iTunes Review

The Drive-By Truckers are such experts at their musical game of punk rock-bred alt.country that even when they write off-the-cuff, in the studio, it sounds as if they’ve been rehearsing and rewriting for weeks. A Blessing and a Curse is their sixth studio album and, allegedly, was written primarily during the sessions in order to capture the serendipitous energy. Their trademark three guitar crunch is as loud and raucous as ever and singer Patterson Hood can jerk a tear from your eye when he mellows out and allows his voice to break. With three schooled and able songwriters, the material is learned and diverse. Newest guitarist Jason Isbell contributes “Easy On Yourself,” the album’s catchiest track, while Hood evokes the ramshackle spirit of the Faces and their loose and limber groove for “Aftermath USA.” Guitarist Mike Cooley retools the Rolling Stones’ 1974 ballad “Till the Next Goodbye” for his equally affecting “Space City,” where these southern boys take a hit of glam. Less ambitious than some of their previous concept albums, taken song by song Blessing is quite a formidable set.

Customer Reviews

Their worst beats most bands' best

But this is by far their most disappointing work. It just feels like they're half phoning it in, half making an ill-advised attempt at a commercial hit. 3 stars for Gravity's Gone, Space City and ...uh, that's about it. Luckily for us, their next album is quite the comeback. Still, this is better than most stuff out there, just not up to the high bar DBTs have set.

The Return of ROCK

A five star masterpeice. If you are a fan of DBT or just a fan of rock this is a must have. Highlights of the album are gravity's gone, aftermath usa and goodbye.

Long live Cooley

The Drive-By Truckers are the best kept secret in the music business. Their song writing is on a completely different level. I can't get enough of this band... Long live the Truckers!!!

Biography

Formed: 1996 in Athens, GA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Boasting a mix of Southern pride, erudite lyrics, and a muscled three-guitar attack, Drive-By Truckers became one of the most well-respected alternative country-rock acts of the 2000s. Led by frontman Patterson Hood and featuring a rotating cast of Georgia and Alabama natives, the band celebrated the South while refusing to paint over its spotty past. History, folklore, politics, and character studies all shared equal space in the Truckers catalog, which offered up its first blast of gutsy, twangy...
