Album Review

Like any record company worth their salt, MCA knows a good gimmick when they see it, and when the millennium came around — well, the 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection wasn't too far behind. Supposedly, the millennium is a momentous occasion, but it's hard to feel that way when it's used as another excuse to turn out a budget-line series. But apart from the presumptuous title, 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection turns out to be a very good budget-line series. True, it's impossible for any of these ten-track collections to be definitive, but they're nevertheless solid samplers that don't feature a bad song in the bunch. For example, take the Who's 20th Century volume. Yes, there are some great, great songs missing, but what's here (with the possible exception of "Squeeze Box") is terrific, including "My Generation," "Happy Jack," "I Can See for Miles," "Magic Bus," "Pinball Wizard," "Behind Blue Eyes," "Who Are You," "Join Together," and "Won't Get Fooled Again." Serious fans will want something more extensive, and neophytes would be best served by more well-chosen collections, but this disc is quite entertaining, considering its length and price. That doesn't erase the ridiculousness of the series title, but the silliness is excusable when the music and the collections are good.

This compilation is mediocre even for casual fans, get "Ultimate Collection" instead

The reason I awarded this compilation 1 star more than it deserved is because the music that's on here is excellent, but that's the problem - there isn't enough music on here to do the Who justice. As I said, each one of these ten songs is great. However, they are not the ten best songs the Who has ever done. I understand that this compilation is geared toward casual fans, but ten songs? Come on, you can at least do a little more than that. Whoever designed this compilation obviously does not understand that the Who is a band that has created conceptual masterpieces, brilliant albums, and they've certainly had a lot more than ten hits. If you must have just ten songs, I would still not choose these. Of course, to truly listen to the Who, you need a lot more than just ten songs. To be a true fan, you should have the albums: Quadrophenia, Tommy, Who's Next, The Who Sell Out, and Live at Leeds are just a few of the great albums this band has made. If you are a casual fan who wants to start with just a compilation DO NOT GET THIS ONE. Get one of the following BETTER COMPILATIONS instead:
"Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy" - The Who's first (and arguably best) compilation focuses entirely on the Who when they were a 60's singles band, featuring 14 singles from 1965-1971. Even if you choose to get all the studio albums, you'll still want to pick this one up to get all the non-album singles. Not available on iTunes, but can be easily found at stores like Best Buy.
"My Generation: The Very Best of the Who" - For those of you who want a more expansive single disc compilation that focuses on more parts of the Who's career, this fits the bill. Again, not available on iTunes but can be found at stores like Best Buy.
"The Who: The Ultimate Collection" - This is the one I would choose. With 2 discs and 35 songs, this one has everything on "Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy", "My Generation", and "20th Century Masters". Available on iTunes and in stores.
"Then and Now! 1964-2004" - Another larger single disc compilation with 20 songs and a tracklist almost identical to "My Generation". The advantage to this one is that it features 2 new songs as well. Available on iTunes and in stores.

Only reason I give it 3 stars is..

It's incomplete. I mean, these all rock, but if they can't include Baba O' Reily on it, what's the point? That's one of The Who's BEST! Why's it not on here? But, other than that, these are all awesome songs.

Won't get fooled into not buying this album

I bought this album for real before I had an ipod. It took almost a whole year for me to cut down on listening to this album. It was my first The Who album and I am a huge The Who fan, and anyone else who is a The Who fan out there is a friend of mine. All this album needs is Baba O'riley and it would be one of the best albums from The Who. So "Join together" and take the "Magic bus" to the buy album button. THE WHO ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Few bands in the history of rock & roll were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notoriously intense live performances demonstrated. The group was a whirlwind of activity, as the wild Keith Moon fell over his drum kit and Pete...
