iTunes Review
Face it: She's never coming back. Yet here you are again for the fifth Friday in a row — caught in a stasis, as paralyzed as someone who just saw a ghost. Which is exactly how ( ) starts and stays for five tracks and nearly 30 glacial minutes, sparking a song cycle of denial and acceptance that's as gorgeous and grand as it is dire and debilitating. A breakup album in the most untraditional sense, it plays out like the plot of an independent movie with major studio backing, leaving everything up to the imagination with a nonlinear progression of disembodied phrases ("you sat along the fire," "you suffer, alone," both of which are repeated nonsensically throughout the record) and crystalline sound (the lonely ping of an elongated piano chord, the brushing and crashing of cymbals, the complete cacophony of tension-releasing riffs). By the time the eighth and final untitled track careens and climaxes, the effect is like being chased by a serial killer — one close enough to poke and prod, but not quick slice, the skin — only to be saved at the last second by some sort of intervening hope. In other words, it's a thrill ride from start to end, even during its slowest, most alien moments.
Customer Reviews
Beautiful, Extraordinary, Supernatural
There are few words I can think of to describe how this album makes me feel. But in short it connects with me like how hearing angels sing would connect with me. I don't understand Icelandic, and I definitely don't understand "Hopelandic", but somehow I do, in certain ways. There are no titles, no lyrics, no genres or labels to define this album, it's only music and the experience you get from listening to it. There's two climaxes in track 6 that, shake my very being. The beginning of track 8 is pure happiness like reuniting with loved ones in heaven, glowing nostalgia and the like, then midway it flips around, in the most eerie way. Like the loved ones suddenly disappeared and you were searching for them frantically, something straight out of a bad dream too complex and riddled for you to remember in the morning. Track 4 is a child's innocence in song form. I don't really agree with the official review for this album, whoever wrote it said it was like a soundtrack to relationship problems, I think this album conveys something that weighs much more on the scale. This album is like a soundtrack to dreams, sleep, every season of the year, foggy mornings, rainy nights, lots of loneliness, bits of wholeness, and that feeling you get when you look up at the stars.
Life changing
Sigur Rós have changed the way I listen to music in general. I've been playing the songs on this album just about every day for almost a year, and they still take my breath away. With no title, no track names, and no comprehensible words on ( ), the music is open to interpretation and completely universal. This is, hands down, my all-time favorite album.
Amazing
Highly original and enjoyable. This album is not for everyone. Some people simply won't get it. That's their loss. I found it amusing that one reviewer here claimed that Sigur Ros isn't music. It probably didn't fit his formula. He's probably home right now watching American Idol so he can see who the next big thing is going to be.
