iTunes Review
This 1974 release, his first studio album in four years (and first since kicking his heroin problems), announced the arrival of a new Clapton: desperately trying to shed his guitar-god reputation, he emerged as a more polished, more focused mainstream rocker. Sure, there are still a number of blues covers and ample six-string wizardry to be found here ("Motherless Children," "Steady Rollin' Man"), but there's also a laid-back, easy flow. Clapton's own songwriting ("Give Me Strength," "Let It Grow") showed a newfound emotional maturity, and his cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" (amazingly, a chart-topping single) found him expanding his musical horizons. 461 balances Clapton's guitar mastery, songwriting skills, relaxed vocals, and refined taste as well as anything he's recorded.

Bluesy Excellence
The Itunes Review accurately describes this wonderful album, though it is strange that "Motherless Children" was ommited from itunes. Highlights (other than the song that was left out) are I Shot the Sheriff, Let it Grow and Mainline Florida. Definately check out this and other (early) Clapton Albums if you're into classic rock.
One of Slowhand's Best Solo Albums
Eric Clapton's first really critically acclaimed solo album after his long venture through various bands (The Yardbirds, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominos) ended was 461 Ocean Boulevard. A bit like the music he did during other bands he was in, 461 Ocean Boulevard is created out of a fusion of reggae (Which Clapton himself had been getting into around this time), blues rock, and hard rock. Also, there's great songwriting involved as well as a couple of cover songs. His overrated (But unbelievably highly praised) Bob Marley cover, "I Shot the Sheriff" is on here. He also covers "Willie and the Hand Jive" and a few others. But all of those great elements aren't the only reasons his 461 Ocean Boulevard album is so great and has been looked upon as one of his best works (In fact, a deluxe edition of this album has just been recently released). It flows greatly, and each song runs under five minutes (So it's not too long but not too short). Also, it has some great playing. The opener "Motherless Children" (Perhaps inspired by his family life in his childhood?) and closer "Mainline Florida," especially, contain some great guitar solos. And that drumming excellent, too. So, there are so many great things about 461 Ocean Boulevard. No one has really gotten a full taste of Clapton's work until they've heard at least one solo album, and this is most likely his best. Just get it. You won't be disappointed. Recommended Tracks: "Willie and the Hand Jive" "I Shot the Sheriff" "Let It Grow"
I Can't Hold Out...
...when I'm not listening to Clapton! This is one of his earlier albums, and still one of the best. I Shot the Sheriff can be a real shocker if you're used to the Bob Marley version, but it's still a great song. Get Ready, Let It Grow, and Steady Rollin' Man are my favorites. This CD is a must-have for any fan of Clapton.
