Australian gamers on a podcast. Perhaps this was an odd fortnight for it, but then, it was an odd time for many things. Tim (and, it turns out, Matt) was playing The Void... which is probably odder than Godzilla wearing pink pantihose while paying a visit to the Dogo Bathhouse. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 56 – Pixel Poke | If you have a slightly dirty mind, this episode will tickle your fancy and tingle your loins. Sex in games gets the tee-hee treatment, but we also manage to stifle the giggles for long enough to offer some interesting opinions on this rather sticky subject. Our special guest is Bajo from ABC's Good Game, although Dylan seems unaware of this for the entire show. We have spoken to him quietly and he promises to do his research next time. Also joining us is PCPowerPlay's Nathan Cocks, Pixel Hunt contributor Matt West and our magazine editor Patrick "radio voice" Lang. Whether it's enjoying the soothing melody of Bajo's phone ring tone or pausing the show in awe of Dylan's impressive hosting skills, PixelCast 56 is sure to have something for everyone! ____________________________________________________ You can listen through the player below or download the podcast directly (.mp3 file), but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 55 – Pixel Effect | A lot of not-things are not-discussed this episode, least among them a slew of-not negatives. The crew even found some time to not-play some not-games (what, Heavy Rain you say? How very not-witty of you!) since the previous show. They talk about them too, clever chaps that they are. Tim is back at the helm for number fifty-five, and it only takes moments for him to start some rather freakish speculation about absent panellists. This is made pretty clear as stalwarts Ken and Dylan are there to point it out. Big games get talked about this week and, boy, you should have seen the look on Tim's face when he realised that Mass Effect 2, and not Journey, really had to be the banner title. It was like Photoshop was stabbing him in the face. Fortunately for his sanity, he did get a good amount of spooging into the show, especially with regard to the game's unique approach to player connectedness, which happened to lead quite smoothly into the back-end topic. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 54 – Big Pixel | Well now! Not a whisper about Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Christmas Nights or the dismal DreamCast launch in Australia. The sky must be falling! Either that, or Tim's taking a rare break from PixelCasting duties, leaving Ken at the helm. Joined by Dylan, James and Matt, the crew spend far too much time heckling Tim, and continually meandering off-topic. Ken also finally gets a chance to talk about his beloved MechWarrior series in the end topic, as the crew discusses games that make you feel both big AND powerful. __________________________________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 53 – Shut Up and Take My Pixels! | Dedication, ho! You can feel the love this episode, even if our husband & wife duo decided to record in separate rooms. Apparently Jess finds it a little weird when her husband's voice lags on itself, or something like that. Whatever. Video games made everything better! What video games, I hear you ask? New and old video games, we say! Tim's been busy clearing his steam list, but Mass and Jess bring things up to speed with tales of newer 360 experiences. The soul still burns, apparently. And then there's our topic – a topical one, for a change. With Double Fine kicking arse and taking names with regard to sourcing funds from its fans, we take a moment to spend a while chatting about... well, exactly that, mostly. There's also some stuff about funding in general, and at some point Jess makes a poop joke. So, win all around, then. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 52 – Pixel Generation | Listeners beware – Tim has been playing a Sonic game that he actually (mostly) likes! In this respect, we may as well have given control of the show to a 12-year-old. Luckily, there is a supporting cast who have showed up in, erm... support. The cast in question includes Ken, Dylan, and (hopefully) new regular, Matt West. Also, there are a couple of very special appearances by the Ghost of Ken Lee. What do they talk about, you ask? Well, there's a bit about that new Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning thing (which probably should be in the title graphic, but, well... 12-year-old), some other games (Sonic!) and then spend the back end trying to make some predictions about what might happen in the coming year in gaming. It's like a podcast time-capsule that we'll be digging up when we (presumably) try this again in 2013! ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 51 – Pixel Reset | Like a Katamari that has expanded in size after an arduous battle to roll up a hill, the PixelHunt podcast has since reached the top and, with just a gentle push, is beginning the freefall tumble down the back half of the race to triple didgits. To celebrate we've... um, continued to slim down the show and... erm, sworn a bit. Take heed listeners – the swear filter is gone! Why? Honestly, largely because editing four-lettered fiends out simply takes a surprising amount of time and effort. So, keep that in mind if you're listening with kids (or parents, you rebellious teen youth, you) around. As for the show itself, what we've been playing has taken a turn to the portable with Ken's fatherly duties forcing him to spend more time with iOS titles, and Tim's winter travels around Japan ensuring that his Vita has remained pleasantly dust free. And then James wakes from a nap and joins the second half of the show. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 50 – Pixel Past Twelve | Another year, another milestone. That's just how the PixelCast rolls. Somehow, we've taken this formerly formless entity and whipped it up to a good half-century worth of numerical content. Will it continue on to a full three-digit number? We'll have to wait and see, but for now we're pushing forward with as much gaming talk as ever. This fortnight sees Tim joined by James 'Jickle' O'Connor, Sir Nathan Cocks and the lovely Lady Jessica West. Surprisingly, despite the dearth of new releases, none of the four have had any trouble in finding things to play. Actually, that's not a surprise at all – the world of today as flooded with games, to the point where we're always playing catch-up. Or, in Tim's case, playing HD remakes of old favourites and struggling to articulate the brilliance of the dis-congruity between pure, love-driven motivation and the evil deeds that this sews that Shadow of the Colossus portrays with such a deft hand, instead falling down on nonsense words such as grey. Oh, and everyone talks about their personal favourite games, too. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 49 – Happy Pixel to You | Wait... it's Christmas? Well, still a few days to go, but whatever – everything's been released and we're all fretting over our holiday plans. Recording a new podcast during this time probably didn't help there. Still, we did, and now you can download it should you need something to distract you from loud siblings. Tim, Jimmy P and a newly-wed (after only around 10, 000 years of being engaged) Dylan helm the last show before the fat man in the red suit does that whole chimney thing that he does, and they do their best to keep it fresh and focused. Well, James does what he can to keep it fresh while Tim struggles to keep it focused. Somehow, the crew did find some new games to discuss (viva la Vita!) when not getting into sidetracked arguments about smartphones, and there's a topic too. We talk about bringing out your dead and how to cook sweet potatoes. So, there's that. Oh, and mad props to that Mattvideo guy from whom we stole our re-coloured banner pic. It's pretty sweet. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 48 – Pixel Row | If you're wondering just why this latest PixelCast seems so bats**t crazy, then it may have something to do with the return appearance of ABC TV's Good Game's Bajo... or Steven, as his mother called him. It's even possible that he made out with one Nathan Cocks at some point during the recording. It's the end of the year and Ken is off making a new baby each day while Dylan experiences a Groundhog Day wedding scenario, and so Tim is also joined by James Pinnell in his attempt to get the 'cast back on track. But mostly, it just boils down to games and anecdotes. So... back on track, then. The four panel members also take it upon themselves to decide the PixelHunt Game of the Year on behalf of everyone else, a noteworthy award that we totally expect to see on the back of a certain game's case any day now. Also, we forget stuff, most notably in the 'stuff we forgot about' category. So, here's looking at you, Stacking and Shogun 2. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! StopGap 6 – TriCast | Ever wanted to hear what three people playing through the beta of Trine 2 sounds like? No? Are you sure? Because, you know, maybe you, in fact, do want to know what three people playing through the beta of Trine 2 sounds like but you just don't know it yet. It could be true. Either way, this is very much what this week's podcast sounds like. We've taken a break from the regular format in the wake of three beta keys, and so Tim is joined by Nathan Cocks and James Pinnell for a half-hour-ish romp through a land of lush visuals (complete with a failed attempt at video capture) and an absolute craptonne of p***s jokes, some of which our panel members don't even realise they're making. Yeah, it's totally crazy, man. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 47 – Got Pixel? | Oh, nuts. We got Kotaku in the PixelCast. Again! Like runny porridge in your hair, that stuff is really hard to get out. Ah, well – at least that Mark Serrels fellow is a pretty entertaining guy. And he knows his games – that's good too. Who has Mark gatecrashed on, you ask? A pretty classic panel, we say! Tim, Ken and Dylan make up the remaining numbers although, despite his family heritage, not even Tim is able to speak in a convincing Scottish accent. He does pronounce 'Kotaku' correctly, though. Or, at least, we think he did. As for the show itself? Games, games, and reviews of games. There's also a little news in there, as well as some cheesy electric guitars. This is because, as we all know, cheesy electric guitars are the best kinds of electric guitars. Well, so long as you exclude those times when they're not. PixelCast 46 – Pixel Rising | Taste that? Yeah, tacos are goood. We've added just a hint of taco to this PixelCast. Why, well – duh! Mexican foodstuffs are delish! Mind you, they can also be really unhealthy, so we have to ration our pleasures with care. Just follow it up with a fresh fruit smoothy – the kind that's padded out with bananas. All those vitamins will allow you to feel better about yourself. What is all this nonsense about, exactly? We've borrowed Steve from GameTaco, is what! He joins the crew to discuss Resistance 3, have his age made fun of, and generally get a bit weirded out by the crew of Tim, James, Jess and Dylan to the point where he probably wondered why he ever through this was a good idea. Continuing with the taco and fruit theme, there's a fair bit of apple talk this show. It really does seem they succeeded in the portable gaming arena where Nokia's taco-shaped offering failed. Can we have a *boom-tssh* for that one, please? Also, Dylan somehow breaks the laws of time and makes 'about' twenty minutes last for a full hour. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 45 – Formerly Known as Pixel | Three people are better than two! Or so we like to tell Dylan, at any rate. The PixelCast returns to having a more 'crew'-sized, erm... crew for the forty-fifth instalment of regular programming. Is it a regular show, though? That's the real question, after all. (The answer is 'yes, it is', but you should still download it anyway). What regular things can you find in this regular PixelCast? Well, aside from Tim calling Ken a geek (bask in that irony for a second – aww, yeah! A new tan!), we have discussion of games, bands that are older than we are, slices of news and a bit of talk about giddy, excitable Christmas wish-listing. You could be forgiven for thinking that we're all twelve. We're not twelve, though. Well, with the possible exception of Dylan, who is aiming to set some kind of Australian youth marriage record. The rest of us are totally more grown-up than that. Hence out amazing ability to get through a discussion of Gears 3 with only a few mentions of the word 'broner'. PixelCast 44 – Precious Pixels | A svelte offering, this one is. A mixture of a small panel and a busy schedule has resulted in not all that much more than half an hour of Tim and Ken's verbal awesomeness. Try to look at it as concentrated awesomeness, distilled into the one glorious slap to the ears. Running with the small theme, we've ignored some of the bigger releases (and pleasant surprises – here's looking at you, Driver: San Fran) of the past fortnight, and taken some time to kick it with the indies instead. Space exploration and puzzle platforming make up the main courses for the day, respectively. The small crew also takes a moment to try and figure out what the hell is going through the respective heads of those in high places within Valve and EA, and then cap things up by musing over some listener questions, cropped fresh from Twitter. Here's looking at you, little birdy. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 43 – Pixel the Machine | The summer drought is over! Or is that the winter drought? Frankly, both. For the return of the regular-format PixelCast we have roped in a total of four panelists, devided evenly between both sides of the equator. Tim and Cody represent the stinking heat of the North, while Ken and Jickle rain on their parade (hah) from Melbourne. Of course, this drought is one of games, not rain – of which there has been plenty. Actually, there have been plenty of games too – including From Dust, which earns itself a moment's fragmentation of opinions – but there's been a lack of a certain something, and by 'certain something' we mean 'Deus Ex: Human Revolution'. The focus then makes its way to Japan, wherein the crew look over the way the powerhouses of the industry have shifted grounds over the past decade or so, and wherein Cody is reminded that Nintendo once used to make competitively powerful hardware, too. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast Stopgap 5 – Deadly Pixelnition | While Tim is still setting up in his new Japanese love fortress, the PixelCast continues with another special Stopgap episode. This new episode is a landmark in the PixelCast history, being the first time people are actually IN THE SAME ROOM. I'm joined by the best crew you'll ever find: Matt West (of Armchair Diplomat), his co-conspirator and Pixel Hunt contributor, Jess West, and the effervescent Nathan Cocks (of PC Powerplay). ___________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! FineCast – Stopgap 4 | A Fine Cast, we're calling it. Some may even say that it's a doubly fine 'cast. With Tim in the middle of relocating his entire life (yes, again), the regular PixelCasting has been put back to allow for some smaller content. In this case, that content is pretty sweet. And how could it not be sweet, what with Tim Schafer and the equally charming Nathan Martz giving time to talk Sesame Street? Yes, Sesame Street – and don't you dare go pretending you're not curious to try it out. This is actually an interview that Tim did for Hyper a few issues back, but what we've got here is the full thing. You get to hear everything, from Schafer and Martz's banter, through to just how damn sleepy Tim sounded while conducting it. It's will worth a download. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 42 – A Trail of Pixels | We could probably call this the tech error cast: Ken was supposed to be on, but his Internet connection was doing indecent things to our recording equipment, guest panellist Eliot Fish found his normal mic was giving him too much of an Ocker accent, and something weird happened on Tim's end with ten minutes left to go! We got something out of it all, though. What is that something, we hear you ask? Well, that something is talk about Bastion and... um... some slightly older games. It's that kind of year see – great for Shameless Gaming in the pile, but fairly t**s if you want new and exciting things to entice listener ears with. And, by t**s, we mean eighty-year-old super saggy t**s. Or older. The panel of three scrapes through some news as well, speculating over what they want from Windows 8 over what it'll likely end up being. Then there's a topic too, which involves us mumbling about popular genres, trends and ideas in gaming that we just don't get, or at least are unable to appreciate. Also, trail mix. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 41 – Pixel Bricks | Good Game invades the PixelCast! It's all a part of the Australian government's plans to take over all local games media, and they're doing it here by covertly sending one Steven 'Bajo' O'Donnell to hyperactively chat with PC Powerplay's Nathan Cocks. The rest of us just sit back and watch in awe. OK, that's a bit of a lie. We talk, too. A bit. Tim spearheads organisational duties as usual, with Dylan and Jess dongling up his rear! Just what do we mean by dongling up his rear? Honeslty, we don't know! But we know what you think it means, you filthy-minded little Internet people! Flowing like a bee on a sugar-high through a field of exploding asteroids, a sizable chunk of the show is spent getting distracted from our various gaming escapades and our return visit to Team Fortress 2. Somehow, the crew chew through this fortnight's meagre news stories and come out of discussing games and movies and movies and games and midgets and movies and... er, other stuff too! ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 40 – King of Pixels | E3 is mercifully behind us and PC Powerplay's Nathan Cocks has swung by to join in with the rest of the crew's banter. Alongside having the best radio voice of any of us, he also has the best Duke impersonation. Heaven only knows exactly what this man does in his spare time. Alongside Cocks sits a typical crew: Tim, Ken and Dylan. Chewing their way through the format they delve into a fortnight of gaming, titter over some news stories of questionable maturity, and slip in a little anime on the side. Don't like anime? Too bad! Actually, it's just a couple of minutes, so you'll probably be fine. With Duke Nukem Forever finally out, we decide we may as well pinch our noses and leap into the murky swamp water below us. What's the worst that could happen? Correct answer: some horrible jumping puzzles and getting stuck in level geometry. Also, juvenile humour, depending on how personally you take that stuff. It was certainly strong enough to inspire us to discuss maturity at the end of the show. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 39 – Pixel Conference | In an attempt to scare off new PixelCast panellist, Brendan Keogh, we decided to record this fortnight's show on an evening that would go on to host an Australia-wide Skype crash. As such, our more regular 'casters Tim, Dylan and Jickle are a little irate by the time they enter the middle slice of the show, recording at fluctuating volumes on a program that doesn't seem to want to work. Although not strictly Microsoft's fault just yet, these technical difficulties certainly didn't help our (re: Jickle's) reaction to the company's E3 media event. Sony's follows suit and – thanks largely to persistent technical problems – we even manage to slip in a couple of thoughts on Nintendo's bloated new controller. By the time everyone has calmed down, the panel manages a decent discussion on game worlds and what it really takes to fool us into perceiving them more as real places than constructs of polygons and textures and virtual hookers to be beaten up with baseball bats. Oh, and games. We talk about them at some point, also. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 38 – Two Lonesome Pixels | As hard-working as ever, it's up to Tim and Ken to carry the show on their mighty shoulders this week. Apparently everybody else had a prior appointment with a marble tournament. For what we understand, the prize is ice cream – it seems nobody informed the guys that winter is coming, bitches. Winter is coming, but since we spoke of Game of Thrones in episode thirty-seven Tim has since freaked and thus taken a quick jump to the other side of the equator. He returned jet-lagged and with stories of tramps and their junk. Meanwhile, Ken was doing useful stuff... like playing games based on where Tim actually was. Considering our smaller-than-usual panel, we've taken a slight change-of-pace and dedicated the back-end of the show entirely to a listener Q&A. Do we answer your questions? Well, that depends – did you ask one? PixelCast 37 – Pixel Matter | Spoonerisms! What does Tim say? We can't remember! But we know he screwed something up. Something to do with an S and a C. Fortunately for you, dear listener, the remaining members of the panel – Ken, Dylan and Jickle – are far more silver of tongue. Do you need a silver tongue to speak about videogames? Probably not – but it surely can't hurt. A weird and wonderful collection of games takes the front-end post this episode, with presently import-only titles such as Mortal Kombat and Catherine doing plenty to disturb through a tag team assault of gore and sheep. We follow this with talk of HBO's new Game of Thrones adaptation and, well, those who've been watching it likely know where that conversation ends up... Feeling a need, perhaps, to walk away from all that, the main issue this episode is that of portable gaming and the changes this particular landscape is seeing. What do we want from them now? Who's on the right track? What have been out all time favourite handheld games? PixelCast 36 – Pixel Lag | A mixture of multiple international flights and a mild head cold simply can't keep a good host down. In Tim's case, however, such a cocktail can at least cause him to sound more spaced out and congealed than his already considerable levels. Good thing then that he has three other people with him to help carry the show! The panel consists of not one but – count 'em – two James', with Ken providing a solid backbone. Together, well... we've all been playing a lot of racing games, it seems. This is either a result of complete chance, or a sign of the genre we're most likely to fall back on to fill in some time while we await Portal 2's imminent arrival. And boy did Portal 2 arrive, and boy does it get discussed. We keep proceedings mostly clean from spoilers beyond the revelation that Tim is still yet to play the game. What's wrong with the man? Buggered if we know. From this we move to NEWS stories that refused to stop changing post-recording and discuss our thoughts on the FPS at the very end. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast Stopgap 3 – StarCast | Hi! We're not here right now. In fact, we're busy experiencing the wondrous thing known as a 'pint' over in London. Considering the strength of the Aussie dollar against the pound, we're very likely experiencing rather a few of them. However! Not wanting to leave you guys without an audio treat for a PixelCast 'on' week, we have gone and recorded the third StopGap episode in advance. It's a simple show, granted. The premise is a straightforward one: Tim, Ken and Cody play a round of 3v3 in the recently mega-patched StarCraft 2 and record their conversations while they play. Are they focused on the game, or do they become distracted by Ken's new moustache? Do they win or do they lose? Who knows?! PixelCast 35 – Pixelate | Kotaku Au editor, Mark Serrels, joins Tim, Ken, James and Dylan so as to infuse the 35th PixelCast with his delightful Scottish brogue. What is a brogue exactly? I'm not sure! Dictionary.com says a brogue can be any strong regional accent (although it can also be specified to the Irish). Is this correct? It probably is! Is this relevant? Not at all! What is relevant? All the games we've been playing! We're on the cusp of a new handheld generation, one of exceptional uncertainty, and Mark is kind enough to share his thoughts about his 3DS experiences thus far with us. The rest of us, what with having to wait until retail, are instead playing games on our computers and swinging the full gamut between underground indie and mega-budget AAA releases. Regular sections follow, and include Dylan geeking over painting tin soldiers, some NEWS of a higher calibre than last time (hah!) and what becomes a fairly heated discussion surrounding the hype train of the videogame world followed by a few listener questions. Thanks to the magic of editing, you can't even tell that Tim's router dropped out... although you can still hear him mistakenly referring to Machinarium as Machinima. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 34 – Age of Pixels | Fresh blood! Our mistress of the Covet Corner, Jessica West, joins more regular PixelCasters Tim, Dylan and Michael in order to divulge her love of Dragon Age and stories. Quite a lot of time ends up given over to Bioware's latest opinion-dividing RPG thing, slash action game lite, and by the end of it all none of us really know where we stand. It's an appropriately timed gaming experience, though, as our end topic manages to just scratch the surface of that elephant in the room that is known as storytelling in games. It makes for a pretty interesting discussion that maybe goes places that weren't wholly expected or properly prepared for. It certainly moves past the dominant realm of the RPG. Beyond this, we focus on other games we've been playing (violence, ho!), pretend to be art aficionados, and scrape desperately at the bottom of the bucket in search of anything resembling interesting news that involves games rather than Charlie Sheen (who does get flogged to death along the way). Also, we're fairly certain that the word p***s is spoken in this 'cast more than the others thus far combined. So there's that. P***s'. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 33 – Pixel Overload | Bulletstorm, Kirby, Marvel Vs Capcom 3, De Blob 2 and Killzone 3 – these are just some of the games that Tim, Ken and Cody don't discuss in this fortnight's PixelCast! Well, Killzone raises a mention, but not until we've moved on to the main topic of different controllers, button configurations and muscle memory. With many of the big releases relegated to the sideline, attention is instead turned to a few pieces of small fry, such as iPhone time-killers and MMO's with slightly-too-large ambition lumped upon them. Also, Tim went to a geek convention for the first time in years. We're still unsure if he really knows what to make of the experience. We do know what he makes of corporeal embodiment in gaming, though. Or, at the very least, we know that he has an opinion. That boy's pretty damn attached to his body. Strange that he doesn't own a Kinect. In fact, amid all our rabble about the way in which different controllers and button configurations and such can affect a gaming experience, it's a little odd that we failed to mention Kinect at all. We'll pay it more mind once Sesame Street comes out... ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 32 – Stacks of Pixels | Action Journalist(TM) Tracey Lien joins the largest PixelCast crew yet (Tim, Ken, Dylan and James Pinnell) for our fortnightly discussion of games, geeky things, and more games. The focus, for whatever reason, is largely set on titles that you can't walk into a store and buy, and instead moves into the age-old world of importing and the less age-old world of online distribution. Also, zombies. The main darling of the week – or, at the very least, the one we named the show after – is Double Fine's rather adorable download title, Stacking. This one seems to be resonating with our non-American panel a bit more than the Halloween-themed Costume Quest from late last year and, Ken's cynicism aside, we really think it's worth checking out. There's also a little talk of old-school anime, a mish-mash of various news topics, and talk of failstates right near the end. It turns out that games designers really have trouble thinking past death as an end-game condition, and we don't really fare much better. But that's not important at all. What is important is that we got through this little write-up here without once attempting to pimp the bit where Tracey may have mentioned lesbian sex... ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 31 – Little Big Pixel | Rotating guests this week. That's the magic of pre-recorded internet radio – we can stop half way through, get drunk, and then come back after recovering only to find that while James Pinell was filling the special guest seat when we started, Nathan Cocks sneakily steeped over his hungover body and blessed us with his radio-friendly vocals for the later end of the show. It is possible that we may have abused release (and, erm, other format re-release) schedules to work for our convenience for the second half of our games of the decade discussion. But, really, we're pleased to have given attention to a game that deserves it, although if you really must have a proper game for 2006 then, well... Okami. There. It's done. The debate rattles on for a great deal of time, and the result is what will likely be the longest PixelCast ever put to air. Frankly, we intend to allow it to keep this benchmark – ninety minutes is a lot of time to ask, but we hope you'll find it worthwhile. Prior to this, we have standard game talk which includes James sharing a little about Pier Solar – an all new Mega Drive (!) game released in a joined cartridge/Mega CD combo in highly limited numbers. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 30 – Pixel Pixel Pixel | Hello, Telstra? Yeah, the internet broke again. What's that you say; it works you say? Nope, I'm pretty sure it's still broke. Well, yes, well... screw you too. You realise there are now countries where your current standard of service would be a borderline violation of my human rights? Yeah, well... yes, at least my phone is working. Yes, I'm sure it will make for quality radio *sigh* This week, Tim gets to sound like he's phoning it in. Why? Well, because his ping jumped so high that it was actually shot down by the air-force after failing to provide air clearance, so he literally is. In a way, it does provide a bit of a talkback radio vibe, although conventional formats would usually have the listeners on the phone, rather than the host. A small shame, really, as Ken, Dylan, and the flood-braving James Pinnell join forces to help pump out what is an otherwise truly epic PixelCast. Usual talk of games, news, and messed-up Yakuza daughters is followed by a debate over the best games spanning 2001 through 2005. What titles came out on top? Some retrospective game of the year awards are, it seems, easier to guess than others. PixelCast 29 – New Pixel Resolution | A very front-heavy podcast this week, with Tim struggling to make peace with Mass Effect 2's popularity. Accompanied by Ken and Michael, he spends a lot of time speaking of the game, and the team then spend almost as much time speaking of something far more obscure... but equally interesting? Themes of information conveyance, visual presentation and choice run amok this episode. They got so out of hand that one full segment of the show had to be cut in the name of a coffee break, but the smouldering remains that have come from the fire are those of one of the most intense gaming discussions we've had to date. Not that the show ends at the half-way mark, though. Christmas holidays are now behind us and the world has cracked free the yoke of gaming news and, alongside everyone else on the interwebs, we follow this with reflections on the year just gone and the one that is to come. What was Ken's favourite game of 2010? What is Michael most looking forward to in 2011? Should Tim take a job as a call-centre psychic? PixelCast 28 – Pixelbells | Former Hyper editor and current senior producer on ABC TV's Good Game, Eliot Fish, joins the PixelHunt crew just in time to share some Christmas merriment before he's robbed of his adult dignity and dragged kicking and screaming to a family Christmas dinner. Similar stories may or may not be true of Tim and Dylan. It is a three man show this week, and Eliot was given the most comfortable of the chairs. We figured it fair enough, really, as we made him dress as Santa for the recording just so as to create a little extra rustic glow for his tales of what it was like to indulge gaming goodness on a Christmas before even the humble NES rolled around. We also take a little time to speak of some other games, most of them considerably more modern in spite of Tim's determination to wind the clock backwards – he's at the Saturn now, and we've gotten word that he may have located an old-school Gameboy during a house clean-up operation. There's also a restrained amount of World of Warcraft, some mixed feelings towards Tron: Legacy, and digressions into the game-scape of 1993. Merry Christmas all – we'll be back in 2011. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 27 – Eyes on Pixel | A new site deserves a new PixelCast, and that's exactly what we're delivering. It's completely free, too. Did you know that? That fact that pretty much every podcast in existence is free shouldn't hinder the ceremony around that fact. Nor should the fact that the PixelHunt ezine is free, also. Our podcast is free, too, dammit! You should take advantage of such a bargain and download it. The old team is reunited this week, and so it's up to Tim, Ken, and Dylan to fill an hour of your jogging time with talk of games, Ghibli splurgings, NEWS, and how our favourite (and, sometimes, not-so-favourite) games get us sucked in right from the moment we turn the power on. Here's a show spoiler: we end up talking about Half-Life. Other, less easily anticipated games get spoken of, also, and Dylan takes a moment regret a recent television purchase while Tim sits patiently with ice on his knee. A word of warning folks: real world sports are dangerous things, their courts and stadiums places where lithe games writers can (and will) be hurt by much bigger people. We advise playing NBA Jam instead, for the sake of your own health and safety. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast Episode 26 – Pixel-ling | After what may be the most epic podcasting recording in the history of... podcasting – one that spanned at least one failed recording, and then a couple of days after that as Australian Internet connections were waged war upon – we've come through alive to deliver a new PixelCast. Hopefully you'll like it so much you'll want to adopt it and take it home. We've got competitions! We've got cheesy-as-all-sin Disney music! We've got talk about videogames! In fact, the twenty-sixth Pixel Hunt podcast offers its listeners just about everything other than a chance to get freaky with Scarlett Johansson. We are aware that this is a significant omission, however, and will be working to fix it as we plough into 2011. We do have a fantasy time machine, though, and Cody wants to use it to... play more StarCraft, basically. Tim and Dylan can only stand by in bemusement. Almost in apology, a chance at a free copy of NyxQuest is offered to someone whose willing to get their Jingle Bells on with our theme tune. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 25 – A Life of Pixels | We're back on track! The fortnightly PixelCast can rightly be called fortnightly again. This recording session contained a lot of nonsense about how the cheesecakes that you can buy from Michelle's Partisary are really disappointing. Fortunately, this was cut from the final edit in favour of games discussion. This episode sees the return of one very talkative (and very charming) James Pinnell to the guest's chair, with Tim, Ken, and Cody filling the regular, slightly more wooden and less cushion-y seats reserved for the PixelHunt regulars. He says it was a hell of a lot more comfortable than any of the chairs in Fallout: New Vegas, of which he's clearly been playing a lot. Alongside this, we discuss the games we've been playing, the pleasure of rummaging for old classics, and spend quite a while talking about just how it is we best enjoy a gaming experience, and what it is that has made our fonder memories what they are. It might have gone on forever had Cody now gone pale and begun to sweat from StarCraft withdrawl. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 24 – Pixel Two | After a delay with – sadly – no BorderCast to compensate, and an invasion by a (proclaimed) hacker from Turkey, the PixelCast returns with a vengeance! Well, with as much of a vengeance as a pre-recorded radio show can have. Witch may be some, or it may be none at all. We're not really sure. It's pretty good, though. Resident in Australia for the first time in a little over four years, it doesn't take Tim long to verbally begin missing the Internet connection speeds that he was spoiled with in Korea. Mercifully, things move on quickly, and his co-hosts, Ken and Cody, take over with talk of games, fantasy fiction, and RPG preferences. The RPG debate rages on for a while, and although we somehow neglected to mention that, while we can forgive them in older titles, anyone who decides that mandatory random battles are a good idea for modern games can be slowly eaten alive by red ants for all we care. Also, Tim has some thoughts about Mass Effect that surprise no-one. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 23 – Happy Pixel to You | Hard to believe it's already been a year – but the PixelCast reset is certainly going stronger the the initial, limp beginning. Hell, we almost managed to get it fortnightly! More technical difficulties (re: exploding computers) notwithstanding, we may just even make it happen as regularly as we'd all like in the year to come. Tim's moving away from Korea, and has been feeling overwhelmed by tho whole cleaning and packing up the house thing, something that he felt fit to inform the rest of the panel – Dylan, James, and Cody – of numerous times. He's also been playing Dirt, proving that his stint with StarCraft 2 was an oddity for a man who's typically playing catchup. The main focus is on Mafia 2, however, and on PC gaming in general. We take some time to consider how things have changed, what people want, and what could attract them/drive them away. James, clearly, needs more than a highly-polished RTS to grab his attention, whereas Cody has trouble thinking about anything else. And that includes naked women! ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 22 – PixelCraft | Blizzard invades the imaginary PixelHunt offices this week, and we frankly had trouble finding the time to play anything that wasn't StarCraft. It resulted in a decent amount of talk that made up for the lack of anything much else, and flickered back around again when Tim, Ken, and Michael reflected on the year that has already been and looked out towards what is yet to come. Did you know that Dylan claimed to be to sick to be in this recording? Did you know that, right towards the end all of our Steam accounts popped up a message to inform us that he was instead checking out the Mafia 2 demo? We'd call him a little bitch, but we kind of admire his cunning. While a sizable chunk of the show is dedicated to the RTS game that seems to be enthralling even non-RTS gamers, we still managed to find time to give a little love to Ron Gilbert's Death Spank, as well as the rather great film, Inception. There's also a lot of retrospective love for Red Dead, and a little speculation on the side. Tim spent bloody hours editing this show together too, so please click the download link to share your appreciation. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 21 – Pixelstain | After much delay, and possibly a little confusion, Tim, Dylan, and Ken are joined by Eegra's Dan Staines for the twenty-first PixelCast. It was a tight recording that came as close as we've ever gotten to landing squarely on a one-hour show, but was the quality of talk up to the same level? You'll have to click through to find out! Well, OK – so you didn't need to click through. The audio player works just fine on the main page. But, you know, it's nice to check out the show notes once in a while. We even put links at the bottom, and you should totally check them out. Well, most of them. There's a picture from Tim's weekend away that I best left alone by anyone who wishes to maintain their innocence. With regard to the show itself, it's the usual talk of games and news, followed up by a discussion about morality systems in gaming. This is something of an expert field for out guest, and some fantastic examples are raised as a result. Also, if you listen enough times, Total Gamer will come to life. Of course, this is a blatant lie, but at least you can feel like you're trying to do something about it... ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 20 – Pixel to Pixel | Hackers may have attacked our site twice, but they've been unable to reach us on Skype. Therefore, the PixelCast powers ahead into lands unforeseen. We have no idea as to what these lands are, mind, but it went there nonetheless. We're sure of it. It sent us a post card before it came back. Dylan proves himself to be the king of giving up just before completing a game this episode, which Ken manages multiple play-throughs of the very same title. Tim managed one, and then switched his brain off so he could drink beer and watch the replays of Germany kicking the crap out of Argentina. This was before the Spain game, mind, but even if it wasn't, he would still be re-visiting past glories. All of which would be perfectly fine, if he has a single drop of German blood in him. Going to Games Con once doesn't really count. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 19 – Three Little Pixels | Welcome to the bandwagon episode of the PixelCast, where we spend most of our time talking about E3 and the World Cup. We recorded before Kewell got his red card, though, to say nothing of New Zealand taking Italy to town (with an, erm... draw), but at least E3 was over. So, you know, we're not entirely embarrassed by being behind topical stuff. It's said a lot, but Tim literally fell out of bed and went straight into recording this episode. This wouldn't be so bad were it not for the fact that it was already post-1pm at this point. We don't know exactly what he got up to the night prior, but whatever it was it has caused him to speak with a speed and hyperkinetic attitude that could put Quentin Tarantino to shame. Fortunately, there was a panel of three others to back him up. Michael, Dylan, and Ken keep the show in check and make sure that things remain (mostly) focused on gaming. Lots of gaming. Apparently we all love Nintendo again. Go figure. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 18 – Pixelsucker | The PixelHunt team set a new standard in profanity, as pixels are spoken of being sucked left, right, and center. Games also find there way in, of course and... dammit! The Lakers just got one up over the Celtics (edit: LA ended up losing, so Tim's happy again). Click on through for the audio treat. Red Dead Redemption has invaded the world, and Dylan has become convinced that he's a cowboy. Ken, on the other hand, really is a cowboy. He even owns his own saloon. It's crazy. He's even hired a piano guy and some dancing girls in feather boas. Tim, meanwhile, gets more caught up with a talking dog and rabbit, and comes clean with the admission that he was terrified of the sci-fi comedy spoof, Space Quest. Living in the past? Maybe – there's certainly plenty of talk of emotional response, and no lack of behind-the-curtain nostalgia. Also, we answer some of your questions, and somehow keep from going too greatly over time. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 16 – Time to Pixel | Tim returns just in time to pester Ken about his console collection. Or lack there of. That thing's really a total @*#$ing mystery. Want to know how it all ties itself together? Then just click the link and get downloading! We have the usual panel of Tim, Ken, and Dylan this week for our discussion of games, so-called '4D' cinema, inappropriate iPad use (edited from the actual show, because we're closet prudes) and how it was that we got ourselves sucked into a world of gaming and never really came back. It turns out that nobody present is particularly remorseful of this, however, and so the topic quickly turns to how we've tried to rope in those around us. Or how we may have done so by accident. A happy, glorious accident involving gardens that are oddly adept at fighting off hordes of the undead. Ken wouldn't be complaining if not for the extra hours he's been forced to keep the front lawn in shape as a result of his wife's paranoia. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes! PixelCast 15 – God of Pixels | Want to know how hard it is to host a podcast when you're still recovering from the previous night's drinking? Pretty damn hard, that's how hard! It would have been the Tim and Ken show this week, if not for the appearance of one of Tim's former work colleagues from the year past, who joins us in our discussion of games, acting, and retail. It's a pretty scatterbrain episode, but hopefully no less entertaining as a result. Tim spent all his off-air time moaning about how Koreans are drinking the wrong beer (Cass, a beer that is said to be 'rubbish', as opposed to Hite, which is 'actually pretty good'), and the nonsense bleeds into the show a bit. Meanwhile, Ken is busy being smitten by our mysterious guest. ____________________________________________________ You can listen and download the podcast directly (.mp3 file) through the player below, but please also subscribe to the Cast on iTunes!
