Frank Marino’s unapologetic love of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar sounds didn’t break boundaries, but it did showcase some incredible musicianship. “I’m Going Away” opens to reveal a man playing for the pure fun of plugging in, turning up, and rocking out with pure abandon. Sure, the tune heavily echoes “Crosstown Traffic,” but it could be argued that if Marino had tried to cleverly disguise his Hendrix worship, Mahogany Rush would have been compared to Cream. The following “Man at the Back Door” intersects his Electric Ladyland–inspired leads with wah-wah clavinet that’s more saturated in Stevie Wonder–esque funk, while “Jive Baby” makes good use of twin guitar harmonies and unpredictable sideways rhythms. Throughout Mahogany Rush IV, various Mellotron flourishes can be heard, especially on the mellow bluesy ballad “It’s Begun to Rain.”
