As the son of Richard and Linda Thompson, Teddy has quite a legacy to maintain, and over four albums thus far Thompson has proven up to the task. His voice is more naturally musical than his dad's — and every bit as mournful as them both — and his musical decisions are rooted in his family’s folk history but not indebted to it. He’s now learning to smile as he delivers the bad news. A Piece of What You Need sounds like an optimist’s album. It’s filled with powerful, upbeat rhythms and melodies ready to take on the world with open arms (“In My Arms,” “The Things I Do”), but listen closer and the tales take a downward turn. That’s existential angst pinned under the cruising beat of “The Things I Do” and any tune with a title such as “Turning the Gun On Myself” comes with its own self-apparent warning. “Slippery Slope (Easier)” slowly marches with an inevitable weight and “Don’t Know What I Was Thinking” and “What’s This?!!” are well finished compositions worthy of any modern songwriter, with or without an esteemed family pedigree.

Fresh Rock for Fresh Days
I love every song off of this album. Teddy's musical style is amazing, is a mix of new and old sounds, and that's what makes this record really cool. Every song is well-written. If you're open-minded and like old rock and some beats this is for you, it is a little different from his past albums but that's exactly what makes "A Piece of What You Need" a welcome break from the old routine. I highly recommend this to everyone looking forward for a fresh day.
Teddy keeps getting better and better
If you are a Teddy fan, the best way to describe his new work is 'bigger'. Everything sounds bigger and more polished. You can tell he's honing his craft even more on this album. Too, there's a lot more variety here so you won't be reaching for this album to reinforce a back handed slap from life as you did with his former albums. That's fine with me as it means I'll be listening to this no matter the mood.
A PIECE OF WHAT YOU NEED
I have been a Teddy Thompson fan for years. I have turned all my family and friends on to him and they marvel that they hadn't heard of him before because he's so damn good. This album, I believe will change all that. Forget his DNA (extraordinary), he is his own man. His voice is so rich, versatile and caressing it's got to be the voice of a generation. I was fortunate enough to see him live. Got to speak with him briefly and I think he was actually surprised someone knew all his material. His star will "Shine So Bright" (a satirical song he wrote) for a long, long time. Do yourself a favor, get this album.
