ExplicitEpisode 84 - Cologne | It's time to tackle the next Toei machine. We are joined by Dominic of the AniManga Podcast to talk about HeartCatch Pretty Cure. Having just done a Sailor Moon episode, it would make sense to talk about the series which you can say is taking the helm of the magical girl genre. ExplicitEpisode 83 - Luna | The year is not over yet. After some time and a computer crash, we can finally release a new episode of the Ass Backwards Anime Podcast. If you were following the Twitter account, you may have seen spamming of Sailor Moon some time ago. This episode is the result of all that. I thought it would have been interesting to do something like a live commentary of us watching Sailor Moon. I was luckily not crazy enough to record every single second of it because it would have just been us staring at the screen while you hear the show in the background. I did end up getting 7 hours of audio that I painstakingly lowered to less than 3 hours. I hope you enjoy my slow decent into madness. ExplicitEpisode 81 - Grougaloragran | Now that we don’t have to worry about hurricanes (for now), we can now talk about anime, kinda. This was something that the people on this episode had requested to do for some time now. We are going to be talking about the French MMO turned cartoon, Wakfu. I thought this show would be a great way to kick off the theme for the 80s. Since we don’t usually have a set plan for what we want to talk about (and clearly it shows), I thought it would be kinda cool to have an overall theme this run of episodes. ExplicitEpisode 79.5 - The Prisoner | Here is the continuation of the previous episode. This time we are talking about our thoughts of the spring anime season for 2011. I don’t know why I decided to break this up into two episode. Oh well. (4:53 - 12:57) Review (Spring 2011 Anime) Here is the list we used. I want to mention something while I am here. News broke out not long ago that there is going to be a new Gundam series. Obviously, I was excited to hear the news but then recently one more important factor, Level-5 will be in charge of making this series. My body was not ready for that news. Scans have surfaced showing the character and mecha designs of the series now being called Gundam AGE. The actual concept for the series is actually very interesting. The story is suppose to be told through the prospective of the main character, his son and his descendant where they are fighting some sort of unknown enemy to save the Earth in a “One Hundred Year War.” The titular mobile suit is meant to be passed down through the generation as it slowly evolves. I am all in. The general reaction of the series seems to be very negative. Trust me, Gundam fans are crazy and this was to be expected. Just looking at the character designs was enough to send people shouting from the mountain tops saying this will be end of Gundam. Aside from that, Level-5, besides being the people who make the Professor Layton games, is fairly unknown to the general public. I blame all of this due to no one watching Inazuma Eleven. As I am typing this, I am slowly marathoning through the entire show, which is 127 episodes. As we stress in this episode, this show never stops being ridiculous. Here is just a taste of the show. I want to stress that this the least ridiculous thing you will see in this show. Yes, that just happened. The most shocking thing that came out of that match was that the girl that froze time is actually a boy. Now, let’s see what happens when Level-5 does a show about robots. As most of our listeners know, we are an interesting set of characters with a variety of interests. With this show being an open forum to express our interests, time and again, we tend to reference certain shows as our respective favorites. We have gotten enough feedback that requests us to bring more discussion on those shows and, if possible, talk about them more exclusively. I had intended this podcast mainly as a catch all show. So the idea about talking one specific show exclusively is a bit outside my comfort zone. That being said, I will try my hardest to make this work. I think that is enough buildup, right? For the people who actually read the notes on the site before or during listening to the episode, I am proud to announce that we are starting up a new podcast, twice actually. The question now becomes, what will become of the SSAA Podcast? This simple answer: Nothing will change. We will bring you same show we always have, maybe with me sounding a bit more tired as we go along. I don’t want the show to be hindered just because we are starting more shows. We already did our Gintama and Detective Conan episode already, so we don’t need to talk about it again on the main show. The most you will hear is us mentioning new episodes of those podcasts. As of the day I released this episode, we have not finalized the release schedule, a web site, or even names for these podcasts. This why we are going to be taking a few weeks off to sort everything out. Do not think of this as us podfading. It took a little time to originally start this show. You see now why our product has such an appropriate title. I made a decision ahead of time to not become like the already loud noise that is the common anime podcast. Regardless of quality, having the very segmented, slightly scripted, overly produced, info dumping, check marking show gets tiresome. That is not to say that you have to be a “random” kind of show. There has to be a method to your madness, which is what our two years of podcasting has proven. We love to admit our laziness publicly, but we make sure that they are aware that we are but a sleeping dragon. I may only contribute to this site by writing minimal notes for the episodes, but can I actually write a more in depth look at certain anime? Maybe. Even though Old Man Soul Bro ribbed on us how hard games were back in the day, he has a point. Mega Man is actually not a hard series. What it does is that it forces you to think and not make the same stupid mistakes. I remember as a kid renting Mega Man 2 and having the hardest time to try to complete that game. Dr. Wily was not even on my radar. To me, the final boss was Quick Man or at least his stage was. After a few days, I would have to march to that accursed Blockbuster to return that game. I would then hand it to clerk, defeated. Also, some money for late fees since I ended up playing it longer to try to finish it. I would not have my revenge until later on in life. As a kid, Blockbuster actually was the source for all of my game especially for the first three X series. This was during the time where I had no access to the Internet and any news about new games came to me through television commercials. The most that I remembered was that there were games related to a fire hydrant yelling the word “SEGA!” I would later end up going to my local Blockbuster to try to this game but I ended up discovering Mega Man X. I was hooked. I ran to my parents and said, “We are keeping this.” I still have my copy to this day. I actually owed X2 but after moving seven times, I ended up losing my copy. Oh the depression that followed. X3 was the secret rare of the series. I only saw it on the store shelf once. Once. Played it, returned it, and never saw it again. Then, I discovered the Internet. You can guess the rest. I was being dead serious about Mega Man 5 for the Game Boy. I still have the passwords to this and every Mega Man game I ever played on several sheets of construction paper. That was the first Mega Man game I ever completed. It still holds a special place in my heart. By the way, that cat was completely useless. All it did was spin around like a drunken Sonic. I think it would be best for it to be a separate blog post that I can mess around with the meaning behind certain openings and endings of anime. I’m sure it will require a lot of links. (40:02 - 48:33) Discussion (Hajime no Ippo) When we did our report on Anime Festival Orlando, we mentioned going to an Ippo panel. If you didn’t listen to our rambling, we mentioned how well it was done and how they did a great job at showing clips of the anime, but still giving fair warning about how they are spoilers for the series. This is one of those occasions. The clip below is essentially the end of the first series of the anime and is a big part of what happens in the manga. However, it is said to be single greatest example of everything that makes Ippo one of the best series that you should read or watch. After watching this clip, I was convinced that I should at least start watching the anime. If you do not mind being spoiled, rev up the jet engine and start counting the hits. ExplicitEpisode 57.4 - The Spring 2010 Anime First Impression Episode Featuring Funkatron | OK. Since the actual discussion in this episode is not that important, I am mainly using this as a medium to announce that we are officially going to Anime Expo. The fact that this is the worst kept secret is not really the point of me announcing it here. We recorded this some time ago and we really had no idea the cost of how we are going to get some of the cast over there to Los Angeles. Foxy is demanding that I ask the audience to donate what you can to cover her cost to get over there. It turns out that the giant turtle that she lives on is slowly sinking and we need the funds to develop a vehicle for her to use to travel around the oil spill and get to the con. I seem to pick the worst times to tell people not to donate to our podcast. Consider the donate button as a "Help Foxy Not Die" button. Anyway, we, or likely just me, are going to be attending as regular guests of the con. I checked the analytics and can tell that our one listener has been checking our site in a lot of cities in California. I am sure that the guys from the One Piece Podcast might be around too if that gives you an excuse to see us. (29:56 - 34:25) Discussion (The Ultimate Narrator) Though I didn't get a chance to say it, Crispin Freeman does a good job as Kyon. Yes, I have a bit of a bias towards the Japanese actor. Not that I didn't mind the dub, but I guess I just wasn't expecting to hear his voice when I saw it. Haruhi was hit or miss with me. Try it out for yourself. (34:26 - 40:39) Discussion (She Rocked My Socks) I have managed to get a few of Hirano Aya albums and most of them have a good sound. Here is an interesting example of her singing. Yeah, her range is pretty amazing. Here is a bit of normal voice with a interesting surprise. This is her recent single, Speed Star. There is a lot of running. (40:40 - 43:50) Discussion (Season Two...Again) I can't really say much else about this season. Obviously, the elephant in the room is the whole Endless Eight debacle. I think all the talking points have been said and plenty of videos of people complaining about it. I hate having all the negative vibe on the show so I would rather not discuss it. Someone decided to use their time to make it easier on everyone who wants to watch those episodes. This is only part one. I am sure you can find the rest by yourselves. (43:51 - 1:17:16) Discussion (The Story) This is the biggest segment of the episode. I know I should have brought this up earlier. I didn't really expect to have the topic go all over the place on this episode. My plan was to have this as straight forward and organized as possible. I am sure I could rearrange it make it flow well, but that it is not worth the trouble. I don't think I have as much time to do crazy stuff for my episodes. Maybe in the future I will start experimenting a lot more. For now, you are going to have to deal with what we give you. ExplicitEpisode 54 - The Episode 8 Ultimate Episode Featuring Sketch | Consider this the first episode of a new wave of mecha related episodes. For the one person who listened to our old episodes, you may remember episode eight. That was the beginning that would lead into the more Skype centered format that most of you are now used to. We no longer had a proper place to record so we experimented in different places. We picked the wrong place on that one. Also, we no longer had the backbone of our show available to us to provide a proper subject for the episode. We picked the wrong one. We literally thought up the idea of doing a mecha episode the second we started recording. As usual, we were all over the place. To make for it, I decided to take a page from Madhouse and just remake the episode into something better. I bring over Sketch of Too-many-things-to-name fame and we talk about three mecha shows. We lightly jog though Godannar, pick up the pace with GaoGaiGar, and end with a full run through Gurren Lagann. I cut out most of the yelling so it ended being less than three hours. I am sure you are going to end up hearing it more times in the future. I am not going to lie to you; this was recorded a few months ago. Sadly, First Gundam and Zeta have been taken down from Crunchyroll for a while now. Wing is still on there so maybe I will finally finish it now. (9:13 - 27:28) Review (Shinkon Gattai Godannar) It was really hard to put my love of this show into words. I think it is safe to say that this show may not work with everyone. The initial hurdle is the fanservice this show has. Why this show works so well is that they play it so seriously. There might be boobs exploding out of someone's clothes and no one acknowledges it. Not to say that it is not deliberate, but the attitude of being such a tongue-and-cheek show speaks volumes. With the recent trend of moe centered shows, if they take a similar approach, I am sure they can make another winner. No, Strike Witches does not count. I would like to take a moment about a subject that was overlooked in this section of the episode. That being: The best running gag of the entire show. There is character by the name of Tetsuya Kouji. For those who don't know, he is an obvious parody of most hot blooded robot pilots. He even shares the name of the two leads of Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger, Kouji Kabuto and Tetsuya Tsurugi respectfully. He is essentially the one you expected to be the lead in this show. Unfortunately, he gets hilariously taken out in every robot battle. Again, this is why I love this show. Every time his robot gets broken, everyone always acts like he died and never acknowledge him again during the battle. The last thing I want to mention about him is that he is the final link between all three shows: He is voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama. Here is the trailer that Sketch was referencing. You are going to be getting a lot of that when you watch the series, but it is worth it to get to FINAL. Just by me looking up clips for the notes, manly tears are shedding and they can't stop. It is kind of an endurance challenge for me to watch the Perfect Yell version of the opening. Only when you are done with the series and FINAL, you can attempt at the video. ExplicitEpisode 53.1 - The Marineford Report Card Episode Featuring No Homo | I love the fact that we did this episode when Zach was not around to make him tell us his two cents. Who am I kidding? He has his own show for that. Since the failure that was our One Piece episode has slowly been erased from the feed, we thought it would be best to fill that void and give you an unbiased opinion of the current happenings of the One Piece manga. Of course, if you have already downloaded this episode without reading the notes, you might have just screwed yourself. This is going to be a spoilerific journey through the current arc, where we will grade the individuals (that matter) and give our opinions of who really made the grade. I love how Zach quickly stated that he liked Disney movies when he was a kid. I thought those movies were timeless. Is it wrong to like a Disney movie when you get older? They're finally getting married! (24:36 - 30:42) Discussion (Would You Pull The Trigger?) This could be the first time in a while where we sounded like we knew what we were talking about. This is a very interesting topic that we may go back to in the future. I guess it shows that this series is one of those shows where you really need to sit down and think about what is really going on. That damn cat... (30:43 - 1:08:16) Discussion (You Can't Take The Sky From Me) As per our usual ass backwards fashion, we jumped back and forth between so many topics that I thought I should just group everything in this section together. It just shows that there so much to talk about. We may have to start creating bullet points for the notes next time since we can never seem to segment into proper topics when we cover only one show. Something that I am glad we didn't delve into were the Gung-Ho Guns. Some of the best parts of the series came from them. Even with all the talk about the major plot points, I still consider this a strong recommendation to watch this show. Sadly, there has not been any rescue of the series so far. If you can find a way to watch it, check it out. It's modern time. There, I saved you two hours of your life. You should have watched this movie already. I will say that I mean every bit of of what I said. Really, if you are just starting to get into Super Sentai, you might have gone through the same thing I did. (57:18 - 1:09:55) Discussion (Our Villans) Enemies are a mixed bag for me. From design standpoint, I would give it to Yami no Yaiba and the Questers. Some of the other monsters were very good too. Just based on the color scheme, you can easily tell from which group the are. Though there was still one that was just too silly... (1:09:56 - 1:16:40) Discussion (Movies/Specials) This part was the hardest for me. To be honest, these are quite skippable. I go back and watch videos of previous team-ups and both versions of Boukenger sadly never got my attention. The one glaring issue I had with the Boukenger Vs. Super Sentai special was obviously AkaRed. I guess they spent all their money on getting Tohru Furuya. It kinda reflects upon the American side as well. Though they did manage to get Adam for those episodes, everything around it did not really help it. I will say this: they have better transformation sequences. It's really funny that they got hot chicks to play HurricanBlue and the Blue Wind Ranger for the Japanese and American verison respectively. I don't know if I can stress over how awesome the Forever Red team-up was. It was just sad there was never a moment like that again. Good general discussion type anime podcast
This is a good podcast to listen to for informal discussions of anime and some movies. Personally, it reminded me of sitting around a table and just talking movies and anime and such with friends in college. Definitely not for people who are easily offended. Some of the discussions in the latest episodes have nearly made me laugh out loud, which is good. Good because it's funny, bad because I listen at work and really shouldn't laugh randomly.
Great Anime Podcast
This is one of the better podcasts I've come across since I started listening to podcasts. They obviously cover anime, but they also go into other related areas of fandom like video games and music. The episodes tend to run long, which is great for work, but not so much if you like your podcasts short and sweet. There are several different cast members and there is really no set format, each episode comes off as a group of friends sitting in a room talking and having a good time. I highly recommend this podcast. Good work guys.
F-ing Awesome
This podcast is great because they don't talk about just one thing like other podcasts. The hosts are funny, and their conversations flow with great chemistry. Foxy is my favorite host. Doctor comes second. Give this podcast a listen if you know what's good for you.
