iTunes Review

To say it's impossible to convey the beauty and importance of this 1964 work by tenor saxophonist John Coltrane is both a truism and a cop-out. Words can do it justice, just not ours. But the fact is, this recording, made with Elvin Jones (drums), McCoy Tyner (piano), and Jimmy Garrison (bass), comes at the towering peak of Coltrane's abundant creativity. Everything he had done prior leads to this very disc, and everything he did after unravels his work in a cataclysm of experimentation. But for a session in December of 1964, time stopped for John Coltrane, and the jazz world would never be the same.

One of the basics

Even if you don't like jazz in general, if you are going to build a basic, sophisticated collection of music and want all the "must haves," this album (along with Miles Davis "Kind of Blue") belongs there. If you don't have it, get it.

A genius and his devotional suite.

I will be honest the first time I heard this great album, I was new to jazz and didn’t like it. I couldn’t understand all of the out of key soloing and loud intensity between the band. About two years ago I really got into Trane’s early recordings and decided to give this album another shot, I fell in love. I finally understood it, the key hear isn’t about being a perfect musician, it’s about being a sincere musician and this album is one of the most sincere albums I have ever heard. John William Coltrane was one of the best jazz musicians of the last century. He could solo for forty minutes all in the upper register, and his work is filled with deep passion. Despite popular lies he made this album free from drugs. He had a distinct musical vision and knew he could not achieve it when his mind was deluded by drugs. He gave up drugs and began practicing more then ever, and helped raise standards for being a dedicated Jazz musician. This album is one of my favorite jazz albums ever, but a word of caution if you’re new to jazz or Coltrane you may not get this right away. Defiantly give it a listen but don’t get turned off to Coltrane or jazz if you don’t like it. Just discover less complex jazz first, Duke Ellington, Milt Jackson, Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis( pre 70’s ), Bill Evans, Monk, Dave Brubeck, ect.

Best of Coltrane

Basically this album is the best that you can ask for from the enigmatic John Coltrane. Pretty much he is utterly amazing here. Well worth the 10 dollars for the 4 tracks, it is something you will listen to again and again. A must buy if you are at all interested in Jazz or American music in general. Also makes great backround music for a good cocktail/dinner party. Buy it, and enjoy every last bit of it.

Despite a relatively brief career (he first came to notice as a sideman at age 29 in 1955, formally launched a solo career at 33 in 1960, and was dead at 40 in 1967), saxophonist John Coltrane was among the most important, and most controversial, figures in jazz. It seems amazing that his period of greatest activity was so short, not only because he recorded prolifically, but also because, taking advantage of his fame, the record companies that recorded him as a sideman in the 1950s frequently reissued...
