Album Review

Suitably grand in scale and far-reaching in its scope, this soundtrack is the first new music from Vangelis since 1990's The City. 1492 stands up well next to Vangelis's classic Chariots of Fire, due to his innate ability to get right inside the material and provide an integral part of the film itself. Vangelis succeeds in capturing the 15th-century mood, mixing rich choral portions with modern elements, and portraying the larger than life character of Columbus, complete with full-range, dynamic sound. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats, Rovi

FINALLY!

As a biased 20+ year Vangelis fan, 1492 Conquest of Paradise is most assuredly Vangelis' greatest movie score. The tracks "Conquest of Paradise", "Light and Shadow/Deliverance" and "Eternity" rival any of the greatest musical scores in movie history from such great composers as Bernard Herrman, Philip Glass, John Williams and Hans Zimmer. I applaud iTunes for having an almost complete Vangelis collection; however, most noticeably missing is his best album, DIRECT.

Classic

1492-has lasted the test of time with me. A must have for any collector of sound tracks.

Vangelis and Spirojazz

What is it with Greek composer-keyboardists?? Vangelis is still great, but Spirojazz seems like he's taken Vangelis way beyond what was going on in the 80's and 90's--and married it with jazz, funk and electronica. I can hear Vangelis in there definitely and listening to this record reminds me of how influential he is.

Best known for his lush, Oscar-winning score to the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, Vangelis was among the most successful and admired electronic composers of his era. Born Evangelos Odyssey Papathanassiou in Volos, Greece, on March 29, 1943, his nascent musical talent was recognized at an early age, but he refused to take piano lessons, instead teaching himself. After high school he formed the early-'60s pop group Formynx, soon the most popular act in Greece. After achieving superstardom at home, Vangelis...
