All day long Kenny's melodies play in my head, even if I haven't listened to the album in days. Especially A Canary's Song. Dang catchy Kenny Ray! Very uplifting and fun. Good choice to do a bluegrass album. HPLJ

This ain't your granny's bluegrass record!

If someone were to ask me to sum up Kenny Ray's new album in just a few words, those words would be: "Just buy it!" Sounding much more akin to the Nashville Bluegrass Band and New Grass Revival than to Flatt and Scruggs or Bill Monroe, this album dares to push the boundaries of bluegrass music while still maintaining a healthy respect for the heart of the music. The eight songs penned by Kenny Ray (as well as "A Canary's Song") are brilliant, yet perhaps a bit TOO lyrically sophisticated for the typical bluegrass listener. Just be prepared to listen to the album a few times through before you "get it" on every song. On the other hand, the Bonnie Raitt cover "Papa Come Quick" is a fun bluegrass race-to-the-finish, while the Pat White instrumental "SOS" is a fast, bouncy, Irish-type melody that will have the pickers pulling out their axes and the listeners tapping their toes. So, with all this praise, why only four stars? Simply because I know the next album will be better. This is Kenny Ray's first venture into the bluegrass world and there are a few freshman follies. While the album is great as a whole, there are times when a divide is felt between Kenny Ray's country roots and the band's bluegrass experience, leaving certain parts dynamically flat. With time and a new album, I know that these minor hiccups will be ironed out. In the meantime... "Just buy it!"
