Album Review

The Contours were Motown's most rockin' group. Known for their wild stage antics and raucous songs, their big hit was the deathless "Do You Love Me." That good-time oldies staple plus ten other tracks are included on this collection. The Contours had no other hits, but "First I Look at the Purse" gained some fame when covered by the J. Geils Band. The original is a solid rocker, as are other tracks like "Shake Sherry" and "Can You Jerk Like Me." A couple tracks feature the group trying to update their sound in an attempt to be more Motown; "It's So Hard Being a Loser" and "Just a Little Misunderstanding" sound like labelmates the Temptations. This collection replaces 1999's The Very Best of the Contours, which had 15 tracks. If you have that already, you certainly don't need this new compilation, as there are no songs that are unique to it. In fact, there is really no reason for this collection to exist — The Very Best of the Contours was just fine; cutting four tracks off and repackaging it as part of 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection does no one any favors. If you want the best of the Contours, hit the used CD stores and ask for The Very Best of the Contours.

Motowns Other Stars

Maybe not Motown's biggest stars but the Contours do bring a different sound to the Detroit sound. Had they had a combination of talented writing and producing to complement their singing talent, this group could have been a major pillar to the Motown empire. Let's not forget though, that one member of this group did manage to make a name for himself. Dennis Edwards replaced the Temptations lead singer, the immortal David Ruffin, and helped Motown win its first Grammy award with the smash hit "Cloud Nine" and would lead the Tempts with other hits such as "Runaway Child Running Wild" "Psychedelic Shack" and many other hits. However the Contours were a very talented group in their own right mind; too bad we didn't get to experience more soulful hits from this group.

Not "One-Hit Wonders" in my town

Are you kidding? The Contours were everything in my town. But then I grew up outside of Detroit. At least five songs on this batch were No1 or close to it. I never realized how lucky I was.

The Contours are widely remembered for their 1962 smash "Do You Love Me?," one of the early hits that helped put Motown on the map. Yet they aren't always associated with their contribution to the label; they were one of the roughest, hardest R&B groups Berry Gordy ever signed, and their sound simply didn't resemble the smooth, sophisticated blueprint that later became Motown's trademark. Nor did their stage presence; in contrast to the slick choreography and wardrobe of Motown's signature artists,...
