Album Review
"I ain't got no sob story to write," Kate Voegele admits during A Fine Mess, a seasoned album that owes much of its success to One Tree Hill. After joining the show's cast in 2008, Voegele tackled the recurring role of Mia Catalano — essentially a televised, aliased version of herself — and used the opportunity to promote her own songs, many of which were woven into the episodes' plotlines. It was an invaluable introduction to an established TV audience, one whose affinity for photogenic actors and heartbroken drama neatly dovetailed with Voegele's music. Sales of her album appropriately spiked, and Voegele returned to the drawing board soon after, looking to strike while the iron was hot. Released in May 2009, A Fine Mess proves to be a fairly veteran production, performed with radio-minded gusto by the songwriter herself and, once again, promoted by a semi-biographical storyline on One Tree Hill. Voegele doesn't stretch her boundaries on these nine songs — despite posing with an acoustic guitar in the album's liner notes, she only strums it during "Manhattan from the Sky" — but she does write the material herself, helming the bulk of the tracks on her own and partnering with outsiders on two numbers. Despite those two collaborations, Voegele's own songs are the strongest ones here, particularly the alternative rocker "99 Times" and the breezy, Nashville-influenced "Talkin' Smooth." Her voice is similarly competent, perhaps a bit commonplace in its soulful inflections but agreeable nonetheless, and producer Mike Elizondo highlights the melodies with tight, tasteful arrangements. The only hang-up, then, is the fact that A Fine Mess isn't messy at all; rather, it wields the same combination of saucy strut and well-scrubbed pop/rock that we've heard on previous albums by Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, and the like. That's good company for most aspiring songwriters, of course, but Voegele may need another few albums to distinguish herself from her predecessors. [A deluxed edition with five extra tracks added was also released.]
Customer Reviews
a fine sucess!
I am a huge Kate Voegele fan and have been waiting for this album for months. Every song i have reviwed was listened to all the way through multiple times before i made these judgements. well here it is, my review, song by song: 1) inside out: i like this song, its probably one of the best on the album. very similar to some of the songs on Don't Look Away. 8/10 2) 99 times: Probably my number one favorite on A Fine Mess. i love the beat and the lyrics are amazingly catchy. 10/10 3) who you are without me: amazing song, yet again! this album is starting out very strong! again, very similar to Don't Look Away tracks, especially Devil in Me and Might've Been. 10/10 4)angel. pretty good. worth downlading if you like Kate want to enjoy as much of her music as possible, but not exceptional. 6.5/10 5) sweet silver lining. reminds me a lot of It's Only Life, a song which i never liked. not very good, in my opinion, but its a single, and if you like It's Only Life. 3/10 6)playing with my heart: has a nice folksy vibe and a good beat. great to sing along with, however not quite up to Don't Look Away's standards. listen before buying, its not for every Kate V. fan. 7/10 7) manhattan from the sky: my faverite song of all on this record! amazing lyrics, this song has been in my head ever since i heard the preview on one tree hill. buy this song, if none other! 10/10 8) talkin smooth: again, similar to Don't Look Away. good lyrics, but theres just something about this song that sounds awkward to me, and i cant figure out what it is. anyway, 6.5/10 9) lift me up: a nice, pretty slow song, not about love. its a nice counter to the more upbeat tracks on the album. 7/10 10)say anything: more of the same, but good lyrics. most Kate fans will probably enjoy this track. 7/10 11) unfair: so pretty! i love this song! 10/10 12)forever and almost always: another slow pretty song that complements Kate's voice gorgeusly. 9/10 13) playing with my heart (acoustic) wellll its the acoustic version, but basically the same as the first. 7/10 14) we the dreamers (demo): i love the lyrics! and this song really reminds me of the acoustic Devil in Me, i love the little moan she puts in her voice in these two songs. 15) inside out (acoustic). a slowed down version of the original. very pretty, but a little on the boring side. 7/10 must downloads: 99 times, who you are without me, angel, manhattan from the sky, unfair overall, its a great album, and i really recomend downloading the whole thing, you wont regret it!
A Fine Mess
This album is EPIC!! Kate somehow managed to write an album 10 times better than Don't Look Away. "Inside Out" - One of my favorites. This was a good song to open with. It's got a cool smooth pop sound to it, and the lyrics are nice. "99 Times" - This song has been stuck in my head since the first time I heard it. They picked a perfect single. I love the rock edge to some of Kate's songs, and her voice is perfect for it, as well as pop. "Who You Are Without Me" - There's a very cool string arrangement on this song telling a boyfriend to find himself outside of his relationship with her. "Angel" - Honestly, this is probably my least favorite song on the album, which doesn't mean much, because I'm addicted to it just like the rest! For One Tree Hill fans, it's along the same lines of the song "Halo" that Joy sang in season 3. Kate came up with very clever lyrics for this one. "Sweet Silver Lining" - Once again, Kate shows what an amazing lyricist she is. This is the most encouraging song I've heard in a very long time. She also shows her beautiful range. "Playing With My Heart" - Another very clever song. It's fun to listen to while driving. There's a rather interesting break after the bridge that is VERY cool. "Manhattan from the Sky" - We don't hear very many love songs from Kate, but this is one awesome. The metaphor she used is genius. "Talkin' Smooth" - I hate country music, but I love the country sound to this track. Kate shows that she could literally sing any musical style she wanted to and be amazing. "Lift Me Up" - I personally like both this version and the Olympic Soundtrack version, but this one a little better. They added a very lovely arrangement that compliments Kate's voice well. "Say Anything" - My absolute favorite song off of this album. This will appeal to the rock side of your music taste a bit more than the rest of the album. There's a pretty cool guitar solo in the middle and Kate shows off her vocal talent nicely. "Unfair" - Kate's voice truly shines when it's just her and a few stringed instruments. She once again scores with the lyrics as well. "Forever and Almost Always" - If this song doesn't break your heart, I don't know what will! I cried the first time I heard it. It's beautifully haunting and some of Kate's best work. "We The Dreamers" - Kate really went all out on the sadness for these bonus tracks, this one as well is very sad, but her voice brings an emotion to them that not many others in the industry today could. I recommend buying the whole album, but if you can only buy a few songs, I'd go with: Say Anything, Forever and Almost Always, Manhattan from the Sky, Inside Out, and Playing With Me Heart
Rating this 5 isn't enough...
Kate Voegele has done it again. This is by far the best album I have in my collection, and for good reason. Don't Look Away is amazing, but A Fine Mess... this blows her first out the water. I was drawn to Kate like many others: her One Tree Hill appearance. Hearing a few things from there, I knew I had to get her CD. It's been a while, but she's finally made another long-awaited album. This is one not to miss. Every single of her songs is perfect, from start to finish. I'm going through a breakup, and 'Say Anything' marks the situation perfectly. '99 Times', on the other hand, makes me glad the relationship is over. Kate is my rock. She is the only artist to help me through so many situations with her cleverly honest lyrics, her beautiful voice, and just the way of her music making my days go better. Thank you, Kate Voegele. You're a real inspiration. =]
