Album Review

Matt Johnson's idiosyncratic series of records has been matched over time with an equally in-its-own-place collection of singles, and 45 RPM is a handy and sometimes revelatory compilation of many of Johnson's best moments in his various incarnations. Much of his music can be seen as both of its time and blatantly reacting against it, often resulting in a fascinating tension that at its best is really distinct music and at its worst can be flailing. Generally speaking it's more the former here, though some songs like "Sweet Bird of Truth," with its all too stiff yupfunk undercarriage not quite letting Johnson's snarling vocal work as it should, don't connect. The highlights, though, are predominant — the almost winsome jangle of "Uncertain Smile," the vicious lust/AIDS metaphor "Infected," the snarling jump and jaunt of "Armageddon Days (Are Here Again)," and Johnson's most underrated single, "Love Is Stronger Than Death," are four standouts among many. His Hank Williams tribute is only represented by "I Saw the Light," but that alone has to rank as one of the most unique and yet still honestly affectionate covers of that song yet. Both "Uncertain Smile" and the sparkling but still harrowing "Perfect" are the original single cuts, while "This Is the Day" comes from the Disinfected EP and three closing cuts — an alternate "December Sunlight," "Pillar Box Red," and "Deep Down Truth" — appear for the first time. The limited-edition two-disc version is the one to hunt down thanks to the contents of that second disc — eight remixes of various singles (including a couple not on the main disc itself, like "Gravitate to Me"). As good as "Infected" is, it's the 12" version that's the real monster. About the only misstep is the lack of anything from the debut Burning Blue Soul, but hopefully a planned second volume will cover that among other things.

While we are waiting....

It is highly recommended to re-discover or discover a compilation of two decades of genious intelligent innovative (pop)rock, in the enigmatic style of Matt Johnson, the main force behind The The. The smart, critical and poetic lyrics are thought provoking and the beautiful music is timeless. You may not remember the name, but I know you'll enjoy The Beat(en) Generation, again.

I saw Matt Johnson and Johnny Marr at Warfield in SF

One of the best concerts in my life..!!! TheThe are one of the best bands and Im gratful to have seen them now here comes the fun part I had redeemed over $90.00 in gift certificates…60 of the dollars were gifts and $30.00 were my own that I bought at Costco. I redeemed them all and began to gift music to my friends and family including my niece who received a $300.00 touch for xmas. A couple of days later, I noticed they had gone into my checking account and had debited all of those gifts as well as used my “itunes money” I have been on the phone for HOURS dealing with this as they tried to figure this . I have over 21 pages of purchases, I added up just the first 8 pages, and it came to $1284.00. Out of 21 pages of purchases, I have spent that $1284.00 on Apple Inc and I have been treated like they could care less. They have now told me that this is considered “regifting” and it is not Ok to use itunes certificates to give apple music and video gifts. Even though if you go to Costco and purchase the certificates yourself to save some money you are not allowed to gift music to your friends and family with those certificates. They are slowly refunding the money back to me because the account I have is in San Francisco and I live in Maui so its not like I can just go to an ATM and put money into my account to cover any charges coming through. They are doing this for me since I live so far from my bank not because its good customer service or its actually their fault. This is over $135.00 and Ive gotten back I think maybe 47.00 so far and its been over a week. Im done with Apple. They’ve passed their prime.. I was a huge Apple fan and I know how their customer service works but this is beyond belief. Be careful when you are gifting people music and you are using itunes money….

Totally Absolutely AMAZING

This is WONDERFUL. My top 5 Favorite songs are: 5. #1, 4. #18, 3. #3, 2. #17, 1. #16.

The The was the guise of Matt Johnson, a mercurial singer/songwriter whose music ran the gamut from dance-pop to country. Born August 15, 1961, in London, Johnson was raised in the flat above his father's pub, the Two Puddings, a haven for well-known celebrities and criminals; he also became exposed to music at the nightclubs and dancehalls owned by his uncle, where he saw performers like Howlin' Wolf, the Kinks, and Muddy Waters. Johnson formed his first band, Roadstar, when he was 11; at the age...
