Album Review
Guitarist Lee Ritenour decided to celebrate the year of his 50th birthday by inviting a bevy of name guitarists into the studio to jam out some tunes, all in the name of love for their chosen instrument. Ritenour's subsequent album, 2010's 6 String Theory, is just that, a varied celebration on the many styles and players who have utilized the guitar. The result is an expansive, ambitious, but never belabored album that touches on jazz, blues, funk, and rock and expands beyond the usual Ritenour approach while remaining true to his own unique six-string sound. To these ends, Ritenour duets with such artists as contemporary bluesman Keb' Mo', fusion/post-bop legend Pat Martino, and blues icon B.B. King, as well as George Benson, Slash, Mike Stern, and others. To say this is an all-star affair is an understatement and fortunately, while the album never overplays to expectations, it nonetheless delivers on Ritenour's promise of a guitar celebration.
Customer Reviews
This is why I love iTunes.
So I'm just cruising through iTunes, looking for new music....and found this. Absolutely spectacular. Absolutely pure music with impeccable musicianship, featuring a wide variety of guitar sounds.
Thank you Lee Ritenour. Wonderful work. You have a new fan!
Rit is back, and someone turned the volume up !
Good Night Nurse ! How long has it been since we've been allowed to hear Lee let it loose and rock out !? The supporting cast is without compromise in any way (I've always had a soft spot for Luke, not in a gay way, of course) This album will certainly go down as an instant classic for Lee. Of course we've enjoyed his tribute albums and reprieves through classical and beautiful latin grooves but, this ain't no tribute to someone else.
His beautiful melodies remain, even through the distortion. It'll be a pleasure to watch his trademark smile as he plays these tunes in concert. What a ride, thanks Lee !
(Get the impression that I really like this album?)
a who's who of guitarists
I don't write many reviews, because most music these days just isn't worth the effort. I can't even remember the last time I enjoyed an ENTIRE album, and I don't know about any of Ritenour's other albums, but this record is awe inspiring. The songs capture emotion vocally and instrumentally. The performances are consistently creative and inspired, regardless of the style of music. The record features a who's who of guitarists, ranging from Slash to Robert Cray and each plays like their career depends on it. The recording quality is first rate- clear, crisp and spacious. If you love guitar oriented music, I can't imagine not having this in your collection.
