Podcast Description
The Noise Pop Podcast is a monthly series showcasing important, noteworthy new releases from the independent and underground music scene. The Noise Pop podcast is unique because it simply serves as a forum for new music discovery. Host Dawson Ludwig handpicks the music each month and delivers his knowledgeable perspective on the artists and their song that withholds critique. The podcast also features musical tastemakers and musicians to discuss recent music discoveries, larger topics about the state of independent music, and the process of writing and recording music. Noise Pop (www.noisepop.com) sprang to life in 1993. It was originally a single night in a small club showcasing the best of the burgeoning underground San Francisco music scene. It has since developed into one of the country's leading independent music festivals. The event has achieved grassroots and critical success, as well as international recognition. Many of the most important artists of our time -- including The White Stripes, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World, The Flaming Lips, The Shins, Bright Eyes, and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco have played on the Noise Pop stages. Over the course of five days, Noise Pop presents dozens of unique and important music shows in the city's best-loved venues. It has grown to include a film festival, an educational series, and art openings. It is a music-lover's celebration and a celebration of San Francisco -- the shows sell out, people have fun, and every year the event grows in size and scope. Noise Pop also co-produces the Treasure Island Music Festival in October. The two-day festival has featured some of the most exciting burgeoning and established indie artists of our time. Much like the Noise Pop Music Festival, Treasure Island is a love letter to San Francisco and its one-of-a-kind independent culture.

ExplicitRecord Labels | Labels. You’ve heard their names before - Barsuck, Matador, DFA – but do you actually know what they do? This week the Noise Pop Podcast is here to edify on exactly who these labels are and why they exist. Helping them along the way are Sonya Kolowrat from Beggars, Mona Dehghan from Domino, Tyler Stover from Lefse, Paul Hanly of Frenchkiss and Jamie Farkas of Vice. They all offer insights and anecdotes on how their labels operate. Sticking with the theme the gang each picks their favorite labels for their Ear About Town segment. ExplicitR&B Indie Music | This week the NPP team tackles the new trend of popular R&B taking root in indie music. With new artists like The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and How To Dress Well, it's clear that 90's R&B is making a comeback. This episode explores how it got to this point. The first clue started a few years ago when contemporary bands began covering R&B hits from the 90's - in 2009 The xx covered Aaliyah’s “Hot Like Fire.” Shortly after, the influence of this sound grew apparent in new indie bands like Gayngs and James Blake. Dirty Projector’s smash “Stillness in the Move” was a watershed moment, in which a pure R&B vocal was paired with the bands traditionally challenging sound. Now the stage is set for not just artists dabbling in an R&B sound but actual pure R&B artist to be embraced by the independent community, a fascinating and rewarding new trend in music. The group also announce the winning name of their recommendation segment, “Ear About Town.” This episode’s segment Jesse, Jaime and Dawson stay with the theme and share their respective favorite R&B song from the 1990’s. 1. “House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls” – The Weeknd, House of Balloons 2. “Transparency” – d’Eon, Darkbloom 3. “Are You That Somebody?” (clip) – Aaliyah, Dr. Doolittle Soundtrack 4. “Hot Like Fire” Aaliyah Cover (clip) - The xx, B-Side to Crystalized Single 5. “Don’t Take it Personal” Monica Cover - White Hinterland, single 6. “Gaudy Side of Town” – Gayngs, Relayted 7. “Stillness is the Move” (clip) – Dirty Projectors, Bitte Orca 8. “Stillness is the Move” (clip) – Solange, single 9. “Songs for Women” - Frank Ocean, Nostalgia/Ultra 10. “Wicked Games” - The Weeknd, House of Balloons 11. “Ready for the World” - How to Dress Well, Love Remains Ear About Town Jesse: “Cupid” (clip) – 112, 112 Jaime: “All My Life” (clip) – K-Ci and JoJo, Love Always Dawson – “Pony” (clip) – Ginuwine, Ginuwine the Bachelor | 4/26/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Indie Staple
This is one of my staples for finding new music I love. It's 10% funny banter, 10% helpful info, and 80% awesome independent music. It features a lot of great local (SF Bay Area) artists as well as national ones, and gives a good variety of genres within the indie scope. Noise Pop has been a mainstay in the local independent music scene for almost 20 years, and an early supporter of bands like Modest Mouse and The White Stripes. I can't think of a more trusted source for sharing great artists before they get big. Definitely worth a listen. Highly recommended!
the authority on bay area indie music
that's right folks, i said it. sure you have pitchfork and kcrw and woxy and whomever. and you know, i love them for what they give me. but being a san franciscan, i love the local flavor of this podcast. and really, the fact that it's not just local acts that are played, but at least they're featured. i've discovered great stuff on here, like delorean and others. and come on, who else is making indie music waves, or at least monitoring them, like noisepop? check it out, y'all...you're hella gonna like it.
ear on the pulse
great round up of indy music in the Bay Area, I'm hooked
