iTunes Review

Long ago dubbed "the Jewish Elvis," Neil Diamond earned the moniker for his love of sequined jumpsuits and musical melodrama. But Diamond is also similar to Presley in that his earliest work — the lean, hungry songs he wrote in the '60s and early '70s — stands as his best. Producer Rick Rubin was determined to help Diamond rediscover his voice and, similar to the reinvention Rubin engineered for Johnny Cash during the '90s, the two largely shine working together on 12 Songs. Mostly stripped down to acoustic guitars and keyboards, these dozen songs don't giveDiamond's baritone much room to posture or preen. This is clearly a testament to Rubin and the sympathetic supporting cast, which includes Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, Tom Waits sideman Smokey Hormel, and keyboard king Billy Preston. Especially powerful are the Brill Building pop confection "Save Me a Saturday Night," the piano stomp and slide-guitar frenzy of "Delirious Love," and an acoustic guitar and Hammond organ meditation, "Man of God." 12 Songs isn't perfect but this is the best Diamond album since his epochal Hot AugustNight.

First Rate

From a life long Diamond fan, "12 Songs" is up there with the best of them, and I'm only 30! I can't wait to hear what's next!

12 songs is a so good

Oh Mary, Hell Yeah, Save Me a Saturday Night, and Man of God are all first rate. Right up there with the best of Leonard Cohen.

Wow

A Neil Diamond fan since 1973 or '74, I've revelled in the high points ("The Jazz Singer," "Tennesse Moon"), enjoyed the average moments ("Serenade," "Three-Cord Opera") and dreaded those low points ("Up On The Roof") – and I was nowhere near prepared for "12 Songs." Diamond wrote some of his best songs ever to put out his best album ever. Credit Rick Rubin, true, for bringing this album about, but credit Diamond's songwriting and singing as well. To say there isn't a weak song here is an understatement; any of these songs could have (and should have) been a hit, and there should've been a ton of award-nominations (and wins). Spend a little extra for this "extended" version - the demos and alternate takes are worth it. I'm glad to know Diamond and Rubin are teaming up again - maybe this time I'll be ready for what they produce. If it's anywhere near as good as "12 Songs," it'll easily be Diamond's second best album ever.

In a career that began in the 1960s, Neil Diamond became a major recording artist, an internationally successful touring act, and a songwriter whose compositions produced hits for himself and others. His earliest recognition, in fact, came as a songwriter associated with the Brill Building era of Tin Pan Alley in the early '60s. But he soon branched out into recording and performing, and by the early '70s was topping the charts with the self-written singles "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Song Sung Blue."...
