iTunes Review

You probably won't be able to love A Ghost Is Born on first listen; there's just a little too much noise, and not nearly enough pop hooks. But the more you hear Wilco's fifth album, the more it grows on you. The Chicago-based group is it would seem, America's answer to Radiohead (right down to its hits, misses and avant-garde sounds). Jim O'Rourke's production of this sprawling, experimental rock album is nearly perfect: Tweedy's numerous guitar solos have never growled better; you can nearly feel the warmth of those overheated, overdriven amps through your speakers. And, beneath some very Crazy Horse-moments, you'll find some genuinely great Wilco songs. Oddly enough (for this group), a keyboard drives some of the best songs here: "Hummingbird," "Handshake Drugs" and "Theologians." This Tour Edition contains four bonus live tracks

A Gorgeous Soundscape...

"A Ghost Is Born" could quite possibly be the most beautiful album you'll ever hear... but only after several listens. This album did for me what Modest Mouse's "Lonesome Crowded West" and Radiohead's "OK Computer" did so many years ago... changed my life. A monumental tribute to true musical quality. From start to finish, a masterpiece. 'Muzzle of Bees' is one of the most beautifully composed songs i've heard in years, both lyrically and musically. 'Handshake Drugs', 'Hell is Chrome', 'Theologians'.... incredible pieces of art. It's hard to pull certain songs away though. This is one of those classic albums you play from start to finish while driving down a deserted desert highway. Highly Recommended.

An astonishing follow-up to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

After listening to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot over and over and over again, I thought it would be impossible for Wilco to top that achievment, but they did. A Ghost is Born brilliantly takes up the charge from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, matching that album in intensity and musical complexity and raising the bar yet again. Each and every song reveals itself in your psyche like a great movie and resonates long after you've turned off your iPod or CD player and gone about your day. You find yourself thinking about the melodies or some lyric and you stop what ever you're in the middle of and want to hear the record some more. It's that good. Some of my favorites are "Theologians", "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" and "Muzzle of Bees". "Less Than You Think" is Wilco's idea of a joke, but it somehow manages to hold your attention despite its droning monotony. Discoverying a band like Wilco is a lot like falling in love -- you simply can't wait to get home to see them and revel in their company.

a gem of an album

personally, this album really speaks to me. i have found so much joy and sadness in listening to it, that i'm convinced that just about anyone can enjoy this collection of songs... in a time where music can be crunched together by machines with little trace of human involvement in its production, it is nice to hear music that sounds like musicians playing actual instruments (to reiterate another reviewer's sentiment). great music to listen to while driving, in a bar, with one(s) you love, or alone, this album is a must have. the first track, i think, speaks to the tone of the entire album, in that it showcases Wilco's ability to cruise from wallowing to uplifting, while exploring every note in between. this complexity is achieved by band mates that, taken separately, are amazing musicians, and when put together in a room, meld into one. take care, and enjoy.

Biography

Formed: 1994 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Wilco rose from the ashes of the seminal roots rock band Uncle Tupelo, which disbanded in 1994. While Jay Farrar, one of the group's two singer/songwriters, went on to form Son Volt, his ex-partner Jeff Tweedy established Wilco along with the remaining members of Tupelo's final incarnation, which included drummer Ken Coomer as well as part-time bandmates John Stirratt (bass) and Max Johnston (mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and lap steel). Guitarist Jay Bennett rounded out the...
