RWW 53 Acanthus Workshop Fundamentals 1 Part 1 | Last month I took the Woodworking Fundamentals 1 class at The Acanthus Workshop up in central PA. It was a lot of fun and an eye opening experience. I was so excited when I left class for the day that I took down my thoughts while driving on my iphone voice recorder. So here it is now in all it's glory. Keep in mind I was driving very rural roads so besides having to watch out for the ocassional Amish horse drawn buggy I didn't meet too much traffic. I was very safe and stopped and started this recording many times to deal with the act of driving safely. I'm sure the criticism will come anyway but I promise I was safe. | 8/10/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
VideoRWW 52 Greco Roman Tenons Olympic Event | This is my last installment on the Hand Tool Olympics. The mortise and tenon joint is a staple in furniture making and there are more ways to make it than I can count (yes I have all ten fingers). Let's take a look at this event and some tips to help you along the way. | 8/2/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoRWW 51 Olympic Dovetails | Hand cutting dovetails seem to be the peak of hand skills. I labored under this impression for a long time until I just broke down and gave them a try. Honestly they are not that hard and I think we all psyche ourselves out too much. This week I will make some friends and make some enemies as I show my pins first disposition. | 7/29/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoRWW 50 Bore A Hole in One | Time to take a look at the next event in the Woodworking In America Hand Tool Olympics. The brace and bit has been discarded over the years for more and more powerful cordless drills and drill presses. In my recent experience of building a Roubo bench I found my brace to be unmatched when dealing with large stock and really large holes. This is a great tool to become familar with and this event is just the push you need to become fast friends with your brace and bit. | 7/27/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoRWW 49 Crosscut Extravaganza | In this episode I talk everyone through the cross cutting event at the Woodworking in America Hand Tool Olympics. At face value a simple event, but make sure you keep your saw plumb and square or points will be deducted. So channel your inner square and start sawing! Enjoy the show | 7/24/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoRWW 48 Olympic Shooting Preparations | Time to focus on the shooting event of the WIA Hand Tool Olympics. I consider this to be one of the tougher events in the line up. A good plane can flatten the edge but can you get it square to the face. I will discuss a couple techniques to do this depending on how the plane blade is sharpened. Ultimately the easiest way to true an edge is just to lean into the high side and the plane will take a heavier shaving on that side. Enjoy the show! | 7/23/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoRWW 47 Let the Games Begin | This week I release part 1 of a 6 part series on the Woodworking In America Hand Tool Olympics. Each episode will focus on one of the events and how to prepare yourself for the competition. Put on your game faces and let's make some dust!Make sure to check out Mike Siemsen's blog at the Siemsen School of Woodworking. Mike is the president of the local Society of American Period Furnituremakers (SAPFM) who is the judging body of this competition. Mike just put up a post that shows us the tools that will be provided for each event and how it will be judged. | 7/20/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoRWW 46 Sharpening A Rip Saw | This week I am going to put myself out there for open criticism. I am a saw sharpening novice and I only have done a lot of reading to get to this point. I am going to show you the first time I sharpen a rip saw. I hope this provokes a lot of criticism actually so I can improve my technique. | 7/13/09 | Free | View In iTunes
