When in doubt, play Scofield!

The orchestration and perfect blending of sonorities is something I've come to expect for John Scofield. When he plays with a small horn ensemble or Medeski, Martin and Wood, or just the 'A' team (Stewart and Swallow) he is so tonally mixed in, it's hard to identify until he jumps out from the other players. Then jumps right back in to the mix... ensemble player again.

But this album takes it to whole new level. ('Twang' is a perfect example. The compete horn parts, all from just him.) Full orchestration of some favorite small band tunes. His calling upon his Scotts heritage is not something most identify with in his music. I find it one of the things that has made him stand out from some of the more monotonic or acrobatic players that, somehow get the the DB awards, year after year. I find this thoughtful, melody-based writing far superior.

We used to say, back in the day 'when in doubt, lay out'. Later changed, as we became better players to, 'when in doubt, PLAY out'. John is the king of this philosophy and in my opinion, owns the genre.

Always refreshing and trying something musically and sonically new. A musical treasure.

Thanks John!

Scofield and 53 others, nice

What I like about this recording is the way Mendoza took Scofield compositions originally recorded with a small band and blew them up into a whole new dimension by adding strings, brass, woodwinds and what ever else he put in there. I would like to hear more collaborations from Vince and other guitarist. Some might not know since Vince is know for his arranging skills but he is also a hell of a guitar player.

Best Scofield's album ever!!!

Comparable to Pat Metheny "Secret Stories". A must have in your Scofield collection. Well done!

One of the "big three" of current jazz guitarists (along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell), John Scofield's influence grew in the '90s and continued into the 21st century. Possessor of a very distinctive rock-oriented sound that is often a bit distorted, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, fusion, and soul-jazz. He started on guitar while at high school in Connecticut, and from 1970-1973 Scofield studied at Berklee and played in the Boston...
