Album Review

This band's debut CD has a few flaws; song titles like "I am Jack's Smirking Revenge," "Save the Cheerleader," and "The Big Bad Wolf" do them no favors, and album opener "Project Wakeup" is a rote screamo track that in no way reflects the awesomeness to follow. They should have stuck it two-thirds of the way through 3D, where no one would notice it, because almost every other song on the disc is more interesting and more appealing, even the ones with dumb titles. I See Stars have a keen melodic sense; the choruses on "Comfortably Confused" and "The Common Hours," to pick just two, are hypnotic and memorable. But it's the music on the album that catapults this band out of the pack. Their combination of seriously booming drums (that go back and forth between hard rock thunder and disco hiss-thump-hiss-thump), chiming guitars, and zapping, humming synths creates a sonic bed atop which the vocals float — even when they're not filtered through Auto-Tune and vocoders like the band is aiming to become some bizarre combination of Thursday, Coheed and Cambria, and Daft Punk. Oh, and there's a guest appearance by Bizzy Bone (of inexplicably popular 1990s rapper/singers Bone Thugs-N-Harmony) on "Sing This!" All this genre-hopping might seem like it would just create another ungainly mess not unlike the works of 3OH!3 or Hollywood Undead, but I See Stars are talented songwriters whose youthful goofiness will likely fade by album number two, leaving behind only the hooks and lyrical skills that make 3D such a shockingly impressive, and fun, debut.

An Impressive Mix

First of all, does anyone else want to punch the person who wrote the iTunes review right between the eyes? That was ridiculously cruel... But overall, I See Stars is a great new band with lots of potential- espically the screamer/synth player, Zach. His screams are so strong for his age and remind me of a younger Mike Hranica. If you're not sure about this band, just listen to The Common Hours and What This Means to Me. Eventually, the whole album should grow on you if your into this type of music. They also put on a fantastic live show.

A Very Solid Debut

I See Stars, along with Broadway, are two new bands that I think will be great in their own way. I See Stars gives you the feeling that you have heard music that is similar to this but it still finds a way to be original, most likely because they do it better than anyone has in this genre yet. I like to compare I See Stars to some of those pop bands with electronica, a Forever the Sickest Kids with balls. They have the cookie cutter chorus' but aren't afraid to use some talent.
Project Wakeup- They succeed on their project, this is a fast song that is to the point. One of the best songs on the CD 9.5
The Common Hours- Features a pretty harsh scream at one point that I didn't care for but also has some catchy parts as well 7,5
3D- If you want to introduce someone to the band, this would be a good song to select, great chorus and great breakdown at the end, not surprising that it was their second music video 9.5
Save the Cheerleader, Save the World- This would be a cool Heroes reference if it weren't for Heroes falling like Enron after the first season. Regardless, decent song, the intro is a bit long cuz it does get repetitive 7.0
The Big Bad Wolf- This song is catchy and transitions very well with what appears to be 2 different chorus that switch places at the end. Love the drum beat in the verses 8.5
I Am Jack's Smirking Revenge- Another really solid song, has no screaming until the very end. Like the chorus a lot and the drum fill that is repeated in it 8.5
The Ocean- Ironically, it reminds me of an ocean, crazy right? A catchy if somewhat pointless interlude. As far as interludes go though it is good
Comfortably Confused (I like the alliteration and oxymoron in the title)- There is no screaming in the song and this would probably be considered the inevitable "slow song" that is required on all rock songs. I like the bridge a lot and double bass in a slower song can either make it or break it and in the case it makes the song 8.0
Where The Sidewalk Ends- This is also one of my favorites, it gets to the point quickly and once again offers some very catchy parts. A complaint is that the breakdowns always seem to come at the end, and besides that the songs are structured in unique ways that make them each stand out 9.0
Sing This! One has to wonder what they were thinking with this one. I get that they want to prove they can cover other genres but this song is autotuned into oblivion. Singing this is the last thing you will want to do 3.0
What This Means To Me- The first music video and for good reason, it once again gives a good preview of what the band is about. Arguably the catchiest song on the CD and we now know that it means a lot to them 9.5
Overall- This isn't one of those reviews that gives all 9's and 10's, but it also isn't one that deserves many bad scores. My main complaint is that this is a very short album, with a one minute song and 3 others well under 3 minutes. Also, on their next CD I would like to see some tempo changes whether it is slowing it down with just an acoustic guitar or piano (like AWOL by Broadway), or even speeding up the tempo, Sing This! doesn't cut it as that one song that mixes it up. This is a refreshing take on electronic rock and I See Stars will be big and is the kind of band that will have a huge following of committed fans. Their cover artwork also really suits their music in my opinion which is what the artwork should accomplish. As my title suggests, this is a very solid debut that I love coming back to every once in awhile.

I Love I See Stars

I See Stars is awesome! i've loved these guys for almost 2 years! they're the next best thing! the album review itunes gave is whack! there are no flaws, and no dumb song titles. project wakeup is just as awesome as the rest of the album. I See Stars will not fade by album #2. 3-D is only the beginning for a great band and these guys will be around for a long time.
