Heavy Electrics

Heavy Electrics

Now based in Los Angeles, Neil Rudd is the Englishman behind Eat Lights Become Lights, and his affinity for the pioneering motorik grooves of bands like Neu! and Can pulses proudly through his music like a well-oiled piston. Distorted guitars spiral and coil against icy digital backdrops, while synth notes flutter and blink with anxiousness and dread or with playful lightheartedness. Tucked in between the more abrasive, relentlessly propulsive tunes like "Bound for Magic Mountain" and "Runners" and the blissed-out, accelerated drones of "La Kraut III" and "Carousel" are tracks that explore several territories in their stretches of eight or 10 minutes: the meeting of Krautrock austerity with psychedelia and art-rock experimentalism on tracks like "Terminus IV" and "Sunrise at Marwar Junction" results in wonderfully mind-bending pieces. Along with the racing "La Kraut III," the song "Heavy Electrics" is a glistening standout, a tune built with the same trance-inducing guitar work that made The Clean's "Point That Thing" such a beautifully mesmerizing song. Heavy Electrics is a conduit of the highest order.
