Over the years, Darrell Scott has proven himself an exceptional singer/songwriter as well as a guitarist of formidable skill. A Crooked Road offers two discs’ worth of his folk and country-rooted tunes, with Scott handling all the instruments as well production duties. His burly voice conveys a bruised sort of strength, helping him to bring out the poignancy within “Love’s Not Through With Me Yet,” “Colorado,” and “Oh Sweet Longing.” His painterly lyric style displays an old-fashioned grace in tunes like “The Open Door” and the title number. Moving beyond matters of the heart, he flashes a fierce anger at injustice in “The Day Before Thanksgiving,” and the stinging “Snow Queen and Drama Llama” gives vent to Scott’s blues-rock instincts. A scattering of cogent, luminous instrumentals (including the bubbly “Some Other Time” and the slightly baroque “Pester Lester) reveal yet another side to his talents. “This Beggar’s Heart” closes the album on a poignant note. A Crooked Road is the work of an artist at the top of his craft.

Absolutely incredible
Darrell Scott is the single greatest singer-songwriter I have ever heard. And this is his best album yet (VERY close second place is Reel-time). He has a really raw and honest sound, great melodies, compelling lyrics, AND all the instruments are played by Darrell. BUY IT NOW!!!
Beautiful music!
Darrell's previous release is a collection of covers entitled "Modern Hymns". "A Crooked Road could easily be called the same. This is an amazing piece of work - flawless playing & compelling poetic lyrics. This is music that truely moves me!
DRL at his finest
Sometimes great performers' work gets mistranslated onto record, the soul and energy from a live set not quite trapped onto tape. This never seems to be the case with Darrell. His musicianship and voice speak through the speakers just as they do from the stage. A Crooked Road probably feels most like a live Darrell show out of his last few albums. How more people haven't "discovered" Darrell is beyond me. As a fan for years, the best I can do is introduce as many people as I can to this musical treasure while he is still in our midst. Spend an hour with this album, dig into his earlier works, find a local theatre where you can experience first hand a live Darrell Scott show. You will not be disappointed in either. Happy listening!
