iTunes Review

The Icelandic electronica outfit Gusgus got a fair amount of attention when it released its 1997 debut, Polydistortion, which is still probably their best work. Gusgus — more of a multi-media collective than a band when it started out — now consists of three members: Biggi Veira, Daniel Agust, and President Bongo. On 2009’s 24/7, the group works a pretty clearly defined patch of techno turf. The opener, “Thin Ice” sounds like slow-motion dance music in a mysterious dream. At one point, the groove shifts up to a medium tempo, and there is a sense of melancholy and danger as Agust intones, “I feel like dancing / on the thinnest of ice.” Things remain edgy on “Hateful.” This time Agust sings, “I’ll hit you where it hurts you / if you force me to my knees,” over a hard house beat. The best cut, “Take Me Baby,” features the distorted, appealingly low-and-slow vocals of the Finnish lounge-meets-techno artist Jimi Tenor, who also wrote the track. The lyrics are as simple as “Take me baby /Take me now” but Tenor’s odd, slightly sleazy performance is riveting.

They do it again!

I have been a fan of gusgus since their debut release. Each album has always pleased me. Although their earlier work was more pop oriented dance, I prefer the chillout electronic vibe of Forever and this is just a further extension of that will airy vocals filtered throughout. Definitely recommend it.

Textured, Deep and Brilliant

6 songs in 50 minutes - you know its gonna be an epic ride. But this isn't your regular rollercoaster of dance beats like their last LP "Forever", gone on Earth and the other female vocalists and Daniel Agust returns for full vocal duties which give a darker and sexier ride. The songs carry a lower BPM but the deep dance house feeling is no less fulfilled. The synths are thick, the voice is perfect and the beats work. Well worth the wait and I can't wait for multiple listens to enjoy this sonic masterpiece. The first single Add This Song gives a quick glimpse of the style of this LP. Thanks, guys!

Awesome

For a week now, it's my gym album, going to work and getting ready for a night out! Every single song has soul behind it, except the song Bremen Cowboy! Maybe too deep for the universe to figure out! Or just for the people in Bremen city, Germany. Overall it's awesome!

Biography

Formed: 1995 in Reykjavik, Iceland

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Being a quirky nine-piece co-ed band from Reykjavik, Iceland, GusGus were almost bound to inspire comparisons to the Sugarcubes, though a different decade caused the group to inherit the influences of electronic fuzz and trip-hop rhythms rather than the bout of post-punk lunacy that inspired the Sugarcubes during the late '80s. Formed as a cinema collective in early 1995 by filmmakers Stefán Árni and Siggi Kjartansson, the group was gradually expanded to include musicians such as DJ Herb Legowitz...
