Album Review

Rogue Wave's first album, Out of the Shadow, was an underrated indie rock gem that managed to be reminiscent of many fine bands (Yo La Tengo, Elliott Smith, the Elephant 6 collective) without sounding like a carbon copy. Their first single for their second full-length sounds like they haven't change much. "10:1" is taken from their 2005 album Descended Like Vultures and is a clattering rocker that balances a rollicking wave of electric piano and drums with Zach Rogue's yearning vocals. While it sacrifices tunefulness in favor of wild energy, it serves as a fine intro to the album. The other three tracks are exclusive to the release and are as good as anything on the first album. "Interuptions," "Wait for It," and "Crush the Camera" revisit low-key and introspective bedroom pop territory with acoustic guitars and achingly wistful vocals the main focus. Terrifically lovely and tender, they make the disc well worth springing for if you are a fan of the band.

Customer Reviews

Woah...this is goooood.

I've clicked on a few of the ads on iTunes to listen to new music. Most of the time...please..'garbage' would be too kind. Lots of bands trying to sound like lots of other bands. And then I clicked on the Rogue Wave ad. Woah... Here is a band that has it all together: good songwriting, arrangements and production. There is something smart about them, as clever as Radiohead without all the hype.

This is one of RW's best

I honestly don't see why this EP isn't doing better than "descended like vultures". They are both great cds but 10:1 - EP really has more of the "out of the shadow" sound.

An acquired taste...

I didn't originally like this single when I bought the CD a while back, but the song has truely grown on me. The guitar builds and the great beat really resonate in the listener, I guess it just takes some time to thing about the song differently, at least for me. This album is a great addition to any Rogue Wave collection, Crush the Camera will catch you, Interruptions will keep you there, and 10:1 will grow on you, then blow you away. Side Note: 10:1 was a odd addition on "Descended Like Vultures." It didn't really fit with the rest of the album. Go Figure.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Rogue Wave formed in 2002 when a newly-unemployed Zach Rogue left his San Francisco home, visited friends in New York City, and returned to California with nearly a full album's worth of textured, cerebral indie pop. Rogue then quit his post in his previous group, the Desoto Reds, and finished the album, which was released on Rogue's own Responsive label under the title Out of the Shadow. As he was completing the record, Rogue decided to form a band in order to perform the material live, and he soon...
