Album Review

On True Colors, Cyndi Lauper began to edge her way into adult contemporary territory, but it was on her third album, A Night to Remember, that she concentrated all of her attention on becoming a self-consciously "mature" singer/songwriter. A Night to Remember doesn't always work, but not because she's incapable of performing polished, well-crafted middle-of-the-road material — "Time After Time" and "True Colors" prove that she could convincingly deliver ballads. Instead, the album bogs down because it assumes that labored arrangements and precisely detailed production are tantamount to musical sophistication. That said, there are some moments — such as the seductive "I Drove All Night" — that make a lasting impression, illustrating what Lauper was attempting to achieve with the record.

An underrated gem

During a television interview, Cyndi criticized this album as one of her weakest. With all due respect to the artist, I disagree. The upbeat tracks are catchy and the ballads never got the attention they deserved. Lyrically, I Don’t Want to Be Your Friend may be one of the best break-up songs ever written (and when Cyndi puts her vocals to it, it becomes even more heart breaking). Even after 19 years, this album remains one of my most played.

My favorite!

This is by far my favorite Cyndi lauper album. I have every CD by her, and this is the best. It is all really great songs, all with a powerful chorus. I have no doubt in my mind, if you are a full on rocker, concert pianist or a showtune lover (which I happen to be along with the rocker), you will love this album. It wont be a waste of money at all.

Vastly underrated, fantastic, Cyndi Album

This has to be my all time favorite Cyndi album. It seems that so many people dismissed this album and praise Sisters of Avalon. While SoA has a few great songs on it, I feel that Cyndi's strongest album from start to finish is A Night to Remember. Standout songs include: I Drove All Night, I Don't want to Be Your Friend, & Unconditional Love.

Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest stars of the early MTV era, selling five million copies of her debut album, She's So Unusual, as well as scoring a string of four Top Ten hits from the record, including the major hits "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time." Lauper's thin, girlish voice and gleefully ragtag appearance became one of the most distinctive images of the early '80s, which helped lead her not only to the top of the charts, but also to stardom. Throughout America, there were...
