iTunes Review

Right from the opening instrumental intro, it’s apparent that Brandon Schott is one of those Angeleno troubadours who was raised on Beach Boys albums like Pet Sounds and Surf’s Up. “Annie” opens Schott’s 13 Satellites with the timeless whimsy of classic carnival music. He trims the tune with baroque pop accents like glockenspiel, horns, pump organ, woodwinds, marching drums, and some of the most lilting four-part vocal harmonies since the Wilson brothers rolled two-inch tape. Yet by the following “Early Morning Night,” Schott takes lead vocals to infuse the song with his own breathy tones. More Ben Folds than Brian Wilson, “Full Circle Round” is anchored to a prominent piano that’s orbited by junkyard percussion, acoustic guitar, sleigh bells, and more of those heavenly harmonies. Although vintage-sounding Mellotron, kazoo, tuba, and vibraslap give “Satellite” a Sgt. Pepper's vibe, Schott’s clever interplay between lyrics and melody make for something that perfectly balances retrospection with innovation.

13 Satellites Come Crashing Down...Earthlings Rejoice!

I came to know the music of Brandon Schott after I purchased his Christmas song "Winter In The Sun" in 2010 right here on iTunes. Since then, I purchased and got into all of his albums..."Release", "Golden State", "Dandelion"....and I have become a big fan of his work. So it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to this brand new album. It was more than worth the wait. "13 Satellites" is one of those albums that is so satisfying, and a true musical event when listened to from the first track right to the last. Each song is crafted so well and flows nicely into the next. Each song on this album is a treat....who doesn't break into a smile when the whimsical "Building A Boat" effortlessly preludes the title track, "Satellite". If you are a fan of The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Emmitt Rhodes or Brian Wilson / The Beach Boys, then you owe it to your self to get "13 Satellites"...an album everyone should be looking up to the heavens for!

What A Way To Relax

I fell in love with this record while driving home from work on a rainy, traffic congested night. No, I'm serious. I was all ready to lay on the horn, yell a few choice words and have my blood pressure skyrocket. But then the gentle "Annie" came on and by the time the (appropriately, if obviously titled) "Outro" faded away, I was home and I felt considerably better about life. It's a little bit of George Harrison, the Beach Boys, and mellow California troubadours that result in a percussive, rhythm driven record, which is shocking considering there isn't a full band or drum kit on any of the tracks. Like the many old-school influences Brandon uses, this album is a repeat-listen to discover all there is to find. It's worth it though. And did I mention it lowered my blood pressure?
