iTunes Review

A Kind of Magic is regarded as the unofficial soundtrack to the 1986 film Highlander, a tale of immortal Scottish warriors battling in modern-day New York. It’s not hard to see why the producers wanted Queen for the score. There were a lot of hard rock bands striving for majesty in the mid-‘80s, but none could match Queen, who practically wrote the book on blood-pumping songs with “We Will Rock You.” Songs here like “Gimme the Prize,” “Princes of the Universe” and “One Vision” are completely over the top, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t excellent battle anthems. There are also a few gauzy, floating ballads, but the real gem is “Pain Is So Close to Pleasure,” which didn’t appear in Highlander, but instead reveals Mercury’s love for classic Motown. Although Mercury’s health would undergo a sharp downturn following A Kind of Magic, the album features some of the most passionate singing of his career. Like the characters in Highlander, Mercury sings these songs not as a rock frontman, but as an immortal warrior.

This is A Kind Of Magic

This album is definately a work of art. Not only does it include tracks from one of the best 80's movies I've seen, but it speaks internationally through its song 'One Vison' and really shows a nice funky pop/rock sound in the title track. Truly breathtaking album.

I keep singing this album in my head

I keep singing this album in my head. One forgets just how great Queen was in its heyday, and "A Kind of Magic" reminds us how they were not just musicians but musical artists. No, not every song on here is a masterpiece like on "A Night at the Opera" and "Innuendo," but it is among my favorite Queen albums and their best movie soundtrack (sorry, "Flash Gordon").

Low point for Queen in the 80’s

This album is a mess. Much of the album is a soundtrack for the movie, “Highlander.” However a few songs are not in the movie, which leads to a CD that has no flow. It really sounds like the band is going through the motions on this one. The band recaptures its energy on The Miracle and Innuendo, which are highly recommended. However, for single song downloads, here’s a brief breakdown:

One Vision – 4 of 10 Stars - This song has high spots, but burns out easily
A Kind of Magic – 5 of 10 Stars - Ok and forgettable
One Year of Love – 6 of 10 Stars -It’s a nice little song
Pain is So Close to Pleasure – 3 of 10 Stars -No pleasure, only pain. Freddie seems to be singing high for the sake of itself
Friends will be Friends – 6 of 10 Stars - Another nice song. One of the better ones on the album
Who Wants to Live Forever – 4 of 10 Stars - So burnt on this song. Perhaps I’ve heard it too many times to give an unbiased answer
Gimme the Prize (Kurgan’s Theme) – 1 of 10 Stars - I hate this song so much.
Don’t Lose Your Head – 1 of 10 Stars - Very annoying song. Good as soundtrack to action, terrible in my stereo
Princes of the Universe – 6 of 10 Stars - A valiant attempt at ending strong. It’s a nice song, one to download

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Few bands embodied the pure excess of the '70s like Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal, as well as vaudevillian music hall, the British quartet delved deeply into camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen's...
