Thirty Three Threes

I remember when these guys were just starting out. They hadn't quite developed a sound, or even what kind of music they were going to play. I remember their first show at Chain Reaction in Anaheim and how unsure their music sounded. I remember them going through a revolving door of drummers, guitarists, singers, MC's, ect. You could always tell they had passion and talent, but didn't quite know what to do with it. Well, it seems that band is no longer with us, because the latest offering from Thirty Three Threes is a truly original Reggae/Rock/Ska/Punk/Hip Hop/Metal album that exceeded any expectation I had from these gentlemen.

Just the fact that I have trouble defining a genre for these guys is indication that you are hearing something unique. Every song offers something different and special. From the opening riff on "The Choice is Yours", you can't help but put a smile on your face and sway along. While there are some great Reggae/Ska jams on this album (Highlights for me being "All I Mean, Everything, Everything" and "Everyone"), that isn't all these guys are about. Songs like "Samurai Song" and "Big Dirty" are guaranteed to get you on the dance floor, and my personal favorite, "Rebel Without Applause" will have you rocking out in your car big time. "Dinner With The Damned" is really the only lul in the album I can think of, but that may have more to do with being placed in between 2 of the strongest tracks on the record than the song itself.

Now, some of the best material on the album is not in the aforementioned skanktronic/rock-the-hell-out category, but instead more of somber ballads, designed to offer a great contrast to the records more upfront songs. These songs mostly take place on the 2nd half of the record, and is where the band really displays its songwriting chops. "Something Like A Prayer" has a hypnotic guitar line that really puts you where Thirty Three Threes want to take you. It is followed up by My favorite song on the album, "Kill the City Lights". With a build up that sends shivers down the spine, you can't help but daydream about better times when it is pulsing through your headphones. To close out the album you have the one-two punch of "To A Friend" and "Asleep At The Wheel (Forgiving Dreamers)". The Former consisting of just guitar and heartfelt lyrics about lost friendship, the latter being a lighter raising worthy ballad fit to close the album.

Throughout the album you are taken on a journey. One of fun and pain, good times and bad. It takes craftsmanship to produce something that can contrast styles the way this album does but make it flow nearly without a hitch. The band I saw at Chain Reaction 2 years ago is dead, and like a phoenix rising from the ashes, they are made wholly better for it. A Truly great effort that has me excited to see what comes next.

These guys are amazing!!!

Seen a couple of their shows and have been waiting anxiously for this album since they started working in the studio. They have a unique ability to blend sounds and genres that blows most bands outta the water. This finished product is awesome! Keep it up guys!
