Shields: B-Sides

Shields: B-Sides

After the success of Grizzly Bear's fourth album—2012’s Shields—the band issued an expanded edition of that album with eight additional tracks, as well as this standalone collection that features just those extra tracks. The three remixes alter the original songs to varying degrees, with the Lindstrom remix of “gun-shy” moving the track's new wave–to–prog sounds into a disco-lite feel and the Nicolas Jaar remix of “Sleeping Ute” breaking the song into outer space. But it’s the previously unheard tracks recorded in Marfa, Texas, that should be most interesting to fans. They've likely read about those “disappointing” sessions but will hear that there’s nothing wrong with what the band came up with—and that sometimes Grizzly Bear's music can be more intriguing in the early stages than its fully actualized state. “Taken Down” and “Will Calls,” in particular, are the songs fans know but with arrangements that cut closer their core.
