iTunes Review

James Brown was far more than a performer of unparalleled abilities; the hardest working man in show business was also a savvy entrepreneur and a visionary who fashioned a far reaching musical empire in his own image, drawing on the talents of some of America’s finest musicians and singers to create an entirely new brand of music from the skeleton of fifties R&B. The spasmodic cries that Brown belted forth on “Please, Please, Please” set the template for Brown’s entire career by privileging impassioned minimalism and rough shod syncopation over coherent melodies and chord progressions. Brown’s early R&B rooted work with the Famous Flames is well represented here, but serves mainly as an appetizer for the pummeling funk that Brown and his collaborators would perfect in the second half of the sixties. It’s difficult to overstate the importance of singles like “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag”, “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and the epochal “Cold Sweat,” to recapture the strange and inspiring musical possibilities once suggested by these now familiar tunes. 20 Greatest Hits is a vital point of entry into the career of one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.

Before There Was Prince...

For anyone not familiar with his work, this is a great place to start. James is the greatest R&B/Funk singer. All the later R&B/Funk acts that followed are indebted to him. Too much to recommend here, but certainly lend an ear to "Give it Up or Turnit a Loose", "The Payback", "Cold Sweat", "Super Bad", and "Get up Offa That Thing". Most definetely worth your time and money.

stop complaining people!

ok, well first off, this is a great album, james brown is the greatest funk player ever. secondly, these people that are complainging about it being raised to 9.99 are being a bunch of idiots. 9.99 is a GOOD price for the ammount of songs here, and there good. stop whining, the average price for an album is this much, and this has twice the number of songs on it. great album, buy it!

"Soul Brother Number One," "the Godfather of Soul," "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Mr. Dynamite" — those are mighty titles, but no one can question that James Brown earned them more than any other performer. Other singers were more popular, others were equally skilled, but few other...
