The Bootleg Series, Vol. 7: No Direction Home: The Soundtrack (A Martin Scorsese Picture)

Rarities, discoveries, and in-concert landmarks fill the soundtrack of Martin Scorsese's documentary covering Bob Dylan's early years. Among the surprises is a 1959 home recording of a soft-voiced Dylan singing "When I Got Troubles." Another highlight is a version of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" that rings like a conversational tribute to both its author and its subject. Of course, Dylan's turn toward electric rock 'n' roll is well-represented here; a menacing alternate take of "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" demonstrates that rock and Chicago blues were the man's music as surely as any ancient ballad. The set climaxes with the 1966 "Judas!" take of "Like a Rolling Stone." The majesty and threat conjured by Dylan and The Hawks remain awe-inspiring.
