Album Review

Spawning four hit singles, But Seriously topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. While pursuing much of the same formula as on No Jacket Required, there was also a move toward more organic production as Collins abandoned some of the drum machines and prominent keyboards in the up-tempo numbers in favor of live instrumentation. The decision was a good one as there's no doubt that tracks such as "Find a Way to My Heart" and "Hang in Long Enough" have enough bite to outlast his more dated sounding mid-80s material. As usual, there are a bit too many generic ballads here, but when Collins moves out of his formula as on the dramatic gospel-influenced "I Wish it Would Rain Down," featuring Eric Clapton, the results are staggering.

Good Album

Phil Collins is mostly noted for "In The Air Tonight" and "You'll Be In My Heart(Tarzan)".I didn't realize that he had so many other good songs as well. I didn't think this album would be very good, but it definately is. Most of the songs have good hooks and good drumbeat. He utilizes horns (trumpet, trombone, etc.) and it sounds really good. Not every song on this album is a hit, but I enjoy listening to them.

A Phenominal Album

'But Seriously' is certainly one of Phil's best albums, some may argue his VERY BEST album. It incaptures everything that Phil Collins fans love about his music, from upbeat, hard hitting numbers like 'Hang In Long Enough' and 'Something Happened On The Way To Heaven' to soft ballads like 'Do You Remember' and 'Father To Son', deep, thought-provoking songs like 'That's Just The Way It Is', 'Colours' and 'Another Day In Paradise' and reflective songs like 'All Of My Life'. Throw in the jazzy instrumental 'Sat. Nite & Sun. Morning' and the fusion and world-sound inspired 'Find A Way To My Heart', which features some Brand X and early Genesis-style drumming. More organic, the album is really a return to form and a more traditionally PC album than the synthetic, commercial, overly poppy and quite dated 'No Jacket Required'. There is a much more open, live sound throughout the record and plenty of live instrumentation. Collins still uses the drum machine on a few tracks, but to a much greater effect than on his previous album. If you love Phil Collins' music, and don't yet have this album, get it!!! You won't be disappointed.

Great

Truly a great album!!

Phil Collins' ascent to the status of one of the most successful pop and adult contemporary singers of the '80s and beyond was probably as much of a surprise to him as it was to many others. Balding and diminutive, Collins was almost 30 years old when his first solo single, "In the Air Tonight," became a number two hit in his native U.K. (the...
