iTunes Review
The Indigo Girls’ live album, 1200 Curfews, showcases the duo’s grassroots charm. Their voices have always beautifully intertwined, but their appeal has always been more than that simple combination. It’s their earnest love for the simple act of singing and playing, their lack of music star attitude, and that sense that they’d be just as comfortable singing around a campfire as headlining an arena that’s made their fans feel that spiritual bond. There are plenty of rough edges left in here to keep things grounded and real and both the rougher, darker Amy Ray and the sweeter, folkier Emily Saliers assert their very distinctive personalities. The highlights from their own career are on full, spirited display (“Joking,” “Least Complicated,” “Closer to Fine”) alongside the songs of their personal heroes: Joni Mitchell’s “River,” Buffy Sainte-Marie’s “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee,” Neil Young’s “Down by the River,” and Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue” as well as the classic “Midnight Train to Georgia,” a soul tune these Georgian folkies couldn’t pass up.

The Many Shades Of Indigo Girls
If you've never been fortunate enough to see Emily&Amy in concert, then this is the next-best thing.(and if you get the opportunity,go!!!)I've seen them twice, and listening to this recording takes me back to those times."Down By The River"is incredible, they revisited Neil again with"Rockin' In The Free World",not to mention"Wooly Bully"at one show I saw!!There are so many highlights here,I'll point out only a couple."This Train Revised"is powerful with gut-wrenching lyrics, much better than the studio version."Wounded Knee"is fierce and still socially poignant."Mystery"is such a sweet but slightly melancholy love song, with Emily in fine voice."Joking"is such an infectious,up-tempo number, perfect choice for a show-opener."Galileo",with the comic banter setting the stage for this true classic,is a perfect example of the interplay between them and their audiences.See them live...your ears will thank you!
The best live album since Seeger.
I bought this album when it came out back in ’95. I liked the IG before I had this double disc, but ever since 1200 Curfews I freaking LOVE them. There are some songs on here that have meant the world to me over the last 12 years. One thing you can hear throughout – besides Amy and Emily’s impeccable showmanship and awe-inspiring musicianship – is two incredible artist just having a blast doing what they do. Their signature “Thanks y’all!” can be heard during the applause after many of these songs. The banter between the girls and a couple in the front row with a sleeping child before “Mystery” is charming, and somehow makes an already beautiful song even more moving. The folksy “Back Together Again” and the rowdy “I Don’t Wanna Know” are simple, tasty treats. The rockin’ “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” reflects the IG support of Native American causes, and the live versions of “Closer to Fine” and “Galileo” are fun must-haves for any IG fan. However, there are two cover songs on this album that lift it from being just another live record to being a religious experience. The first is Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue”, which is just an incredible tour de force performance from beginning to end, with a funky breakdown in the middle that is solid gold. The second cover song – the very best song on this album – is “Midnight Train to Georgia” with Gail Ann Dorsey. There must have been magic in the air that night, because somehow the recording equipment captured something special. There was a beautiful energy on the stage in that moment, and you can hear it. I’m telling you, it will send chills down your spine. Those of you that have seen IG live know the feeling I’m talking about.
Great Live Album
The best thing about being an IG fan is seeing them perform live! Now that I don't have that opportunity for various reasons, having this live album is the next best thing. I love hearing my old favorites in a new way - Love's Recovery with saxophone is awesome - Closer to Fine is always a treat, can't listen to that and be in a bad mood afterwards - Ghost is PERFECTION - and since I don't have all of their newer albums, I've enjoyed getting to know some of the newer songs and the covers on this album.
