iTunes Review

…And the Ever Expanding Universe is the third release by this intriguing Toronto-based band. The seven talented members have the collective chops to make a big, complex sound, which they definitely do here, but they also show some relative restraint. This combination of grandiose arrangements (the instrumental “Patternicity,” “Four Humours,” “No One Likes a Nihilist”) and more straight-ahead fare (“Bubble Reputation,” “Heavens to Purgatory,” “Don’t Hold Back, Feel a Little Longer”) help make this release ambitious, experimental, and accessible — a tough trick indeed. There’s a lot going on here, from split-second tempo changes to multi-part vocal harmonies, but the songs are dynamic and varied enough to work. Brass, woodwinds, strings, guitars, complex drumming, piano, synthesizers, even some banjo, are all mixed in to good effect. Not inconsequentially, the album was produced by Dave Newfeld, who has worked with many artists associated with Broken Social Scene, a band that the Most Serene Republic shares a label with as well as an aesthetic.

Musical Masters

This is by far their best work...they have taken all the best parts of their previous works and shuffled them into a great bunch of tunes. they have also mastered the art of production in their work too.

Best Album Yet!!!

"...And the Ever Expanding Universe" marks a big improvement over their last album. Finally, their songs are not so cluttered. Both singers do not always have to be singing at the same time, which I believe this group has finally figured out. While, "Population", as an instrumental album would have best absolutely amazing, this cd still has some very cool tracks. Definitely Buy: "Heavens to Purgatory", "Phi", "The Old Forever Things New", "All of One is the Other", and "No One Likes a Nihilist".

Great Album, But...

Great album, but I think every TMSR fan will agree that their other albums are superior. Four stars for being thoroughly enjoyable, but sorry, I have to compare this one to their previous albums, and so this falls short of the 5 star mark. I really like "Bubble Reputatiion" and "Patternicity" on this one. Definitely buy ...And the Ever Expanding Universe, but not before you buy TMSR's other albums. P.S. Thank you, TMSR, for not selling out the way some of my other favorite bands have done this year, e.g., Silversun Pickups and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
