The Company Live! 16 - “PC Still Strong at EA” | Another week, another show. Once again we have a great show. News from all across the gaming world. We started the show with the latest EA 4th quarter and fiscal year 2010 report. Kinda heavy stuff, but we were really looking for the growth in the PC section of EA. According to the report, Q4 2010 PC sales amounted to $178m. While it may not seem like much it is in third $100m behind the X360 and PS3 and $100m ahead of the Wii. This information was interesting as EA is the world’s largest PC game maker. The PC can still compete, as long as there is something worth buying (Activision take note). Moving on, other news we covered included: - Electronic Arts Announces Release Date For Medal of Honor - Activision Confirms Infinity Ward’s Next Game Will Be Call Of Duty - Valve Releasing Major Update for Counter-Strike: Source - MLB ’10 The Show - EA to release 3 Need for Speed games within 10 months - Price cuts all around before the year’s out, publishing source claims - Sales milestones by EA games during 2010 fiscal year - Crysis 2 Declared a “Halo Killer” by EA Boss - Dead Space 2 Now Confirmed For PC Obviously news moving forward will be surrounding Call of Duty: Black Ops. So with that said, we covered the following articles: - Call of Duty: Black Ops Will Feature 4-Player Co-Op - New Call of Duty: Black Ops Details Emerge - Kotick: CoD Black Ops will ‘surprise’ fans - Black Ops to sell 26% less than MW2, predicts analyst - More Details about Call of Duty: Black Ops As always ways to get in touch with us: Teamspeak: ts3.thecompanylive.com Port:9987 Email: jag@thecompanyhub.com Twitter: tc_thecompany. The Company Live! 12 - “A Little Bit of Everything” | We are back from our week off and have a little bit of everything in terms of news. The last couple of weeks have seemed to be quiet on the news front but that hasn't stopped me from finding some great articles to bring to your attention. This week we discussed the following random news articles: - Significant Increase in Web-Connected Consoles During 2009 - Nvidia Geforce GTX 480 Tech demo will make your jaws drop - No Web Browser for the 360 - Politician Fired for Farmville - Sega: PC sales are stronger than reported - Ubisoft Sends Out Multiplayer Map Survey - Why It's Safe To Have Faith In Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - Top networking sites for women gamers - GameCrush: Pay Money, Play with Girls (JimmyCorps not allowed...lol) From the BFBC2 front we talked about: - DICE: Medal of Honor "absolutely not" a BFBC2 clone - Xbox 360 Servers Crash, Gamers Lose All Stats - EA: Battlefield 1943 Due on PC 'Soon' - The Status of Gordon Van Dyke w/DICE In Activision/CoD related news we have: - Activision Quietly Restructures - Next Call of Duty called Black Ops - Modern Warfare 2 sees no threat in BFBC2, MOH, new COD Finally we talked a little about some of the social networking outreach we have been trying over at The Company. We are now on over a dozen networking sites and are looking to build our followers across all of them. As a result, we have set a goal to try and reach 1,000 Facebook Fans and 1,000 Twitter Followers. Hopefully you will be able to help us out on this mission. To help, we have asked that guys designate Tuesdays to "TCTuesdays" where you can encourage your friends, fans, and followers to also follow us. The Company Live! 11 - “15 Modders Who Changed PC Gaming” | On Sunday when I found the article "15 Modders Who Changed PC Gaming" I knew this was going to be out topic for the week. I had a few other things I was interested in, but seeing as many of the guys who support our show and listen are either currently modders or have been modders I thought this would be a great discussion for the show. Joining me this week on the show was JimmyCorps, Bluepinoy, Ironman, Dirk_N_It, Pst. Joker and Spacepig. We covered a few different stories before moving onto the main story such as: - Top 5 games to play as a couple - Would you pay a girl to play a game with you? - Wii Drinking Games Spacepig was on hand to let us know about the Big Brother Bot (B3) project he has been working on for BC2. For those of you who are unfamiliar with B3, it's bascially an automated admin for your server. It has various settings that allow you to admin your server when you admins are even present. It has the ability to balance teams, warn on teamkills, and a number of other behavioral things. Now I have seen B3 run on other servers in Call of Duty and had some experience with it. I love it as for the larger communities like ours that don't have the ability to have admins in each of our servers 24/7 this is a wonderful tool. Spacepig explained that the basic core of code for B3 remains the same from game to game, but the difficulty comes from tailoring it to each specific game. Either way I know his team will get this worked out and we will all be able to breathe a little easier when admins aren't around. Moving on to the biggest part of the show, "15 Modders Who Changed PC Gaming", we went through the list. Now when lists like this come out it's always interesting to see how much the writer actually knows about PC gaming. It seems the author here dropped the ball. While he got a few that had an impact, most on the list do not. Right off the bat the title of the article is misleading. Instead of being mods that changed PC gaming is should have been "15 Mods the author likes". The few that did have a significant impact were Desert Combat, Team Fortress, and Counter Strike. What the author really missed were the contributions from the generations of Call of Duty modders. Many in fact had a direct impact on how the game has developed over the series. Pst. Joker and Spacepig were kind enough to stick around for this part of the show and their contributions to the CoD series can never be overlooked. Anyone who has played MW2 and has played past versions of Extreme and OpenWarfare will certainly recognize elements in the new game. I will let you know that Spacepigs mic was a little crazy so bear with me I tried to clean it up as much as I could. The Company Live! 10 - “PC vs. PS3″ | Another week has passed and we are back again for our 10th episode! This time we got a great crew ready to give you their input on the news. Here are the articles we covered: - Power Gig Announced; Uses Real Guitar As Controller - Rock Band 3 Confirmed for Holiday 2010 - Bodycount to "Rip Apart The FPS" - PC Games Net $13.1 Billion in 2009 as Digital Distribution Grows and Retail Sales Shrink. Moving on to news from Activision we have the following articles: - Activision doesn't just churn sh*t out - First Modern Warfare 2 DLC Arrives March 30 - Modern Warfare 2 "Stimulus Package" Adds 5 Maps From the BFBC2 front we have the following: - Battlefield: Bad Company 2 DLC Due Alongside Modern Warfare 2's as DICE Throws Gauntlet However, the story we spent the most time on was the news that the PS Move controller for the PS3 might kill the mouse as the premier controller for FPS games. To add to the discussion I found a great video that is posted on the front page of The Company at www.thecompanyhub.com. I had a great time with the crew that showed up. I encourage anyone who is able to join us on Tuesday nights to do so. As always ways to get in touch with us: Teamspeak: 75.102.34.106:9988 Email: tclive@tchubmail.com Twitter: tc_thecompany. The Company Live! 9 “The Week After” | Back for another great show tonight. The new article system on the website is working great so far. Every time I star an article in my RSS reader it goes straight to the site so everyone can check them out before the show. That aside, we discussed the still developing fallout from the Activision/Infinity Ward fiasco. This story is going to continue to develop and who really knows where this one will end up. All I really can say for sure is that the best is yet to come. I have a feeling there is more to this story than meets the eye. BFBC2 has been out for officially 1 week! For better or worse the game has arrived and has instantly made its mark not only upon our own community of The Company, but gaming communities around the world. However, for all we expected it seems the game has been off to a bit of a false start. Server disconnects have pretty much hampered all of the fun were should be having. However, DICE has proven that they are solidly behind the game and have already released 6 patches in 7 days to try and fix the problems. Most if not all problems can be related to the success of the game, which has seen an overload of the EA Master Servers about once (if not more times) per day. DICE even said they are currently running at over 400% of capacity. With this in mind, it is no wonder we are seeing Master Server issues. I'm sure we'll see them get a handle on everything and the issues will iron out soon enough. If that isn't enough good news for you, the PC is currently more popular than both consoles combined! It wouldn't be a show without some lists, so we covered the Top 10 Characters that Deserve Their Own Game as well as The 25 Most Iconic Videogame Weapons. It was another great show! Thanks to my community guys who joined us on air. I encourage everyone to join us live if they can. The Company Live! 8 “Release Day” | Well it's finally here! Battlefield Bad Company 2 has officially hit store shelves and electronic download centers all across North America. I was fortunate enough to get my 5.4/gb copy from EA via their official downloader on Monday night. This way I was ready to go Tuesday. However, I was actually able to install the game at about 11 est on Monday night so I was in and gaming while most still waited. BFBC2 aside, there was some other news breaking Sunday evening. It seems the boys over IW had their boat rocked a little by Activision. Both Jason West and Vince Zampella were summerially bounced for a yet undisclosed reasons. It seems the winds of change are running through Activision at this time. We discussed what this means for IW and the CoD series by reviewing some of the news that has been breaking. We also took the time to go through some general news stories and some Top 10 lists. With the release of BFBC2 I personally was experiencing some major problems. It seems the Master Servers got overloaded and there were reports of login errors as well as disconnects all across the community. Our own servers had a problem staying up for 5 minutes. Those issues aside, when you were able to get into a game, the maps are great, the sound is awesome, and the visuals are just plain stunning. Best way to find out what we talked about is to listen to go ahead and listen away! Lastly, we recently updated The Company Live! webpage. It is now simplified and more streamlined. We offer access to news feeds from around the gaming world as well as developing a community blog. Furthermore, we have a new feature that automatically shows what articles I am looking at for upcoming casts. This way you can leave comments on the articles throughout the week and I'll make sure to discuss the most popular ones. It was another great show and I encourage everyone to join us live if they can. The Company Live! - Cast 7 “CoD 7 Goes Vietnam” | With just about two weeks left until the official release of BFBC2 I decided we should take a look around the community and talk about the importance of the PC as a continued gaming platform. JimmyCorps from jimmycorps.com was kind enough to join me for the entirety of the cast this week. Here are the articles we covered this week: - Why The Military Doesn't Train On Xboxes - Ghost Recon Future Soldier Revealed Next Month - Total War Not Coming to Consoles - Warcraft Player Chokes Mother After Refusing To Quiet Down My personal favorite story this week has to be the news that Sid Meier is releasing Civilization 5 this fall. I'm not sure how many of you have ever played this game, but I certainly would put this in the category of a game that every gamer should own. - Medal of Honor Will Have Peek and Lean - Battlefield 3 Has Been In Development For 3 Years - Bobby Kotick Expresses Regret for Passing on Sims and Harmonix Our Top 10 list for this week consisted of the Scariest Games of All Time. There are certainly more than a few on the list that have scared me. What about you? Let me know your thoughts. Finally, there has been news around the location of Treyarch's upcoming CoD7. I can officially confirm that the game is going to be in Vietnam. Jimmy and I spent some time discussing what this means for the Call of Duty series as many game developers have shown a tendency to shy away from this period in American history. Your thoughts on what CoD:Vietnam means for the gaming community would be welcome. We had another great show and I encourage everyone to join us live if they can. The Company Live! - Cast 6 “How to Get a Gamer Girl” | Hey everyone, we are back for another great show! With many news articles to review this week, I thought I'd give a little focus to one relating to Valentine's Day. For all you lonely guys out there we discussed an article from GamePro Australia. http://www.gamepro.com.au/article/335920/how_snag_girl_gamer/ Furthermore we discussed the following articles: - Ubisoft want to release sequels every 12-18 months - Codemasters working on a new shooter property - Activision closes two studios, relocates staff - Wii in short supply again - Nintendo takes down WiiWare Demos - Next Call of Duty confirmed for 2010 - Call of Duty 7 won't be as big as Modern Warfare 2 - Activision using Modern Warfare 2 launch as "a roadmap" - World of Warcraft has possibly plateaued - Wii-related injuries on the rise - January's top selling U.S. Games/Hardware sales and - Battlefield Bad Company 2 News! We have much more jammed into this short hour. If you miss a show you miss a lot! The Company Live! - Cast 5 “General Randomness” | General randomness is the best way to describe this show. We have tons of news from all sorts of sources. If there is one cast you need to listen to to get caught up on what's going on in the gaming world, this is the one. - Ubisoft has announced their latest installment of the Ghost Recon series, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - Harmonix Licenses Timbaland, M.O.P., and More - Empire: Total War offers more DLC - Medal of Honor coming before September! (Awesome!) - Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for $19.95? (Say what!?!) - Crysis 2 out before the end of the year - Left 4 Dead 2 reaches 2.9 million in 2009 sales - Microsoft shuts down Xbox live for original Xbox - ModDB Mod of the Year winners are announced (Pst. Joker/Extreme not among the nominees???) - Sims 3 coming to a console near you (Yep thats right) - MW2 patch 1.0.182 makes things actually worse (go figure...) Lastly we have the TOP 20 RENTALS OF 2009! Don't miss this show. We will be back next week with even more news. The Company Live! - Cast 4 “Beta Thoughts” | We are back for our 4th cast, and once again too much news around BFBC2 to ignore. The beta has been released since our last cast so I give my thoughts on it, as well as we hear from Lefty and gamers. Everyone has great points and from what I've experienced and heard around the community, this is going to be a great game. There are bugs in the system right now, we know that, DICE knows that, but overall this is going to be a hit. There is no reason every community shouldn't be gearing up for the release of this game in March. We also talked about some news articles swirling around out there regarding BFBC2 and Crysis 2: - Battlefield is the best multiplayer FPS period - There will be no prone, so you can stop asking - Co-op will be added to BFBC2 - Crysis 2 simply the best graphics, hands down As always we had a lot of fun so it's definitely worth a listen. At just under an hour in length there is a lot in there that we discussed that I missed here in the write up so take the time, give it a listen and join us live next week! The Company Live! - Cast 3 “The Beta Cometh” | We are back from our week off and ready to go. This time we decided to work some different formats into the cast in the forum of YouTube videos. I apologize for all those who are going to listen as you certainly are going to hear the audio, but miss the video. Apparently, Ustream did not catch our video either so here are the links to the videos we watch: *NEW* Battlefield Bad Company 2: Singleplayer Gameplay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SKH1eHep7c Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Squad Rush Mode http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ED2EiCAMTs Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Patrick Bach Interview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm5eJM5CY7U Since we have been off the air for two weeks we have seen some changes. DICE has revitalized their blog, a BFBC2 single-player trailer has been released, BFBC2 PC beta info has started to trickle out, and many other things! We touched on some other things we'd like to see with the upcoming release and thoughts about the future of PC gaming in general. I know I normally do a larger write up, but this time since we viewed a bunch of videos I really think it's best seen not read. The Company Live! - Cast 2 | This week we focused in on rumors. There has been a lot of information and misinformation flying around the internet as of lately regarding BFBC2 as well as CoD. We try our best to cover some of the main rumors people have been talking about. With Bad Company 2, we have the rumor that there are no dedicated servers. No I as an admin of a Battlefield 2 server find this a little hilarious. This rumor can be traced to a tweet from one of the DICE dev guys stating there will be no SAD files. Well if you currently have or have ever had a "Ranked" Battlefield 2 server this should come as no surprise. We have never had access to ANY server files. DICE has kept these off limits since day one. Why would we expect them to release them now is beyond me. That being said, it seems there are a few out there who believed we would be given the entire package similar to how Call of Duty has operated. For those of you who believe this is how a dedicated server needs to be run grab a pencil and paper and write the following 100 times: Battlefield is NOT Call of Duty. Ok, pencils down. Now that we have determined that Battlefield is NOT Call of Duty, we can change our expectations to what we really will see. I have even made a nice little diagram to help you along if you prefer visual stimulation :) http://fpsurl.com/?k4rx54 From the diagram we have EA/DICE at the top. They obviously are holding all the server files. This means they can distribute them to only who they approve. On the left we see the Approved Game Server Providers. These lucky few will receive the multiplayer server files from DICE. On the right we see the home user (PS. thats you!). The home user will receive no multiplayer server files. Basically this means that in order to have a multiplayer BFBC2 server you are going to have to go through an Approved Game Server Provider. You CANNOT do this on your own. As with other "Ranked" Battlefield servers you will have to contact your host, for example ours is Hypernia, and ask them to install your server. They will then put the 5 or however many files needed onto your dedicated server box that you host with them, NOT the one in your parents basement. Hypernia will then submit your IP address to EA/DICE for logging and verification and VOILA! Instant BFBC2 server! It's really not that difficult but for some reason this has escaped a few. To be brief, there will also be admin support for BFBC2 as we already see in BFCC (http://www.bf2cc.com). DICE has previously wired support for this program into their game so why would we expect it to be any different now. CC is a great control and I have many times wished CoD had something similar. Moving on we discussed CoD possibly changing direction and becoming an MMO as well as the leaking that CoD7 may be set in Vietnam. We already knew Treyarch was going to be the developer we just didn't know what it was going to be. Furthermore, along with the MMO information there was news that Infinity Ward may not do MW3. Leave this to interpretation as you may, but I think they may be switching gears again so I'm sure we'll hear more as this progresses. Finally, Robert Bowling (FourZeroTwo) of Infinity Ward is looking for new call signs for the upcoming MW2 downloadable content. Send us your best and we'll read them on the air during the next show. We will then pick our top five and send them to Mr. Bowling himself. We had some great callers and had some great discussions this week, so if you missed it be sure to listen here or download it to your iTunes.
