Album Review
Six years after their semi-hyped Starbucks-sponsored stab at breaking out of the independent ghetto, Antigone Rising re-emerge with a slightly different lineup and a much slicker sound on 2011’s 23 Red. Here, the group — now a quartet, down from a quintet — abandon any pretense of rocking and settle into richly harmonic soft rock, equal parts Fleetwood Mac and Dixie Chicks, with accents of Taylor Swift and Sheryl Crow. 23 Red has a patina of rootsiness, just enough to suggest Antigone Rising isn’t manufactured, but the album is decidedly smooth adult pop, as heavily produced as it is melodic. It’s almost old-fashioned in its celebration of songcraft and reliance on immaculate production, and its throwback nature is a large part of its charm: this is an album that does not play by the rules of 2011, it’s the kind of classicist pop that sounds like it could have been released some 10, 15, even 35 years earlier. And this is the crux of Antigone Rising’s appeal, but also their Achilles heel: they make sweet sounds out of time, so it’s hard for them to exist within their own. But for those with a taste for well-crafted Californian soft rock, 23 Red will be quite satisfying.
Customer Reviews
23 Red! We have a winner!
In today's world of auto-tune, song writing factories, and big, flashy marketing, it is all too easy to stare right at the diamond in the rough, without noticing it. Do yourself a favor, take the time to cut through the weeds, and find the diamond that is 23 Red. Rich with talent, the women of Antigone Rising bet it all on this CD, and we're all winners for it!
Founders Cathy and Kristen Henderson, along with long-time drummer Dena Tauriello are joined by new lead singer/guitarist Nini Camps to bring us the latest, and greatest incarnation of Antigone Rising. Although this is their first studio recording together, they have been touring and performing together for several years. They're friendship shines through as they blend their sounds together to serve us the vast and eclectic menu that serves up love in many variations. No Remedy serves us lost love, while Everywhere is Home serves us pure, true love. Borrowed Time is a healthy serving of love for our children, and Breaking Me is the desert hesitance of new love. And in Pink Sunglasses, a song that should be sent to the department of tourism, we're served a piping hot serving of NYC love.
Having seen the band perform several times over the past few years, I wasn't expecting any surprises from these song, but was I wrong. Repeatedly I found myself thinking, "Wow! I've never heard THAT before!" Never was it as obvious as it was with Breaking Me. This version has Nini sliding over into the passenger seat and Dena drives this song as her beats bring it all to life.
That the Henderson sisters have kept this band alive through a mulitude of cast changes is a testament to their dedication to making good music. 23 Red proves that their dedication was not misdirected, or mispent.
Do yourself a favor, bet your music dollars with the Women of Antigone Rising on 23 Red. Guaranteed winner.
A must have !
There is no way you will regret buying this CD ! An all female rock band that is a cross between Stevie Nicks, Mellisa Ethridge and many other well known groups. A band to keep your eyes on, they are going places and for them, it's straight to the top. I highly recommend you give them a try if you've never heard them.
23 Red Rocks!
This album is defining my summer. Both catchy and meaningful... you'll find yourself singing one song after another for days on end! Even my kids are singing along :). Already looking forward to the next album...but we'll be loving this one til then! (And if you haven't seen them live, I highly recommend that as well.)
