iTunes Review
Though he made his greatest impact as an anxious young man leading the mod-influenced Jam, Paul Weller has never stopped exploring the music’s history while pushing forward with touches of jazz, folk, Brit-Pop, and soul. With 22 Dreams, his expansive 2008 collection, Weller celebrates his 50th birthday with a panel of star collaborators, from Blur’s Graham Coxon and Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, to Soft Machine’s Robert Wyatt and Noonday Underground’s Simon Dine (who co-wrote a handful of the tunes). Stylistically, Weller jumps all over the genres, beginning things as a British folksinger with “Light Nights” before breaking out the band for the title track. He hits the piano for the lonely soul ballad “Invisible,” turns jazz singer for the nightclub spaghetti western drama of “One Bright Star,” turns in a number of Curtis Mayfield soul-inspired tunes (“Have You Made Up Your Mind,” “Empty Ring”), tributes jazz pianist Alice Coltrane with the funky swamp-noir instrumental pulse of “Song for Alice,” adds some dance beats for “Echoes Round the Sun,” and recites some mystical spoken word (“God”). Weller’s a genuine renaissance man.
Customer Reviews
Wow! Thanks again Paul!
Good lord- it almost isn't right that so much talent resides in one human being. Paul Weller is living proof that there is no reason for musicians to lose it as they get older. He constantly challenges himself to grow, and challenges us right along with him. This record is already a classic and isn't leaving my iPod anytime soon.
SOLID GOLD! BRILLIANCE SHINES THROUGH...
Paul Weller has taken all the musical knowledge he has gained from his early days of the Jam through the present, intertwined them with his vast array of musical influences, and tied them together with the most substantial array of musical arrangements since Pink Floyd and Van Morrison. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! His best work EVER!
Not a rocker yet timeless
The first eyepopper is that you get 22 songs for less than 10 dollars. It is too early to say that this album will make the top ten list of almost every music critic. Mr. Weller is so confident in this album that he weaves a tapestry of influences that rush at you in a cascading aural crescendo. My favorite song? Black River, for now. Do yourself a favor and purchase this gem of an album. And while you are buying this one buy Wildwood.
