iTunes Review
Those who know China Forbes from the cosmopolitan combo Pink Martini might be caught somewhat off-guard by her solo project ’78. It reconnects her with the smart, catchy pop sounds first heard on her 1995 album Love Handle, though this effort shows more poise and polish. Forbes positions herself as a cerebral singer/songwriter along the lines of Aimee Mann and Sheryl Crow, a connection emphasized by former Crow sideman Gregg Williams’ presence as producer. The album’s tracks are sparsely furnished in contemporary style, surrounding Forbes’ coolly yearning voice with slide guitars, electric piano and subdued touches of electronica. Her probing lyrical touch is well displayed on “One Less Word,” “Can’t Be Wrong,” “ and ”I’m Still Talking to You.” Tracks like “When This Is Over” (a collaboration with the Go-Go’s Charlotte Caffey) and “Time On My Hands” are crisp and hook-laden. She descends into brooding interior monologues during “You Were/I Was” and “Easter Sunday” and surfaces for a sans-glitter remake of the Pink Martini favorite “Hey Eugene.”

Something is missing...
I've been a big fan of China and Pink for several years now, but I'm not as impressed with her solo work. I feel like something is missing from this album...both musically and lyrically. Pink brings with it a synergy, unique and exotic. I didn't get that feeling from '78. It sounds more canned and I agree, a little like Sheryl Crow. I'll continue to support her solo efforts, but give us something fresh, something unique!
Lead Singer of Pink Martini steps out!
just great music. I love China's work with Pink Martini and am so glad that it brought her to my attention. This CD is lovely song-writing and simple pure singing. It reminds me of The Sundays and a lil but of some Sheryl Crow - but mainly of China Forbes. Not much like any of her Pink Martini stuff - but just great. Download the single "78" now - its AWESOME
What a snooze
It's not that it's bad, it's just so uninteresting. One would think that after years of playing with a creative force like Pink Martini some of it would rub off. Apparently not.
