Album Review

Inspired by everything he saw and absorbed on the supporting tour for Dreamland, 23 AM is Robert Miles' atmospheric plea for uniting together saving the earth from the excesses of man. At its core, it's an ambient album, filled with spacy, synthetic textures, repetitive keyboard lines and sound effects. Miles uses ambient as a foundation, and he often spins off into dance-club tracks where divas (either Kathy Sledge, Nancy Danino or Barbara Prunas) sing his humanistic lyrics. There are interesting ideas throughout 23 AM, but they're not always executed well — often, the ambient interludes are meandering and the vocal tracks are colorless — but there are enough interesting moments to make the album of interest to any fan of Dreamland.

Don't compare to Dreamland...

I don't think it's fair that other reviews compare this album to Dreamland; They're really two separate entities. Dreamland is a collection of songs, mostly trance, some of which are fantastic and some of which are simply mediocre. 23am is more like a symphony where each of the movements flow together, yet lack a common theme. The album starts very ambient and works into upbeat techno, and culminates with the pinnacle, hard-techno track, Full Moon. This is one of my all-time favorite electronica albums. Dreamland is nice, but it's not even in my top 50.

Compared to Dreamland...

(3.5 stars if I could) Robert Miles has some good ideas throughout this album but he doesn't always get lucky. He takes a step to the side of Dreamland where some of his songs have lost their trance-like properties. This is the true bridge between Dreamland and some of his later work. Some good songs are Freedom, Enjoy and the hands down best song this album- Maresias. Even if you don't look at the rest of the album, buy it. It is one of the best melodic trance songs I’ve ever heard.

Takes a little getting used to, but you'll love it.

While being a huge fan of Robert Miles, 23 AM has a lot to offer musically. It's piano- driven melodies and ambient new age vocals makes a great follow- up to Robert Miles previous album Dreamland. Now in its entirety, it is a bit different than Dreamland as far as music goes. It provides vocals on some tracks likes "Everyday Life" and "Freedom", which are by far some of the best tracks on this album. Now as before, Robert Miles attempts to make elements of its predecessor of Dreamland, which is a great career making move for any up and coming artist. I personally recommend this album for music fans to listen to after thoroughly listening to Dreamland.
