Album Review

Like any record company worth their salt, MCA knows a good gimmick when they see it, and when the millennium came around, the 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection wasn't too far behind. Supposedly, the millennium is a momentous occasion, but it's hard to feel that way when it's used as another excuse to turn out a budget-line series. But apart from the presumptuous title, 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection turns out to be a very good budget-line series. True, it's impossible for any of these brief collections to be definitive, but they're nevertheless solid samplers that don't feature a bad song in the bunch. For example, take Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' 20th Century volume — it's an irresistible budget-priced summary of their prime Motown recordings. There may be a couple of noteworthy songs missing, but many of their best-known songs are here, including "The Tracks of My Tears," "Ooo Baby Baby," "The Tears of a Clown" and "I Second That Emotion." Serious fans will want something more extensive, but this is an excellent introduction for neophytes and a great sampler for casual fans, considering its length and price. That doesn't erase the ridiculousness of the series title, but the silliness is excusable when the music and the collections are good.

The English Beat? This Must Be A Joke!!

by califmud

Tears of a Clown was released by Smokey and The Miracles in 1970. It is one of Smokey's signature songs. It was written by Smokey. His real name is William, check the song credits. Smokey and many Motown artists are highly loved and respected in England. Many English bands cover Motown artists out of love and respect, as did the English Beat. I was there in the 80's, I know. I hate to admit it, but right now I am looking at a picture of me and Boy George arm and arm. Yikes!! Nothing but respect to Smokey and this album!

The English Beat

'Tears of a Clown' was originally a song by the 80's Two-Tone ska band The English Beat. Nothing against Smokey or anything but their version is better I think, the rest of his music is good though.

Go Smoke!!!!

As a big fan of 50s, 60s, and 70s music, this album was like heaven to me!!!! I would often hear my dad BLASTING this CD, as well as "My Girl: The Best of the Temptations" and wonder if he'd lost his mind; now I understand his madness. This CD is TERRIFIC! It's filled with the Miracles' biggest hits, and it also includes two of Smokey's solo hits ("Cruisin'" being my favorite). Smokey is just as smooth as BUTTAH on "More Love" and excites you with "Mickey's Monkey". Claudette (Smokey's lovely wife) is clear as a bell in the background and compliments him well. I'm tellin' ya, this CD is a must have for any 60s or Motown fan. If you like silky soul music, you'll LOVE this compilation!

If you're looking for the all-time number one purveyor of mainstream romantic soul, Smokey Robinson may well be the man, in the face of some towering competition. With the Miracles in the 1960s, he paced dozens of tuneful Motown hits with his beautiful high tenor. As a solo performer from the 1970s onward,...
