Delusional Democrats, scrambling Republicans - Dec 02,2011 | Last nights podcast with Keith Boyea and myself focused on the increasing obvious corruption and erosion of civil rights, as typified by Obama and Democratic congress members not loudly and strongly opposing Sen. McCain’s noxious attempt to allow the military to indefinitely detain citizens. Aren’t Democrats supposed to champion civil liberties? If George Bush acted this the liberal blogosphere would be screaming. But apparently shredding of rights is ok if a Democrat is in power. I explained how this got taken to almost comical extremes when Crooks and Liars attacked Naomi Wolf‘s saying DHS (and by implication Obama) was behind the obviously concerted crackdown on OWS, that this was not only horribly wrong but that Wolf (oh the horror) “intentionally tried to stir the fires of anger and discontent and anti-government sentiment on an international level,” as if something was wrong with that. WTF? This shows how tepid liberal protest can be and how locked into the Democratic Party it is. Keith pondered the Republican race with its ever-changing array of candidates who pop up only to self-destruct. We both agreed Gingrich is a pompus gasbag with Keith thinking Republicans will start to line up behind Romney soon. | 12/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Report from Occupy Wall Street - Nov 18,2011 | Talking with David Buccola, who was there all day yesterday for the massive Shutdown Wall Street protests. Police craziness. Shutting down Zuccotti one day then kettling people in the next. But then tens of thousands came. This was far too manyy for them to control. The "99%" and other slogansprojected on the Verizon Building as marchers crossed the Brooklyn Bridge was inspirational, made even more so by it coming from an apartment in the projects. When the mom in the apartment saw what was being projec ted, she refused to take the agreed upon payment, saying this was for the people! At one point 30,000 were watching live streaming from theother99 on Ustream who had over 700,000 unique views. This shows the power of social media. he said cops backed off from him when they saw the live streaming. Most important, this movement is everywhere now. Support it in your community or start one of your own. | 11/18/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Occupy Wall Street report from Zuccotti Park - Nov 11,2011 | David Buccola spoke eloquently about Occupy Wall Street while standing in the rain at Zuccotti Park. He says this is what weve been waiting for, a viral mass movement with no leaders. OWS is still growing in NYC, with a really big protest planned for Nov. 17. On Tuesday night, several got arrested for nonviolent civil disobedience at Occupy Sothebys in solidarity with locked-out Teamsters. In another event, OWS learned of a tenement in Harlem owned by a slumlord. It had a broken boiler. He refused to fix it. They occupied the building until the boiler was repaired. Homeless people are joining in, and sometimes getting off drugs and alcohol too. On Wednesday night, two people were arrested for dancing on the sidewalk (?). Last night, dozens danced on the sidewalks and streets as large contingents of police followed them. If you want to do something at OWS, just do it. Thats the message. And it really is run by genuine principles of democracy. We talked about OWS for 45 minutes. Give a listen. This is from someone who is there and participating in it. After David went to dry off, Keith and I concluded with discussion about the insanity of bombing Iran, penn State protecting the institution at all costs, and the continuing tragi-comedy in the Eurozone. | 11/10/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Scotland elections, Pakistan, Republican debate - May 13,2011 | We had a lively, wide-ranging show. Steve Hynd, who is Scottish, details the hows and whys of the huge win by the populist Scottish National Party last week when they won a majority in parliament. The SNP describes itself as center-left, which by US standards would be considered far left. They favor no fees at universities and have already instituted free prescriptions for drugs. Scotland has huge mostly untapped wind, wave, and tidal power and could easily support itself should it vote for independence, something the SNP plans on bringing to referendum within five years. The SNP, who have been around for decades, won because they a) never gave up, b) clearly stand for something. This is how to win in America too. The Republican debate was characterized by a surprising amount of antiwar and anti-drug war views. Ron Paul has always championed such views. Its unclear whether some of the rest believe this too or are just mouthing such views to make Obama look bad (just like how the anti-war movement was mostly anti-Bush.) Will bin Ladens assassination boost Indias stature in the region? Theyve already started making overtures to Afghanistan with offers of funding, perhaps to combat their proxy war against China in Pakistan. The US isnt particularly relevant. Fractures on the Left over Obama - Apr 15,2011 | The DFHs, as well as many liberals and progressive, miss this, thinking Obama somehow is one of them, and is just misguided or has bad advisors. Government shutdown, 2012 elections - Apr 08,2011 | Dave Anderson of Newshoggers was our guest this week. Topics included: Will the shutdown happen? Hard right Republicans want to defund EPA and PLanned Parenthood, so this is hardly just about the budget. But Democrats as usual do little to fight back or to present a competing platform. Obama could win by default in 2012 if Republicans nominate a loony. Pawlenty could be their compromise candidate, but hes colorless. Josh says Michele Bachmann is not nearly as crazy as she appears and in fact ripped a Democratic opponent to shreds during a debate. With testimony in Congress about how peak oil is coming, moving to renewable energy becomes more important. Our era of cheap oil has passedand will never return. The EU already has a coherent plan for going to renewable energy on a mass scale, something the US lacks. Derrick Crowe interview. Libya - Mar 25,2011 | Derrick Crowe is a Political Director at Brave New Foundation. He is also a five-year veteran of Capitol Hill and a trained “Creating a Culture of Peace” nonviolence facilitator. Some highlights. We all agreed the extremely fast onset of the bombing was highly suspicious. The rebels had barely started fighting when they started calling for a no-fly zone. They broke into storehouses, stole munitions, and turned what was a nonviolent uprising into a violent one. Its almost like they were expecting military help would be arriving quickly. Derrick thought the rebels made a huge strategic blunder by going to violence. They picked a fight before they were ready and moved to violence way too fast. They should have stuck with nonviolence, and used the ensuing government repression against the regime. But by picking up arms, they allowed Qadaffi to use his. There are 1,000 rebels who have military training. The government has 120,000 soldiers. As Saul Alinksy said about the Black Panthers in the later 1960s, it is sheer idiocy to say all power grows out of the barrel of a gun when the other side has all the guns. The supposed allies in NATO are already squabbling about what the resolution permits them to do. What was supposed to be a quick little war to establish humanitarian intervention as a basic principle (and to restore their own tarnished reputations as well) has now turned into an apparent quagmire. Congress has to approve the increased spending for this when they return next week. Derrick advises for everyone to email their representatives in House now voicing opposition to the wars and to stress that we are already in two expensive, pointless wars and can scarely afford another one. Polizeros Radio. Libya and the underpants gnomes. Bahrain, Japan, Petreaus - Mar 18,2011 | The Libya 'no-fly zone' is a full-scale attack from the air. But this is akin to the South Park underpants gnomes whose business plan was 1) collect underpants, 2) something happens, 3) make money. The invasion of Libya is 1) bomb Qadaffi, 2) something happens, 3) peace and democracy occurs. But that step 2 gonna be a bitch... . Qadaffi has said he will attack civilians and outside targets if invaded. He has scuds and gas. Will he use them? . Hardly anyone inside the Beltway is protesting as Saudi forces are used in Bahrain with a greenlight from our government, even as they murder peaceful civilians. The major US naval base there is unquestionably the reason why. But Iran is making noises about how they will not allow Shiites to brutalized there. . Petraeus testified that everything was going just fine in Afghanistan. Most ignored him and even fewer believed him. He sounds like the Japan government issuing perky statements about how things at Fukushima are nearly under control. . Japan needs lots of new power, and fast. How will they do it? Long-term, we need smart grids and energy storage. Coal, natural gas, and nuclear all have major drawbacks. Polizeros Radio. No fly zone? 2012 elections, and more - Mar 04,2011 | What are the ramifications of a no fly zone? What happens if they shoot back? Because they will. And why does the Afghanistan War continue when the public clearly opposes it? In the 2012 elections, the challenges from the right will be stronger than from the left. The Tea Party is furious at betrayals by those they helped elect. Can any Republican beat Obama? The potential candidates and challengers on both sides are decidedly uninspired. In the coming weeks we'll talk about regulatory capture and control fraud, about how a tiny few can take control of a company or country and loot it by gutting oversight and getting the accounting rules changed. Endless wars, uninspired candidates, massive theft at the top. These are all synmptoms of the same disease. A entrenched minority at the top that ignores what the public wants. Can this be a model for other states? Egypt is erupting. Will the protests succeed in toppling the government? While the protests are anti-government, the underlying cause may well be rising food prices and water shortages. These protests have spread their message via SMS and Twitter.
