CleanDigital Punk Marketing | Recorded March 30, 2012 Täby, Sweden The Malcolm McLaren Approach to Online Markting I‘m a couple of years too young to have experienced the heyday of punk rock, but we’re fast approaching the second anniversary of the death of one of punk rock’s greatest pioneering spirits. Malcolm McLaren. For all its opposition to mainstream culture, anti-authoritarianism and anti-capitalist ideology, I think that those of us involved in content creation and online marketing, whether it’s business blogging, social media presence, podcasting or video-casting, could occasionally benefit from approaching business blogs with a bit of punk attitude. So in memory of Malcolm McLaren this week’s show is a bit of a A Punk Guide to Business Blogging. DIY Punk was all about Do it yourself. Small business just starting out? Don’t be intimidated by the big business blogs out there. You can do it yourself. Define your niche, get an install of WordPressfired up, customize a great theme like Thesis , Genesis (Prose in particular is very easy because it gives you plenty of styling options) and away you go. Make it happen. Create content that helps you find your own voice. The great thing is, is that even if you discover you’re a better video blogger than wordsmith, you can use your blog (along with YouTube and Vimeo) to showcase and build your webpresence. There’s nothing to say you can’t do whatever you like. Which brings me to my next point. Participate One of the greatest things about punk was that it encouraged anyone to get involved. Suddenly it was alright for anyone to get on stage, sing and shout even if you couldn’t play more than four chords! The emphasis was on taking part. Now this goes out to all you business owners that haven’t dared to participate yet. Sure, you maybe watching and learning, but that’s not going to get yo anywhere. Only by making the transition from bedroom bass player to onstage punkster is going to take you to the next level. And I’m speaking metaphorically about your business here. Rebel Whether you’re new to business blogging or have an established site, why not think about what you can do differently? There’s a plethora of blogs out there that all sound the same, look the same and ultimately leave readers feeling the same. The same can be said of social media praxis. I suffer from this. We all suffer from this. When was the last time you saw a businesses doing something truly different on Twitter? We get sucked into the word of Best Practice. There is so much info on the Net its easy to ask Google what we should do when ;) Launching a new product, Dealing with a crisis, etc. One of the great things Malcolm McLaren and the rest of the punks was stick the proverbial two fingers up at the establishment and the standard way of doing things. Blogging in the business sphere is so like this at the moment. It doesn’t matter where you go or what you do, there’s a vanilla feel to it. How is your blog rebelling? Are you getting a reaction? Are people talking about you? I know Mark Schaefer talks about the Chris Brogan affect - http://www.businessesgrow.com/2010/11/14/why-chris-brogan-is-invincible/ and daring to question Brogan’s position brought a lot of traffic his way. Do you dare to be provocative ? I think I could learn from this myself. Be individual Being yourself is essential. Don’t try to be another Chris Brogan or Seth Godin. And definitely don’t try to mirror your brand on something else. Look at your strengths and what makes your take on your industry different and play to them. Give readers of your company blog a different flavour to the rest of blogosphere. Although some won’t like what you’re doing, you may well find there’s an audience who’ve been looking for a voice like yours. Reject tradition and authority If you’re just starting a business blog, you’re not likely to be as restricted bytraditional | 3/30/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Clean6 Tips to Write a Better Business Blog | 1) Be on topic No matter what you do, even before we talk about the nuts and bolts of writing, your blog should be highly focused. It should be consistent with your topic and not wander off down a variety of garden paths. Regular posts on topic will teach visitors just what your blog is all about. They’ll come to expect the focus of your blog and more than the slightest, most occasional variation could drive them away. What’s more the overall tone of your blog should also be consistently on topic. Don’t be super cynical the next day to be friendly and conversational the next and then super scholarly. Readers won’t know what to expect. 2) Write for a friend, not a college professor. Because I have a PHD and a stack of years in academia I know I have a liking for jargon. So I have to force myself to be more conversational when blogging. Just as it’s important to get the tone right of your university assignments, it’s vital you don’t send people away with the wrong kind of tone on your blog. Typically, long words, overly formal phrasing switches people off because we tend to skim when reading on the web. If you think of a blog post as the start of a conversation, you’re more likely to engage your readers too. Sure, even if you’re providing a tutorial or crucial information, you can still elicit questions – I mean, ask your readers questions – to invite them into the conversation. 3) Keep it simple, keep it sweet. One of the most successful kind of posts on my own site tend to be list posts. Although I often think when I’ve finished writing them that perhaps they’re a tad throwaway, it seems readers like to skim through short-ish posts. For SEO purposes you need to have about 350-400 words to a post but there’s not much need to go on and on and on. Sure, there will always be those folks who read on but it’s very typical that people read just above the fold or click away if their attention span wains. I think the golden rule is one topic per post. If you’ve got plenty to say, try breaking it up into a couple of posts or a series of posts on say, How to maximize your use of Twitter. 4) Write for your target audience British novelist Jonathan Swift once wrote about knowing as much about your reader as possible. The same goes for successful business blogging. The more you know, the better you can target your audience with meaningful content. Sure, it can be good to throw them a curve ball occasionally, but providing the kind of content that is valuable to your audience is exactly what will keep them coming back for more. If you struggle to know your ideal audience, I’d recommend sitting down with a cup of tea or coffee, or whatever’s your poison, and a notebook. Think through every possible thing about your ideal blog visitor. Write down a stack of questions and then answer them. What kind of music do they like? What sites do they think are attractive? How much are they willing to spend? How long do they spend on your site? The more you know your audience, the better you’ll target your content. And that will mean better results. 5) Optimize your content for the screen Using lists and bullet points is a great way for communicating key info on a blog. Long paragraphs, like long posts, tend to deter readers. The easier it is for them to skim through the page and pick up the key information the better. The use of sub-headings also serve to make it easier to read and dip into posts. Sub-headings aren’t just about making the text easier to read though. They can also be a great way of garnering interest in your post. Just like an intriguing or striking headline will get you there in the first place, a sub-heading that stands out from the crowd will also keep readers on your blog. 6) Be You When I say Be You I’m really talking about being consistently you: sticking to your guns, your topic. The tone of voice you use. Some bloggers start off trying to cop | 12/8/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanThe One About Podcasting #5 | It's summertime here in Stockholm and I've been using a few days to play with some new podcasting equipment that I bought: a Hell Pr 40 microphone and a Soundcraft ERm mixer. Episode #5 is all about why I invested in (rather) expensive equipment despite only having produced four podcasts hitherto, and why businesses should be podcasting. I talk about the need to show – and not just tell – in business, getting involved in podcast interviews even if you don't have a podcast, and some of the great podcasters out there who've helped me on my podcasting journey with the advice and help they put out into the community. So thanks: Cliff Ravenscraft – the Podcast Answerman Podcast Shel Holtz - audio recording with a mix-minus video and the For Immediate Release Podcast Daniel Lewis - The Audacity to Podcast Podcasters' Emporium Podcast In this episode I also mention Michelle Tripp's Brandforward Top 10 Podcast. Finally, in response to a reader question about WP Themes I discuss the merits of the Thesis and Headway themes.
