Growing's 2010 album, now created by a trio (tape looper/"vocalist" Sadie Laskin became a permanent member in 2009) continues in the danceable vein the group gradually veered towards over the course of the '00s. Less meditative than 2008's All the Way, PUMPS!  is marked by strong noise rock and psychedelic elements amid club-friendly techno beats. In place of the overwhelming volumes of their early material, Growing folds in actual funk and the result is a band evolving far beyond their beginnings. For better or for worse, fans of the band's first records (and live shows) will be hard pressed to identify this as the same people. It's as if Growing has learned how to say what they have always been saying, but in an entirely different way.
