Great Concept, But Poor Execution
I'm a big fan of Slate, a big fan of poetry, and a big fan of podcasting, so this new podcast from Slate was clearly targeted directly at me and I subscribed with pleasure. Unfortunately, the first 4 podcasts are a mixed bag, not due to the quality of the poems themselves or the quality of the readers' performances, but solely because of the poor sound quality. Only the first poem, "Spring Comes to Ohio" is clear and easy to hear. The other other three all appear to have been read over the phone, with the reader at the bottom of a very deep well. Come on, Slate, I know you can do better!
Poor production values
I love poetry, and I love Slate's other podcasts, but the audio quality in this podcast is intolerable. It sounds like the readers are underwater and zonked out on bendryl as they speak into a mike that is encased in a large stuffed rabbit. Also, the podcasts would benefit from an introduction (even one sentence would help, e.g., "this poem, entitled 'my masterpiece', was written by so-and-so in 1977" or whatever). Perhaps there is such a sentence at the conclusion, but quite honestly, I wouldn't know because I could never stand to listen through an entire podcast. I'm very disappointed.
what's with the poor audio quality?
This podcast would be good if they had an editor (similar to NPR's Second Stage) to introduce the poem, and give a little heads up about what to listen for, etc. I really like Slate, Poetry, and Podcasts so if they spruce it up a bit, I would be really interested in becoming a regular listener.
