Album Review
Love him or hate him — and that really does seem all there is to choose from — 3 Balloons finds novelty songster Stephen Lynch on a roll, keeping the quality high even when the formula is the same it has been for the past decade. "Waiting" is quintessential Lynch style as it starts off believably wistful and searching and then does a complete 180, becoming depraved and somewhat vicious. The song's chamber music arrangement is clever but it's the sudden switch to mocking AIDS testing that will drive the more prudish away. Those same people should also stay away from the songs that devolve into subjects such as children being "a*****es" ("Fishin' Hole"), cocaine being smuggled by anus (the title track), and unhealthy obsessions with breasts ("Hallelujah"). Sick humor aficionados, however, will thrill at the way "The Ballad of Scarface" works the film's "Her womb is so polluted" line into the lyrics, and the four "Dear Diary" interludes — all from tragic historical figures — will seem like manna from heaven. "It doth resemble Fidel Castro eating a London broil!" is a lyric from "Medieval Bush," and that's all the info you need to decide if 3 Balloons is the album for you.

STEPHEN LYNCH ROCKS!!
Stephen Lynch is the world's best singing comedian, bar none! His new album has all the zany antics fans have come to expect, as he hits you over the head with his potent punchlines after mesmerizing you with his melodic voice. The song topics are great, the lyrics even better, and it is recorded in a studio with other instruments besides his trademark acoustic guitar, giving it a real work of art appeal. And if you miss the campy audience reactions of his previous two albums, go see him live when he comes to a venue near you; it will be the best night of your life!!
What a horrendous studio album
I'm a giant Stephen Lynch fan. I've introduced his last 2 albums to countless friends, and even had tickets for his upcoming tour before I heard this CD. But I'm sorry, this is an awful effort from him. Where his last CDs were performed live, showcasing his hilarious interaction with the crowd, this CD is strictly studio material (with the exception of A History Lesson - the one saving grace for this CD). And when he played live, he used to really rock, and the listener could feel him jamming on his guitar and belting out the songs. The lyrics to the old CDs were hilarious, but the music was enjoyable too. On 3 Balloons, the guitar is faint and uninteresting in the background, while he sings softly in a high-pitched voice over it. It's frankly very boring. The lyrics aren't even very clever, and losing the sounds of the crowd reaction has hurt him as well. I've been a big fan for years, but to be honest, this CD is just unimpressive. Buy A History Lesson, then go listen to his last two CDs - You'll be much happier.
Lynch's worst
I loved Stephen's first 3 albums but to be honest this one was disappointing. Guess it's not fare to compare it but even on it's own I'd only give 3 stars. 5 star albums are thrown around too easily, should be a 10 point rating on all reviews around the internet. But still some funny tracks like Midevil Bush and History Lesson
