Album Review

Producer Brown Bannister and A&R director Brent Bourgeois seem to have been going for diversity in putting together a Point Of Grace Christmas album. Among the 17 songs in 14 tracks are traditional carols, popular evergreens, and five new compositions. The older songs are given lush, shimmering arrangements sometimes so different from the familiar versions that they are unidentifiable until after the lyrics have kicked in. The quartet of singers, sometimes augmented by choirs, does vocal acrobatics around the tunes, finding fresh and interesting interpretations. They have more fun with the pop songs, such as a big band swing rendition of "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" and a gently rocking "Jingle Bell Rock." The originals contain no new standards, but provide an opportunity for the individual singers to get solo lead vocals. The most surprising of these is Bourgeois's "Light Of The World," on which Michael Tait sings lead, with Point Of Grace providing only backup vocals. Fans of the group's regular releases are likely to welcome this typically eclectic seasonal collection.

Beautiful Christmas

This is a stellar Christmas effort. The women of POG along with producers and musicians have crafted a wonderfully versatile record of new and familiar Christmas songs and carols. Through creative artistry they take old favorites like O Holy Night and Carol of the Bells and make them original with new vocal arrangements. One great achievment is they present new songs (One King, Light of The World, Emmanuel) in such a way that they make them feel like classic holiday tunes. The tracks Santa Claus is Coming To Town and Jingle Bell Rock are fun and and lighthearted. They bring some old yet more unfamiliar songs to the table with Coventry Carol and How Great Our Joy. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise are the the opening and closing tracks. When Love Came Down is an exciting and sweaping song that immediatly captures the listener. Not That Far From Bethleham is a beautiful closing ballad that brings the entire effort together. This is a wonderful holiday recording that provides a great background for a beautiful Christmas.

One of the best out there.

This is a great album, and partly because it's so different without being too extravagant about it. Their version of "Angels We Have Heard on High" is my absolute favorite, as well as the rest of the traditional songs being absolutely stunning. And their originals are great too, especially "One King". Ever since this album came out, it's been one of my absolute favorite Christmas songs. I always can't wait to listen to this one during the Christmas season. :)
