iTunes Review

Back in the early ‘90s, Black Sheep were on top of the world, catching burn on radio, MTV, and countless dancefloors with insta-classic smash singles like "The Choice Is Yours," "Strobelite Honey," and "Flavor of the Month." Then their second album dropped, and even though it was still pretty decent, the fickle rap audience had moved on. Fast forward 15 years or so, and, like many of their peers, Black Sheep have re-emerged, doing occasional concerts and putting out new music through obscure indie labels. Black Sheep 2.0 is really just Dres, whereas Mista Lawnge, who produced much of their legendary debut, is doing his own thing solo (look for his 2006 CD The Class of 89 released as Mr. Long). Despite the cryptic album title, 8wm/Novakane is definitely worth a listen, as Dres still flips the cocky/slick verbals, set to jazz-heavy beats provided by Vitamin D and Showbiz. "Wonder," "Shorty," and "Be Careful" are standouts.

The past ten years, while yielding a fair amount of legitimate material, have for the most part produced remarkably stale hip hop products and artists when compared to the two decades before. Economic pressure in the music industry seems to propel this; people will seemingly buy anything these days. So, in a seller's market, why would businesses opt to produce quality over quantity?

I myself stopped defending hip hop as an art and a culture a long time ago. That doesn't make me a sellout; I just didn't believe in the product any more. Think about it: Supporting hip hop artists simply as some sort of partisan effort--that's selling out.

Dres and Lawnge's comeback gives pause to that notion. Suddenly I feel as if there's hope. Perhaps the creative drought can be over. Perhaps today's kids will hear the same things I heard fifteen years ago and like what they hear.

If hip hop had a Bauhaus, its instrcutors would surely include Dres, Lawnge, and the rest of the Native Tongues, (along with Prince Paul and KRS-One, if I'm running it). The Sheep's third album promises to bring back the magic and creativity of a decade ago and prior.

what a great year

If u can ignore the tons of garbage from radio this year, like Yung Joc and Young Dro, this has been one terrific year.Ice Cube came back, Busta, Jedi Mind Tricks, Rhymefest, Lupe Fiasco, Strange Fruit Project, Obie Trice, Boot Camp Clik, the Jugganotz, LLoyd Banks, Ras Kass, Skyzoo, and many more all dropped this year. And now Black Sheep has returned. It does my heart warm to see them back.I can sleep easy tonight

Whodat? Black Sheep is back!

It took 15 years but Dres and Mr. Lawnge are back in action. True hip hop fans will love this album which is reminiscent of their earlier material. Great beats and lyrics to bounce your head too. Their new single "Whodat?" has a funky horn loop and flowing rhymes that will run a tingle down your spine. A definite must have!!!
