Album Review

Shinedown is the latest rock combo to be signed out of Florida (in this case, Jacksonville) since the popular explosion of Creed and, to a point, Limp Bizkit. Shinedown has much more in common with the former on its Atlantic debut, Leave a Whisper — in fact, there's little on the album that doesn't have something in common with another group that listeners have heard before. The layered harmonies of Alice in Chains dominate the set, which musically is cousin to post-grunge types like Saliva and Puddle of Mudd. Brent Smith's vocals fall somewhere between Glenn Danzig and Layne Staley. He also channels Aaron Lewis for a little of that heavy band balladry on "Better Version" (sample lyrics: "...Caught a glimpse, but the reflection's only mine"; "It's almost like I'm paralyzed"). Elsewhere, chunky guitar riffs establish Shinedown as a capable hard rock band. "Left Out" and "In Memory"'s thundering power chords fade to chorus-channel dynamics in the verse, making room for more blustery lyricisms about personal pain, relationship woes, and other "boy, is life sucky" stuff — essentially, the same set of issues that seemingly all of these post-grunge rockers rant about. Coupled with a two-dimensional sound (sound number one: heavy! Sound number two: brooding!) which varies little from song to song, let alone from the sound of its peers, Shinedown's debut offers some hope that heavy music will right itself from the nasty stumble of its last few years. [The album's bonus track edition featured acoustic and multimedia material.]

The Sound of Madness by Shinedown is my favorite Rock Album, but Leave A Whisper is my favorite Shinedown Album. It is unique, it doesn't sound like mainstream rock and I love all the songs. Every single one. Now Shinedown hasn't been, well, great with their lyrics, but these are very good. The rythm's of the songs and the overall sound is awsome. And there are 12 of these songs to boot, who can beat that! I first listened to the Sound of Madness, and was hooked, found this album and wow. It's amazing. Every single song could be your favorite, don't go by the iTunes popularity bar, every song is good. Let me just rate each one:

Fly from the Inside - It's okay, a good opening song. 8.5/10
Left Out - Good song, nice album filler. 8.2/10
Lost in the Crowd - I like this song, nice rythm and vocals. 9/10
No More Love - Underrated, very good. 9.1/10
Better Version - Another underrated song, like this one better. 9.3/10
Burning Bright - I love this song, good vocals and guitar. 9.6/10
In Memory - Other than "45", this is my favorite song on the album. 9.9/10
All I Ever Wanted - Another good song, just not up to par to some. 9.2/10
Stranger Inside - Good song, I love the chorus. 9.5/10
Lacerated - Good song again, pretty dramatic song. 9/10
Crying Out - It's okay, nice filler song. 8.7/10
45 - FANTASTIC!!! I <3 this song! Amazing, powerful, and sad at the same time. 11/10

Overall, this album is one you can listen to over and over again without getting tired of the songs, I've listend at least 100 times to each song, and still love them. You can not call yourself a Shinedown fan without purchasing this album.

Recommended Tracks:
